All newsletters are on our website: www.isbearn.com Nº21 th Thursday 11 March 2021 MARIA'S NOTES : Our assembly this week introduced Camille (Miss Jette's daughter), who is currently volunteering as a headmistress at a school in The Democratic Republic of Congo. She gave us a tour of her school and explained that they are trying to complete some projects at the school, and wondered if ISB could help. The children, like the teachers, seem to be very keen to help and we already have lots of fundraising ideas that we are going to put into motion in the coming weeks. Already on Wednesday, the cookery club sold the cakes, that they had made during the club, to the teachers and raised an impressive 40 euros! It's a great start to this new fundraising campaign! As part of our drive to get our uniform looking perfect, there were a few children spotted by our new, top- secret uniform camera, that's programmed to spot great uniforms! Photographs of the children were shown during the assembly and awarded house points! We are pleased to announce the launch of our parent access to FireFly. Logging into FireFly will allow you to see homework and other tasks that have been set for your children and the view their grades and teacher feedback. To log into FireFly, go to isbearn.fireflycloud.net and log in with your personal email address that you have registered with the School. The first time you login, you will see a green box asking you to ‘click here’ if this is your first login. You will then be asked to set a password. I will be sending out an email with more detailed information about logging in to FireFly and what it allows you to see, but ……….. it’s very simple!! So please try it out! Grade 1 has been working in the sensory garden They have been working very hard in the sensory garden. Last week they cleared all the weeds, sticks and leaves and planted lots of new plants. This week Gavin, Miss Sharon’s husband, came to school to build us a teepee from bamboo. We are going to plant some beans and make a shaded area for the summertime. He also built us a structure that next week we are going to transform into a bug hotel. The children were very interested in helping him and using the garden tools! In Maths, Grade 1 have been consolidating their knowledge of number pairs for numbers to 10. We played lots of addition games in maths. International School of Béarn’s News N°21 2020-2021 Page 2

On Monday, 8 March, we celebrated International Women’s Day at school, admiring powerful women and their achievements as well as raising awareness. While we unite on International Women’s Day to celebrate, we also acknowledge that true gender equality does not yet exist anywhere in the world. One in three women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetimes. Women are still paid less than men for the same work, and they do 2.6 times more unpaid care and domestic work. In many countries, women do not have equal access to land, credit or economic and educational opportunities, so when disaster strikes, it’s usually women who often suffer the most. This year’s hashtag: #ChooseToChallenge We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let's all choose to challenge! Following an introduction to the importance of Women’s day on Monday, we plan to spend the rest of Women’s Month breaking the taboo on periods and raising money for women in poverty who do not have access to sanitary products. Join us on International Women’s month as we rally for equality and gender parity, because in 2021, no women should have to apologize for her gender. Aurélia and Annabelle - Grade 13 What about the young children??? Early Years enjoy being outside whatever the weather. It’s fun mixing colours in the rain puddles! Early Years have been working all together on the class dinosaur.
