glimpse into the many ways people create homes

we have of a home. A place where we, as human
beings, are supposed to feel safe. It was through
these journeys that the idea for making a film
investigating how we create home came up.
‘I’ve met human beings living on literally nothing,
but who insist on living poetically in a world that’s

Told in seven ‘chapters’, the film weaves its way
in and out of different dwellings all around the
world, as contributors reflect on home and
belonging. It also draws on the ideas of time, our
natural surroundings and the vulnerability of human
existence. What makes a home? The question
lingers long after the credits end.

Interior designer Sarah lives with her husband Gigi
and daughters, Beatrice and Mathilde, in a two-
bedroom house that they restored on a quiet hillside
outside Genoa. ‘For us, it’s a space for savoring time
with family without distractions,’ she says. ‘It took
us three years to re-build the house. We kept the
old shell of the building, which used to be a
dancehall during WWII, but completely re-did the
interior. It isn’t perfect – for example, I’d like a
different kitchen layout – but we’ve put our love
into it. And it suits us. Each room bears the traces
of our family, of precious everyday moments.’

‘FÖRNYAD is straight-up fun,’ says Darcel. The
