Party for the Planet in 2020 Rob Vernon Senior VP for Communications & Marketing Association of Zoos and Aquariums RVernon@aza.org www.AZA.org 7
Party for The Planet • For more than 20 years AZA members have come together to collectively celebrate Earth Day and beyond with “Party for the Planet” • After declining participation the campaign was refreshed and refocused for 2019 as “Party for the Planet: Spring into Action”
2019 Springing into Action! • Party for the Planet: Spring into Action is a coordinated campaign from Earth Day to World Oceans Day that leverages the reach and resources of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to provide inclusive family volunteer opportunities that improve our planet.
2019 Impact • Over 120 AZA- accredited facilities registered family-friendly volunteer events from Earth Day to World Oceans Day • 50 facilities received grants • 6 “Signature Cities" participated in larger scale events and activities
2019 Impact More than 140 events resulted in: • 6,500 volunteers dedicating 16,000+ hours • 115 miles of coastline • 40,000+ native and pollinator-friendly seeds, plants, and trees planted • Nearly 350 acres of native habitat and pollinator gardens established
Party for the Planet 2020 AZA members will again “Spring into Action” from Earth Day to World Oceans Day with: • Inclusive, family-friendly volunteer events • Opportunities for collective action • Toolkits & resources from AZA and partner organizations to support events • Grant opportunity & video contest
2020 Theme & Focus This year’s campaign will focus on expanding, improving, and protecting healthy habitats. Inclusive, family-friendly volunteer opportunities will remain a pillar of the program and should include actions that align with this goal including: • planting native and pollinator-friendly gardens; • cleaning up and reducing plastic pollution in waterways and coastlines; • removing invasive species that may be threatening habitats and the survival of native species.
2020 Theme & Focus In addition to volunteer opportunities, AZA members plan to support visitors and their community in taking collective action to save species. These could include: • facilitating visitors contacting businesses to encourage them to adopt more sustainable practices or thanking those that have. • facilitating visitors contacting government officials in support of legislation that protects healthy habitats at the local, state, or federal level. • working with their community to identify a larger scale opportunity for action that would benefit species by protecting native habitats.
Toolkits Kits will also be refreshed this year to include helpful handouts and giveaways that support families continuing to take action to save species. All AZA members requesting activity kits will be required to submit a report about the reach and impact of their events.
Video Contest • AZA members will again have the opportunity to submit a 60 second video sharing the story and impact of their efforts to expand, improve, and protect healthy habitats. • Entries will be narrowed to a top ten and shared for public voting extending the opportunity to engage the public. • The winning organizations will get to designate the recipient of a conservation donation in their name.
