A MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Rytas Petraitis: Hello Viking Village, My name is Rytas Petraitis '10, and I am the new interim Athletic Director at Villa Angela-Saint Joseph High School. As an alumnus, I am extremely excited to be here to continue the improvements and changes of VASJ. We must hold VASJ's values close to our hearts while striving for excellence, upholding traditions and implementing innovations. I am eager to work directly with all the coaches, parents and students to create wonderful experiences and programs that will benefit all. I'd like to share some details about my own professional experience. Prior to accepting this position, I had the opportunity to work with two Fortune 500 companies. My focus was on financials and process optimization. I cannot wait to use my skills to better this school and athletic programs, but I’m mostly looking forward to a more family-oriented work environment. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly. I look forward to getting to know all of you! Go Vikings! ____________________________________________________________________________

Our theme for Lent this year is Lent is More. It is a play on the phrase "Less is more,” which is a reminder that there is a gift in our sacrifices throughout Lent. It is in giving that we receive. It is in giving that we are able to contribute to the greater good. Although it may seem like we have to survive on less, we will ultimately have more — more personal peace of mind, more time for prayer, more hope, faith, love, etc. ... and, in turn, it is likely that others will have the same. AND it also keeps us mindful
that there is more to Lent than what we may initially think! We will embrace this theme throughout the entirety of Lent. Lenten Mission Collection (LMC) We are off to a great start! This was the last week for SOUP CAN collections for the Euclid Hunger Center. Next week we will continue with CHILDRENS’ BOOKS collections, either new or gently used, to give to local children in need to support childhood literacy. If students are making a donation as part of their service requirements (juniors and seniors), they should bring their donation in a clearly labeled bag with their name and 5-10 items per bag for that collection. IN PERSON students, bring donations to the LOFT. VIRTUAL students, bring donations to the MAIN OFFICE. PENNIES FOR PATIENTS LMC COLLECTION Throughout all of Lent, from February 17-March 31, students are invited to donate to their “Class” page to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while competing against the other grade levels to see which graduating class can raise the most money! For every $10 students raise/donate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, they earn 1 hour of service! (Donate $20, earn 2 hours… Donate $50, earn 5 hours!) If students ask friends or family to donate on their behalf, be sure that the student’s name is connected with the donation in some way or email bwilson@vasj.com to confirm that a specific donation has been made from a friend/family member so that they can get service credit.
Here are the CLASS PAGES to donate. On that class page, click on the “Join Your Classroom” red button on the right side and follow the instructions from there. It is first come, first served through Eventbrite RSVP. Masks are required. Students can RSVP here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/service-thursday-tickets-142157507933
Lenten Prayer Opportunities for Students Students are invited to join in prayer this Lent in ways the may or may not have experienced in the past. No RSVPs are necessary for these events. Stations of the Cross takes place every Monday from 3:15-3:30 p.m. in the Founders Chapel. “Lunch and Learn a Prayer” takes place every Tuesday during lunch in the LOFT. Reconciliation will also be offered during Lent. Prayer Intentions Is there someone or something in your life that is in need of prayer? Do you know a member of our community who needs prayer? Are there circumstances that are seemingly out of your control that you need to offer up to God's care? We, as a VASJ family, want to pray with you for your intention. VASJ SENIORS PLAN BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION: Walking through the halls of VASJ during the month of February, you would’ve spotted buttons pinned to students’ shirts and posters on the walls that paid tribute to Black History Month. VIKING REFLECTIONS: Ohio National Guard member John Henry Posey ’16 It has always amazed me how we, as human beings, often seek to make our lives easier while at the same time enabling ourselves to do the work of God. I have come to realize that we live in a world where our cell phones are engineered to be smarter than the people that use them, and our political leaders have abandoned their duties to the people and cast aspersions on one another. When I saw angry mobs storming into our halls of policy and democracy, I felt that we were living in fear of those who share different political opinions and become unable to discern between radicals and docile followers. Times of divisiveness plague our society, and the feeling of animosity toward our fellow humans seems to be perpetuated by the very news outlets that are supposed to give us proper information about our world.
