Many of these screens, which are sometimes referred to as “retina displays”, are capable of displaying content and graphics at a level approaching print quality, and to make sure that this content actually looks good on these screens, you need to supply it at 2x quality. With 2x quality, the pixel density of the content is doubled from traditional resolutions, causing it to look sharper and richer on a high-resolution display. A 2x quality advert has double the resolution in both width and height and four times the pixels in total, but the physical size of the asset doesn’t change. For example, a conventional billboard advert with a resolution of 1000 by 200 pixels becomes a 2000 by 400 pixel advert to achieve 2x quality. It will still fit the same physical space on a website or in an email newsletter, even though the resolution has increased significantly. QUALITY? WHAT IS BLEED? Bleed is something that you have to consider when designing content for a printed magazine. When content is printed at a printing press, there is a small degree of movement as the paper is moved through the press and ink is applied. Bleed refers to the area on the page beyond the trimmed edge of the page where the ink is applied. You should always create 3mm of bleed on all edges of your content. Supplying content without bleed may result in visible white lines around the content when it is trimmed at the press. HOW TO APPLY BLEED The concept of applying bleed is the same for all desktop publishing programmes such as Adobe Illustrator.
