UPTOWN GROCERY COMING TO THE VILLAGE Residents passing the vacant Jackie Cooper property at Berkshire and May have probably long wondered why in the world nothing was happening to redevelop this site. The property has been vacant about a decade and, despite appearances, there have been many attempts to snag a development that would rejuvenate this area and provide much‐needed sales taxes for The Village. The search is finally over and The Village is getting the best development we could have hoped for. The Village Development Authority, an Urban Renewal Authority created specifically for the purpose of facilitating the redevelopment of certain areas of The Village, recently entered into a Development Agreement with Esperanza Real Estate Investments, LLC to bring an upscale grocery store to The Village. The developer will receive development finance assistance from the City, which will be funded thorough a Sales Tax, Tax Increment District. In other words, finance assistance will be paid for with sales taxes generated by the store. Uptown Grocery is part of the Buy for Less Grocery Store chain and is a new type of store that offers not only a wide selection of organic foods but also your normal grocery store products. The only other Uptown Grocery is located on Covell in Edmond. The Village will be the second location for this brand and the new store will offer some new services and features that the store in Edmond does not. Uptown Grocery is expected to be open for business in the spring of 2015. CITY OF THE VILAGE, OK Chris Bernardy, Mayor - Jerry Broughton, Vice-Mayor C. Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Run to Remember in the OKC Memorial Marathon on April 27, 2014! Voted one of the 12 ‘must‐run’ marathons in the world by Runner’s World magazine, the 26.2 miles of the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon are packed with cheering supporters and the most beautiful neighborhoods in Oklahoma City. Compete against some of the top runners in the region, and join more than 25,000 participants on the starting line running to remember the 168 people who were killed in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing in 1995. This race serves as a testimony that good can overcome evil. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is a Boston qualifying USATF sanctioned race, but it is also a fundraising event to support the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. The Memorial’s future depends on our runners’ fundraising efforts. Today, Oklahoma City stands as a symbol of hope and resilience. Recovery after the bombing was a marathon in its own right, and our runners and donors are the driving force in making sure this story is told forever. Last year, race officials asked that two lanes of Britton Road be closed to make it safer for the growing number of paricipants in the event. Although this is an inconvenience for motorists in the area, the event is for a good cause and the lanes are only closed for a few hours on Sunday morning when most businesses are closed. Two lanes will be closed again this year, so please keep that in mind if you have to be on Britton Road between the hours 7:00 am and 10:00 am. There will only be westbound traffic between May and Penn during this time. Chris Bernardy, Mayor - Jerry Broughton, Vice-Mayor C. CITY UNVEILS NEW MOBILE APP The City recently launched a new mobile app for use by residents of The Village while on the go. The mobile phone app is currently available for iPhones and Android phones and can be downloaded for free at your mobile app store. When visiting your mobile app store, search for “City of The Village” and download the app just like you would any other app for your phone or iPad. The app provides a link to the online “Shop The Village” program that the city put in place several years ago. In addition, the app provides a link to the City’s Facebook Page and connects to several City webpages such as ePay eBill, Council Agendas, eNews, Recycling Calendars, Holiday Service Schedules, Scheduled Events, and more. Like any new application, there are bound to be a few glitches. Please let us know what other features you would like on the app and please report problems by email at city_hall@thevillageok.org. t CAVEAT EMPTOR All storm shelters are not created equal. Neither are companies that install them. Since the monster tornado that hit Moore last year, there have been a great many permits issued for storm shelters in The Village. If you are considering the purchase of a shelter, do your homework. Make sure the shelter is certified. Texas Tech University has a list of shelters that they have tested and approved. Check customer references to make sure other customers have been satisfied with the work. Also, never pay for work in advance. If a company insists on advance payment, you should be worried.
