IKEA bathroom taps are fitted with an aerator that mixes in air, so you use less water yet have the same pressure. Space and belonging What makes a home? Boris Bertram’s new documentary, Boris Benjamin Bertram is an award-winning documentary maker, interested in conflict resolution The Human Shelter, explores a universal and humanitarianism. His latest project, The Human question that speaks to the heart Shelter: An Expedition Into What Makes A Home, is currently touring the international film circuit and screening at an exhibition of the same name at the IKEA Museum, Älmhult, until 3 May 2019. It offers a glimpse into the many ways people create homes for themselves, often in challenging circumstances and environments. ‘During my career, I’ve filmed people fleeing from war and natural disasters in Iraq, Kurdistan and the Central African Republic. People on the move and without homes,’ he says. ‘Shelter is the first concept we have of a home. A place where we, as human beings, are supposed to feel safe. It was through these journeys that the idea for making a film investigating how we create home came up. ‘I’ve met people living on literally nothing, but who insist on living poetically in a world that’s constantly changing. That’s inspiring,’ he says. THE HUMAN SHELTER WAS FUNDED BY IKEA @BORIS.BERTRAM Told in seven ‘chapters’, the film weaves its way in and out of different dwellings around the world, as contributors reflect on home and belonging. It also draws on the ideas of time, our natural surroundings and the vulnerability of human existence. What makes a home? The question lingers long after the credits end. AN EXPEDITION ACROSS FOUR CONTINENTS The Human Shelter opens with the snowbound environment of Sámi reindeer herders in Norway, and ends with a remote cabin in Iceland. In between, we visit New York, a refugee camp in Iraq, NASA’s Mars habitat in Hawaii, a tree house in Uganda, tiny living quarters in Tokyo and a lagoon shanty town in Lagos, Nigeria. Natural wonders The new limited edition TÄNKVÄRD collection is a celebration of craftsmanship and natural materials. Akanksha Deo, designer of the textiles, explains Designed for life ‘This collection is all about self-care and “better habits”. The result is perfectly imperfect— pieces that are a bit wrinkled, with a pre-worn handcrafted feel, making each piece unique.’ Sustainably-sourced natural materials like rattan, linen and cotton are at the heart of the range.
