www.dalgetybayandhillend.org NEWSLETTER MARCH 2021 FUNDING SECURED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL SITE Following the decision to relocate Inverkeithing High School, significant funding has been secured to develop the site. Cllr David Barratt had been in discussions to secure a financial commitment of £1 million to provide additional facilities for the area, backing up the existing political commitment. “I asked for £1 million to be allocated in the Capital Plan and am delighted that £1 million is what will be in the administration’s plans,” he says. “In the longer term, I see this being a multi-million pound investment and, once plans are sufficiently advanced, I expect further funding to be committed.” The existing site of the school, on Hillend Road, will be vacated in five years. A replacement, expected to cost £70 million and accommodate 2,000 pupils, will be built at the Fleet Grounds in Rosyth. Discussions within the community on how the site will be developed are expected, with Cllr Barratt believing it has the capacity to transform the area. “We should be aiming high to deliver a community and sports hub serving South and West Fife, not just preserving community use in Inverkeithing, but expanding what is on offer,” he adds. 1

HILLEND CAMERA CLUB In January, the club’s first online module was repeated to allow members who joined later in 2020 to experience the various challenges it presented. It was a Still Life module spread over four weeks starting with producing a main image while trying different lighting techniques and subjects. The next part was to photograph different surfaces or textures that would be used in the following week as a background for the main image. This final part involved processing the two images and merging them to create a single and hopefully artistic result. Some examples are shown here. In February, the challenge is to take a range of photographs with a fixed focal length lens or without using the zoom. That may not be as easy as it sounds. Plans are under way to introduce a new module in March relating to famous pieces of art that will form the basis of an artistic photograph. There will also be an internal competition on the same subject. This year the club has entered 34 prints of members’ photographs in the Scottish Photographic Federation competition that will be judged in March. The results of that will be reported in a later issue of the Diary. Hillend Camera Club is the official Photographic Association for the Dalgety Bay and Inverkeithing area and now has a membership of 29. Membership costs £25 ‘til Sept 2021. Joining details can be found on the club’s new website at www.hillendcc.org and on the club’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/hillendcc. At a recent meeting the committee agreed to allow people to join in the club’s Facebook page for three weeks before joining officially. The club is open to anyone from beginner to expert and offers free membership to 12-16 year olds accompanied by an adult member. On the website some examples of members’ photographs are available to view and in the members’ section are the popular online programme and video library. The club also has a Flickr group that is restricted to members where images are shared and discussed. As well as the online resources the club is collecting old cameras etc. that can be loaned out to members along with manuals for GIMP and Photoshop (cs6) graphics editors. The club will be organising outdoor events as soon as any relaxation of the current restrictions allow. Are you suffering from fear of the dentist? There is help! There are many reasons why a person might develop dental anxiety, but the fear of the dentist often stems from bad experiences, especially in childhood. Sometimes we pick this up this from nervous parents or from horror stories told to us by others. Over time, this can lead to you not going to the dentist. You become embarrassed about the appearance of your teeth, about your breath and oral hygiene and often about not being able to cope. As time passes, this becomes a vicious circle that makes it harder to attend the dentist. We know that a healthy smile plays a significant role in any person’s mental wellbeing, so what can we do to help? First of all, we do not judge, and we understand the nature of dental anxiety. It cannot be reasoned away, and it is not a sign of weakness or failure to control one’s emotions! A good start for any nervous patient is to attend the practice for a look around and an honest chat about their personal situation. After that, short and regular attendances for a dental health check or hygiene can build confidence for dental treatment appointments. The patient will be able to always stop treatment and will get educated in all their treatment options and be actively involved in every decision about their teeth. Non-threatening language is used, and the patient can feel once again in control. The result will be an easier journey to a trusted and empathetic dentist and hopefully you will soon be able to say: “My teeth make me smile!” Stephanie and the team at The Linden Tree Dental Lounge 4

Major retailer B&M has submitted plans to change the former garden centre at Ridge Way to a home store with garden centre, creating over 40 jobs. B&M Retail says it is seeking representation within South Fife and specifically Dalgety Bay, where a new store would complement the company’s existing outlets in the area. The garden centre closed in February 2020 with Dobbies deciding to concentrate its retail operation at its Fife Leisure Park store in Dunfermline. The Community Council would support a development which brings jobs to the area but is concerned about the traffic management of the Gateway development as a whole. Councillor David Barratt said: “There is a long-standing concern that the traffic in the area is too busy and dangerous. The new developments, including Costa and the petrol station, will all compound the existing issues.” Cllr. Barratt is to have discussions with Fife Council transportation about the traffic increase and difficulties. 6

