Natural Edge Bowl
    Turned by
 Keving Seigworth
This is a maple limb
crotch . Due to splits
and cracks I was not
able to center the
crotch flame figure.
The other swirling
figure is also
interesting.

Incorporating Ceramics - Ron Zdroik
I have recently started to experiment with
different acrylic medium materials. This is one
of my “wood and ceramic” turnings. The
hardest part is trying not to burn the wood
when it is in the kiln.
I have done pottery work in the past and have
used them as a base or pedestal for wood
bowls. Here, I wanted to replicate a ceramic
look directly onto a turned vessel. Basically, it
is a simple cherry vase. I turn the top portion
to a slightly small diameter and then carved
the “ceramic” lower portion using hand tools
and a NSK grinder. Using different acrylic
paints and mediums (crackle paste, acrylic
washes, etc.), I then coat the lower area with
a thick layer of resin, achieving a glazed
ceramic look. I have included a close-up of the
“ceramic” area.

Incorporating Ceramics - Ron Zdroik
This is another “wood and
ceramic” attempt. Again, it
starts as a cherry vase. This
time I wanted a totally different
look and feel. I start with a
thick sandy acrylic medium,
added a lot of paint washes,
and then coated it with a flat
varnish, helping me achieve the
dull, rough ceramic effect I was
looking for.

Box Elder Bowl
           Turned By
           Ron Zdroik
Box elder bowl on ebonized base. This
bowl is about 8.5” in diameter and
about a 9” tall. I know that there was a
large inclusion that was going to break
off, so I decided to use that defect as
part of the design. I didn’t want to use
resin as a fill, so I came up with a
copper “fence” idea. I soldered a
bunch of copper wire together, then
patinated it and the structure was then
carefully positioned into pre-drilled
holes.

Poplar Bowl
  Ron Zdroik
This piece started out as
a rather bland poplar
bowl. I added patinated
copper legs and metal-
reactive patina paints on
the interior. The exterior
and rim are gilder’s paste
waxes, something I have
just started to use.

Oak Bowl
   Ron Zdroik
This bowl is a very old
piece of oak with plenty
of character (spalting,
holes, cracks) on an
ebonized base. Using the
ebonized base elevates
the bowl and allows the
viewer to see more of the
exterior.

Turned Platter
         By
  Christine Novak
I used a piece of the
abundant free ash we
have acquired to turn
the plate and I then
used a commercial
device, for safety, to
create the Lichtenberg
Figures.

Two more submissions by Christine Novak
The snow folks are just some thing I was playing
with. I had a bat blank and made a few couples. I enjoy making baby rattles as gifts! I
This particular couple is a little Russian couple! do not remember which wood I used.

coats of gloss lacquer then
final sanded with 1000 grit

polish like I usually do. This
time I left it with a satin finish.

Ear Rings by Harold Solberg
Two of the pictures are embossed earrings that I needed to make to restock my Artists Gallery display after the holiday sales. They are
end grain hard maple colored with permanent markers then embossed with a machinists knurling die. The rotary die is pressed into the
maple as it rotates in the lathe.
Both faces are sprayed with clear krylon as they are rotated on a lazy susan to get a uniform finish It is difficult to emboss two with
matching designs to make a pair using a hand held die.
Two Bud Vases
     Submitted by
    Harold Solberg
Here is two bud vases turned,
bored and reamed with a
recess turned at the top of
the bore to accept a flush
fitting test tube. The tube is
flush to the top surface so
either a dried or a fresh
flower can be displayed in it.
Water in the test tube
preserves the fresh blooms.

Second submission by Ron Zdroik
A wood vessel in the style of Rebecca DeGroot's legged bowls. The vessel is pine, varnished with wipe-
on satin poly, and patina acrylic paints for the interior area. The legs are walnut. I didn't have any
veneer, so I use 1/16" birch plywood for the splines. Also, since I don't have any power carving tools,
the legs are attached directly to the vessel with a tenon.
