To welcome our new Artists in Residence, we present the Lake House Residents‘ Showcase, ’Place Making’. This official introduction of our artists’ work to the Lake House Community, includes work by; Alice Cuillin, Tania Parrott, Jeannine Friedrich and Catherine Farquhar. Diverse in style and genre, these four artists celebrate the broad spectrum of art inspired by Lake House Arts. Alice Cuillin has a fascination with the natural environment and the place of humans within it. With a background in human, animal and environmental health Alice is well placed to observe natural world interactions from molecular to ecosystem levels. A graduate of the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and with work history in India, West Africa, North America, the Caribbean and now New Zealand, Alice brings the perspective of a global observer to bear on work investigating the relationships between plant and animal life. The strength and complexity of these systems are explored in intricate drawings. Alice’s work prompts the observer to consider the fragility, the durability and the interconnectedness of the natural world. Jeannine Friedrich is an Auckland based contemporary artist from Berlin, Germany. She is best known for her large scale vibrant abstract paintings. A common theme in Jeannine‘s work is colour combined with (wild) mark making. She finds acrylic mediums to be the perfect playground for intense layering to achieve fascinating levels of complexity. With her work the viewer will never get bored, will never be done exploring. A different angle, a different light, flip it upside down and you may come up with an entirely different painting... Tania Parrott has been creative her whole life. She started with hairdressing, which she is very passionate about and gives her a great understanding of colour. Tania has traveled and lived in Vancouver, BC. Initial projects were a line of T-shirts, marbled, tie-dyed and handpainted, which developed into a position as props and display artist with the Vancouver Convention Centre and BC Stadium. Her projects included back drops, props, buffet and room decor for weddings, as well as other projects with Pan Pacific. She returned to NZ when she had children and has since been painting, creating, and running various workshops as a self-taught artist. About 9 years ago Tania started experimenting with clay and continues to explore texture and colour. Her work is about bringing joy, brightening up your day and inspiring the soul. She creates beautiful environments to nurture our being. Catherine was born in the rural town of Methven in the South Island of New Zealand. She has spent most of her life in South Canterbury and now has recently relocated to Auckland. Inspired by the varied landscape, from the majestic rugged mountains of central Otago to the aquatic hues of the South Island coast, she tries to capture the diversity of what the land expresses. Having always loved a pencil in hand, with the natural desire to draw and observe forms and colours she opted to pursue formal study and completed a Diploma in Fine Arts with the focus being on painting. She has exhibited in galleries in Otago and Canterbury. Many of her paintings are in private collections here in NZ and the UK. Catherine studies the dynamic relationship between the human form and how it relates to the environment. Her media is oils, enjoying the mobility, texture and colours that it can deliver. She is excited to be exploring her new city coastal environment and the new developments that it brings to her work.
