I tried to recall who was driving 1916 T-Fords around this period, and I sort of narrowed it down to three. It was not Frank Dallimore’s as his had a brass horn Natter Night Meeting Minutes 29 mounted to the windscreen. I then thought, it is now down to two, Bruce Lyon and Graeme Chard. I don’t ever recall seeing the hood down on Bruce Lyon’s, so I deducted it must/could be Graeme Chard’s. John Harold Haynes OBE... The international motoring fraternity mourns the passing of John Harold Haynes on February 8, 2019. John was an entrepreneur and creator of the Haynes Manual and founder of the Haynes Publishing Group and the Haynes International Motor Museum in Somerset U.K. – a superb collection of over 400 vehicles and exhibits. Like many of today’s ‘old car hobbyists’, John began tinkering as a teenager – his project being an Austin 7 which he converted into a sporty ‘special’ and sold at a profit. President’s Message By Paul Daley Eastlink Great Australian Rally... Cruden Farm, Langwarrin, was the venue for the inaugural Eastlink Great Australian Rally on Sunday, January 20. I checked in at the Eastlink Operations Centre at Ringwood at around 8:30am, and there was already approximately 300 cars waiting for the flag- off. It was a real ‘festive’ feel, with a complimentary sausage sizzle and a gathering of a complete cross- section of the movement. The cars were flagged off at 9:00am, and the trip down to Langwarrin was uneventful – a passing parade of veteran, vintage and classic vehicles all travelling at their own pace. The road chosen to enter Cruden Farm had issues coping with the arrival of so many display cars, and organisers will no doubt fine tune this for next year. The historic gardens of Cruden Farm were picture perfect and just ideal for this event – manicured gardens, shady trees, and an ambiance to showcase the cars. I caught up with Chris and Fiona Dillon displaying their 1909 Alan How, Alastair Berg and Ian Berg Minerva, and Paul Goethel had the 1908 Swift on display. Geof and Jo Baulch of the Model T Ford Club had their Henry Ford Quadricycle on display with its motor ticking over. Geof has agreed to display this vehicle at one of our Club events in the future. Many of our members were seen strolling the grounds with family and friends – I caught up with Ian Berg and Alastair Berg who were chatting with Alan How of Creative Custom Cars of Dromana. Alan is renowned for his quality work and has assisted Ian with his cars a number of times. The event was an outstanding success and our Club will promote it further next year and encourage members to support it. How To Machine Square Material In A Three Jaw Chuck By Brian Hussey Many of the early Body Builders, as a carry-over from their horse drawn carriage days, had a penchant for Square Nuts. Most of us with a lathe will know what a nuisance it is to change from the trusty three jaw chuck which we use for almost everything, to a four jaw (usually accompanied by a dial indicator) to machine square material. The following photos which are self explanatory may prove useful and certainly time saving. 10

Healesville and across the Black Spur by Ian Berg In 1904 an illustrated Companion Guide to Healesville, Blacks’ Spur, Narbethong and Marysville was produced by prominent photographers and good friends John William Lindt and Nicholas Claire. This was in response to the increasing interest in the area by visitors and holiday makers. Lindt and Claire had a great appreciation for the enchanting beauty of the area and the guide pictured and described its unspoilt scenery and local attractions, and was designed to further encourage more visitors to the area. The area was, and still is, a very accessible tourist destination being only 50 miles from Melbourne. It offered plenty of choice for scenic outings to a number of local destinations, such as Marysville and Narbethong both of which had a number of hotels and guest houses at this time. The same buses in front of the Hermitage (State Library Victoria) Tourists would arrive by train at Healesville Station, and then be collected by horse drawn coach or buggy. A motor bus service was then introduced and pictures of the original buses servicing Healesville and the Black Spur survive. These buses also transported passengers over the Black Spur to various accommodation destinations, one being The Hermitage, a popular guest house at Narbethong. The Hermitage was built for John Lindt in 1884, and Lindt was to gain wide acclaim for society, landscape and cityscape photography. He travelled extensively abroad and locally, and much of his work focussed on the picturesque areas of forests between Healesville and Marysville. The Hermitage itself is set in landscaped gardens on a steeply Another bus of the same make. Part of the experience for guests would include lectures from Lindt, accompanied by lantern slide presentations of some of his expeditions. Regular guests included soprano Dame Nellie Melba and botanist Baron Ferdinand von Mueller (who is reputed to have designed some of the Hermitage garden). Lindt lived at the Hermitage until his death in 1926. The Hermitage was then to become a private residence, but is now again a guest house. It is historically significant as a result of not only the architecture, but also the gardens which include rare and exotic plant species. Lindt was prolific and many of his photographs include the Hermitage and the area more generally. To The Unsung Heroes By Greg Smith I penned this article way back in 2003, but it never got printed in Brass Notes - not sure if I failed to type it up and send it in, or it just didn’t get included. It is however, a topic that is still very valid to this day. Unfortunately some of the great unsung heroes have passed away, and our club is the poorer for this. It is also valid in that this year, we are running the High Wheeler rally back in Maryborough, and much of the article is about being a “tail end Charlie” on the buggy rally of 2003. Whether it be 2003 or 2019, our club is indebted to the unsung heroes. Even as a relative novice, (compared to others in attending major tours), I now feel “semi qualified” to comment, having participated in every major tour since the Swift has been on the road, either in it, or also a couple of times in the Schacht, when Denise allows! As well, being involved in directing two major tours, the 1&2 Cylinder tour in Maryborough last year, and the recent High Wheeler tour also in Maryborough, I wanted to pay some sort of homage to the “unsung heroes” as I call them. I now know the immense work and follow up required in the position of directing a tour, and I have been fortunate enough to witness first hand some of these deeds by great tour directors. Eg. Forryans + Co. at Sale, Lyons at Ocean Grove, Alcocks + Savorys + Jarrotts at Healesville, Edwards at Wonthaggi, Emmersons at Warrigul, Forryans and Co. at Hamilton, Alcocks + Gomm at Healesville, Chennals + Co. at Mt Gambier, McDougalls at Shepparton. All these tour directors deserve hearty congratulations on first rate tours. These tour directors would, I believe, all concur, it takes A tour director’s role can include many tasks!! help in making first rate tours.
