Dear friends: Last year Vin Diesel, Sean Astin, Fred Savage, and many more celebrities joined hundreds of others for the first annual Miles for Melanoma at Universal Studios 5K Run/Walk. We are pleased once again to serve as co-chairs of the 2013 Miles for Melanoma event, which promises to be even bigger and better. Melanoma has affected us personally — Hillary has fought the battle three times and her father has also been diagnosed. We know far too well the dangers of this cancer. It is the leading cause of cancer in young adults and increasing in incidence faster than any other cancer in the world. If melanoma is caught early, it is largely curable through simple surgery. Unfortunately, it is often not found until the cancer has spread through the body. In that case, the diagnosis is very, very challenging. By participating in the 2013 Miles for Melanoma at Universal Studios 5K Run/ Walk, you will be helping raise money to support the work of the Melanoma Research Foundation, the largest independent organization working specifically on melanoma. Those funds will support patient education and advocacy efforts, and will enable groundbreaking research. As a sponsor you will join your voice with ours and countless others in helping to raise awareness about this deadly cancer. We know that exposure to UV radiation increases the risk of melanoma, and that blistering sunburns as a child can make you more than twice as likely to have this cancer. Despite this, we see young people — and particularly young women — sporting a tan as though it is a sign of health. Even more distressing, tanning salons across the country are luring young people into the dangers of artificial tanning by making false health claims. Through the Miles for Melanoma program and this event at Universal Studios, we can spread a different message, and in doing so, can help save the health (and possibly the lives!) of thousands of people. We hope you will join us in supporting this event.