AAt the beginning of March, Fairtrade Fortnight will be in full swing – at least, it would have been if everything had been normal and Covid-19 had not turned the world upside down. Virus or no virus, the campaign to have Fairtrade principles recognised as the standard by which the world should operate continues. Fairtrade principles are clear: establish long-term direct trading relationships, pay farmers and producers fair prices for their goods, do not use child or exploited labour, have no workplace discrimination, be a democratic and transparent organisation, ensure safe working conditions and reasonable hours, and invest in community development projects. To that can be added a concern for climate change. Some countries have started to develop a plan that will help trade through tackling climate change and the use of fossil fuels. It is a small start but New Zealand, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Fiji are joining forces to sign a green trade agreement, ACCTS – the Agreement on Climate Change, Trade and Sustainability. It is an ambitious, modern and green trade agreement, shaping trade in favour of greener industries and away from fossil fuels, supporting people AND the planet. ACCTS has three aims: · committing countries to stop subsidising fossil fuels · making it easier and cheaper to sell eco-friendly goods and services that help tackle climate change · leading to a shared system for labelling the goods we buy with their environmental impact. So, this Fairtrade Fortnight we might not be extolling the benefits of Fairtrade through our annual coffee morning or our projects in the primary schools but it does not stop us from lobbying our MP and asking him to raise the matter of green trade in Parliament. From the Brexit negotiations, we know that trade talks can end up satisfying some and not others. Introducing green trade aspects should be able to satisfy everybody. What’s not to like – a fairer, greener world where everyone benefits? If you would like to become a Fairtrade supporter or would like more information about Fairtrade, please contact Winnie Wood, Chair (822516) or Robin Arnott, Secretary (822293). Have a look at our web site (www.fairtrade- dalgetybay.org.uk); check out our local Fairtrade Directory and read about Fairtrade ‘Beyond 2015 and towards 2030’. The DBHS Annual Cheese and Wine Evening did not take place in February, because, you’ve guessed it, Covid-19 restrictions. It is all very sad, but catering for our members at a Cheese and Wine was just not going to happen in the current situation. There was, however, a quiz circulated with the Grapevine, the DBHS monthly newsletter to keep the spirit of the Annual Cheese and Wine going. It is a straightforward quiz with 25 cryptic clues, the answers to which are all trees. The closing date is 5 March 2021 and there is a prize. The March meeting, on Friday 5 March 2021, was to be a presentation about Cacti and Succulents by Robin Arnott, a DBHS member for many years. Robin exhibits at the DBHS Annual Show, as well as other shows, and his knowledge of the subject is vast. Unfortunately, this has been cancelled. Maybe we will catch up with him in March 2022. I do hope we can get back to some kind of normal at some point in 2021. The Committee is thinking about the Annual Show. It is in September but the decision to hold it or not has to be made by the end of February. Sponsors and Advertisers have to be contacted and all agreed and set up by the middle of March, so that a schedule can be printed. We could have a virtual show of some sort, I suppose. Something to consider. The “Jobs for” part of the DBHS report is on the DBHS website at www.dbhs.org. Click on the “Jobs for” button to see what jobs you should be doing at this time of year. Michael Gourlay Chairman DBHS With no beach cleans currently possible, for this year’s Plastic Freebuary we asked people Plastic-Free to pick up at least one piece of plastic every time they went out for a walk in February and send us their videos of the plastic waste they found on our beaches and streets. The aim was to create a video montage at the end of the month. One other thing that we are still able to do during lockdown is give Zoom talks to local community groups about the plastic pollution problem and what we can all do about it. So if you belong to a local group and think this might be of interest to your members, do get in touch and we will be delighted to speak at one of your meetings. The Royal Mail continue to systematically litter the Bay’s streets with large quantities of rubber bands. Wild creatures such as hedgehogs and birds can become entangled in them, and can die either from infected wounds or restricted mobility. Rubber bands dropped on Dalgety Bay the street will eventually wash down the drains and end up in the ocean and on our beaches, where they can cause further harm. We continue to raise this issue with the Royal Mail, whose promises to address the matter have so far come to nothing. In the meantime, if you do see any rubber bands on the street, please pick them up and cut them up if you can – cutting them means that they can’t cause entanglement of birds if they end up in landfill. Many of these symptoms like hot flushes, sweats, anxiety, low mood and more can have a real impact on day -to-day life. There are lots of treatments now available, including hormone replacement therapy which is a safe and effective way to reduce symptoms. There are also some herbal remedies and lifestyle changes which may support menopause management, but it is always best to talk to a healthcare professional before taking supplements.
