The essence of the gardens is one of romance, fairy tale like charm and quaint English style elegance. With each season there are new wonders and floral delights to explore. A large section of the grounds have been extensively and beautifully developed over many years, with water features, a gardened ruin and the Willow House overlooking the duck pond. Having enjoyed a delicious morning tea and the gardens we head in to Bermagui for lunch (own expense). Bermagui hugs the edges of a spectacular harbour and nestles under the shadow of Dromedary Mountain, the small vibrant town is famous for its deep sea and game fishing, including yellow fin tuna and marlin. Following some free tme we visit the Montreal Goldfield. In September 1880, gold was discovered on a beach north of Bermagui. Named Montreal Goldfield, the rush barely lasted from 1880–1883 but nearly 250kg of gold was unearthed using only a pick and shovel. It became the only goldfield in Australia that extends into the sea. This goldfield was also the start of the great unsolved Bermagui Mystery – the disappearance of a government surveyor and four other men.
