Hosted in Russia for the first me, Special Olympics World Games are the flagship spor ng event designed to create a truly inclusive world for people with intellectual disabili es. Held every two years, alterna ng with summer and winter, Special Olympics World Games are the world's largest sports and humanitarian event. In addi on to sports, the Games are an opportunity raise awareness about the need for inclusion for people with intellectual disabili es in healthcare, educa on, workplaces, and communi es. The World Winter Games in Kazan will help create new opportuni es for the es mated three million people with intellectual disabili es living in Russia. HISTORY OF THE GAMES Special Olympics was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a pioneer Dr. Timothy SHRIVER for inclusion of people with has been the Chairman intellectual disabilities. of the Special Olympics The first Special Olympics World International Board of Directors Games were held in Chicago, Illinois, since 1996. USA in 1968 with 1,000 athletes. Today, six million athletes compete in Special Olympics events in over 190 countries and territories. Every athlete competing in the Games has trained hard to achieve their personal best and reach their full potential. During the Opening Ceremony, athletes recite the Athlete Oath: "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." The spirit of the oath infuses every event at the Games. HOSTS RUSSIA Russia is home to 146 million people making it the world's ninth largest state in terms of population. Russia traditionally pays a great deal of attention to sport. The Government of the Russian Federation is convinced that holding major international sports events in Russia provides an excellent opportunity to welcome guests from all over the world, take part in a celebration of sports and youth, and create a socially significant legacy. TATARSTAN The Republic of Tatarstan is one of the most economically developed regions of the Russian Federation. It is located in the central part of the country. It is home to people of more than 170 nationalities and is one of the most attractive regions for tourists. Three of Russia's 27 UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located in Tatarstan. They are the Kazan Kremlin, thetown-island of Sviyazhsk, and the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex. KAZAN Kazan is the Sports Capital of Russia, one of the country's largest economic, scientific, and cultural centers as well as the host city of the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2022. Kazan has hosted several major events, including the Universiade in 2013, the FINA World Championships in 2015, FIFATM World Cup matches in 2018, and the WorldSkills Competition in 2019.
DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS RUSSIA Olga SLUTSKER Special Olympics Russia was has been the established over 20 years ago and is one of the largest President of Special programs in the global Special Olympics Russia since 2019 Olympics movement. Currently, Special Olympics Russia operates 63 regional offices in all federal districts. Activities in Tatarstan began in 2017. Special Olympics Russia offers sports, health, education, and leadership programming to 130,000 people with intellectual disabilities. In Tatarstan, more than 2,000 athletes participate in 17 sports.
