- YOUTH SPORTS - Girls Lacrosse Camp | 1st-8th Grade EGR Rowing (Crew) Camp | Age: 12-18 This will be a fun and educational 3-day camp led by EGR This course provides an opportunity to learn the basics of High School coaching staff and varsity players. Emphasis the sport of rowing (Crew). Throughout the week you will will be on individual skill development with a maximum 4 to learn the basic rowing stroke on an indoor rowing machine 1 player to coach ratio. Our goal is to teach skills, increase (erg), learn the parts of a boat or shell, tour the boat house, players’ lacrosse I.Q.’s and inspire a love of the game. then put these rowing skills into practice by going out on the lake in either an 8-person or 4-person shell. - YOUTH SPORTS - TRACK Photo by Austris Augusts/Unsplash.com Michigan’s Fastest Track Camp Age: 8-14 Michigan’s Fastest Track Camp aims to encourage our youth to pursue active and healthy lifestyles by introducing them to the world of track and field, giving them a general knowledge of proper running form, and guiding technique in 4 different field events. The kids will be involved in different workouts, stretching, drills and games to help improve their strength, coordination, endurance, and flexibility as they learn about some of the most common track and field events. Even though track and field will be the main focus of this camp, it is not exclusively for athletes. This camp is for kids of all skill levels as we will be playing games and learning about healthy living and eating. - YOUTH SPORTS - Mighty Kicks Youth Soccer Summer Ages 5 + Camp | Age: 3-12 The objectives of our summer camp are designed to build motor skills, life skills, self-confidence and basic soccer techniques. Our proven methods and age-appropriate curriculum enhances each child’s learning experience while leaving a lasting impression. Our enthusiastic and experienced instructors teach basic soccer skills by using age-appropriate games, drills, and exercises. The sessions are healthy, educational and FUN! The team atmosphere builds socialization and life skills at an important developmental age. Our programs introduce the positive character strengths that are proven to have a direct impact on achievement and success in sports, school and life. Interscholastic League Sports • Participants must be enrolled as an EGRMS student and are required to carry a 2.0 GPA per marking period. • A current athletic physical must be on file with EGRMS dated on or after April 15 of the current school year. • Transportation is not provided. Parents will need to car pool to away competitions. • All registration takes place at the Parks & Recreation Department. You may register in person, over the phone or online with a user name and password provided by the Recreation Department. • We are part of the West Michigan Middle School Conference. Interscholastic Coed Cross Country Interscholastic Girls Volleyball 6th-8th Grade 7th & 8th Grade Competition will come from middle schools in the Interscholastic Teams will have a 10-12 match schedule and surrounding area. There will be separate boys and girls play against schools in the surrounding area. - MIDDLE SCHOOL LEAGUE SPORTS - Middle School Coed Fall Soccer League | 6th-8th Grade This competitive league is open to boys and girls currently in the 6th-8th grade. EGR participants will play on coed teams. Competition will come from other middle schools in the surrounding area. Participants will have 2-3 practices a week, determined by coaches, at the Manhattan Recreation Area. Games will be played during the week and on Saturdays. The number of participants signed up will determine the format if we’re able to have a separate 6th grade team and a separate 7th/8th grade combined team. Transportation is not provided to games. Concussion Awareness Forms State Law; Public Acts 342 and 343 In June of 2013, the State of Michigan instituted a new law whereby all participants under the age of 18 must have a signed Concussion Awareness Form. This form must be filed with our department and once received it is kept on file for the duration of participation or until age 18 for each family member. Forms can be found at our city website (www.eastgr.org) and can easily be submitted electronically to our office. We also have blank forms at the Recreation Department front counter for your convenience. - SAILING - Grand Rapids Junior Sailing Association’s (GRJSA) Sailing School offers classes for Beginners through Advanced. Boats sailed: Opti, Butterfly, Club 420 and adults may use Laser. https://sailgrandrapids.com/or https://www.facebook.comgrjsa/. All classes held at Grand Rapids Yacht Club, 740 Lakeside Dr., SE. Parents and siblings are encouraged to observe from the patio. If the minimum number of registrants is not met, classes could be combined or cancelled. - YOUTH ENRICHMENT - Fencing | Age: 7-15 Learn the weapon wielding skills of Knights, Pirates and Jedi seen on the silver screen! Modern art of fencing teaches strategy, finesse, skill, and endurance. Known as “Physical Chess,” fencing teaches children and teens life skills such as confidence, focus, and respect along with improving balance, flexibility and mental agility. In the long run, fencing becomes a problem solving and decision-making process. In beginning fencing classes, students learn the fundamental art of fencing, including footwork, blade work and mental strategy with fellow novice fencers with all equipment provided but not shared among participants (very important). Professional coaches, Mikhail and Arkadiy Sarkisov, former Soviet Champions and US Cadets and Junior National team coaches are among the instructors. This class will be combined with other Parks and Recreation Departments. Class will be held at Grand Rapids Area Fencing Academy (GRAFA) located at 1345 Monroe NW, Suite 102, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. It will be determined closer to the start of each session whether classes will be held indoors at GRAFA. It will be contingent upon the current Executive Order in place. If classes are not indoors, it will be combination of outdoor and Zoom classes. During your session, GRAFA will provide equipment. A full set of equipment will be issued to the student for their use throughout the class. The equipment will go home after each class for the session. The students practice martial arts moves to help them get out of dangerous situations. We show them how to walk away from a fight and when necessary, defend themselves.
