From the President
Hello to everyone, hoping to find you all well, we are half
way through the year and hoping things can only get better.
Unfortunately we lost one of our long time members Joyce
Unger recently, Joyce was a lovely person with a very kind heart,
and was a very passionate member of the bird club, she will be
sadly missed. All members wish Karen and her family heartfelt
condolences.

We have just held our Bird Expo on the 8th of May, with many
sellers and buyers attending, with good sales of birds, the day
went off without any hick ups. I would like to thank all the
people who put in a big effort to help set up, work in their
various roles in running the sale and the clean up after the sale,
A really great job, Well Done!
Hoping to see everyone at Jeff and Meghans meeting in July.
Cheers Greg.

Welcome
The Wimmera Bird Club warmly welcomes new members.

Our Bird Expo May 8th 2021
Wimmera Bird Club held their annual bird expo at Stawell S.E.S.
hall on Saturday 8th May 2021. Sellers and buyers came from
across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales with
plenty of birds for sale along with bird carry boxes and plenty of
seed and other accessories. Plenty of birds found new homes and
seed and nuts were very popular also.
According to club President Greg Hemley the sale went
according to plan and was a great success. The response from
sellers was most pleasing and many indicated their willingness
to return next year. Trade tables were well represented again
from local businesses and food was also available in the large
seated area near the front hall.
President Greg paid tribute to those who worked tirelessly in
setting up on the day prior and also to those who helped on the
day to ensure everything went smoothly. A huge thank you to
Greg and Bron for the huge amount of work that they do behind
the scenes to ensure nothing was missed.
We were indeed fortunate to even have an expo this year after an
extremely difficult 2020 and several expos being cancelled after
another outbreak hits Victoria again.

From the editor…
I have spent the last couple of weeks involved with the anti -
duck shooting people. Let’s say that thankfully it is slowly
dying out and hopefully the seasons will come to an end,
especially for Laurie Levy who turns 80 this year and has
been trying to end duck shooting for many, many years.
Whether you are a duck shooter or not it is important to see
shooting ducks as an activity that causes suffering to our
feathered friends. I have personally seen cruelty to these little
birds, I have seen species shot that were not on the ‘legal’ list
at Little Lake Buloke, and I have personally waded across
Lake Toolondo to retrieve an injured duck that ultimately
needed to be euthanized. Very distressing to me because a
human shot it and didn’t do a good enough job, now another
human (me) had to finish the job to a frightened and injured
little bird. Personally I think it ok if a person wants to eat
ducks, there are specialist producers who will supply ducks
but to have now seen what these little birds have to endure
has caused me to rethink what is acceptable.
I think whether it is our aviary birds we love or the wild ones,
they can all give us pleasure and enjoyment and they are all
something to be admired because all birds are such
interesting and unassuming creatures that are happiest just
being birds. Enjoy your birds,

Stacy
GOT MICE OR RATS
I thought this was interesting, another way to get rid of mice and
rats.
This information came from a camping site.
So here it is: chop up a sweet potato and throw or put it around.
Sweet potato forms cyanide in their stomach and they love it, the
sweet potato, not the cyanide.
As the person could not buy any bait, they googled this idea
with the sweet potato throwing it all around. Result: 6 dead rats
and heaps of dead mice.
Give it a go cheap and safe.
Karen.
Bird Rings
Just to let members know our club does have bird rings to
purchase.
If you require any contact Karen on 0448891175 and I will bring

meetings.
