WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Home News Secretary Kolar Wisconsin Department Wisconsin Department of of Veterans Affairs Veterans Affairs Secretary Mary M. Kolar Wisconsin Veterans Home at King A fter so many long months, I am happy to see that family visits have started at the Veterans Home at King. While our members’ family and friends have shown their support through virtual visits, phone calls, letters, and more, I know nothing beats a face-to-face meeting. Thank you for your Commandant patience while we worked to meet the criteria required to allow for these Tammy Servatius safe, socially distanced visits. This is one of the first steps to getting back to regular visits, and it is wonderful to hear that families are reuniting and have had the chance to catch up in person. Ainsworth Hall Executive Director At King, due to our large size, with multiple residence halls and a separate Douglas Wamack quarantine area, we are able to have these visits in the areas that meet the necessary criteria, while other buildings and areas may not be eligible due MacArthur Hall to COVID-19 cases or potential exposures. The nature of this virus means that sometimes we also have to cancel visits. Please understand that we Executive Director hate cancelling visits, but we must do what is necessary to keep our Home Greg Reichenbach as safe as possible. Of course, as soon as that building is eligible for visits again, we are excited to reschedule. Olson Hall Executive Director We continue to work hard to safely keep active between visits. In fact, as part of Activity Professionals Week at the end of January, we recognized Rhonda Kozik the activities staff at our veterans homes and all they do to enrich the lives of our members. From family car parades and holiday celebrations, to virtual visits, arts and crafts, hallway bingo and more, the creative activities teams bring the “fun” to our Homes – even during a pandemic. Finally, I am so grateful for a smooth COVID-19 vaccine distribution and proud of the members and employees who have already received both doses of the vaccine! For our family and friends who are not members or staff at our veterans homes, please know that the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is working to get the COVID-19 vaccine to continued on page 4 2

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Home News Joan Grawvunder WVH-King Member Blessed-Babies W OW! They did it! We are blessed with another new great-granddaughter. Ruth Marie was born at 7:31 p.m. Oh, my, she is so beautiful!! She has such beautiful, kissable cheeks. I can’t wait to try them out! She has two wonderful big brothers that will be meeting Ruthie sometime this afternoon. I would love to see them meet their new little sister. It probably will be a little noisy because the boys will be so excited meeting their new little sister. Ruthie’s daddy hasn’t seen her yet because he is a proud military man serving in the middle east somewhere. He was able to be there via video chat to watch as his baby girl come into this world. However, he hasn’t been able to meet her in person or hold her yet. What rejoicing there will be when he is finally able to do that! There have been other celebrations in the past as the boys were born but now it’s a girl again! Thank you, Jesus, for Mama’s safe delivery of this beautiful baby. Please bless both mama and Ruthie with good health and safe keeping through the days and years as they go by! Thank you, Jesus for all the joy you give this family. We are so blessed! We have two pretty little girls in my grandson’s house family and oh what fun they are! The stories we have heard about our sweet little Raven just causes shock, giggles, and at times hysteria. We, just don’t know how a 2-year-old little girl can know all the things that come out of her mouth. It totally confuses her daddy! In only 3-4 years our family has been blessed with 9-10 young children, just here in Wisconsin. So far, I have had no info coming in from my Missouri family, but I do know there are at least two that I know about. If I have counted correctly, we should be able to give a loose rundown of beautiful children in our family, under the age of four years old. So, in Clintonville there are 2 little girls in one household. continued on page 11 6

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Home News Getting to know our Team Meet Deborah Suchon H ello fellow volunteers, my name is Deborah Suchon! What an honor it has been to be of service for the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, since 2018. I have met so many special people who reside at King and spending time with them is so rewarding. I have met many friends also as a bonus, by being a volunteer. We all have the same goal, to be of service to our Veterans! I live with my husband, Conrad Suchon, a Vietnam Veteran who is dealing with many of the same issues the King Vets are dealing with. We live in Stevens Point, WI and have a blended family with a lot of grandkids. I recently retired after 35 years working in the medical field. Since my children were young, we have volunteered any time we were given the opportunity to. I am a member of the Department of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary as a state officer, I am also the AMVETS Auxiliary 1051 President, Stevens Point. I belong to several Veterans organizations, VFW, DAV, and work with the Honor Flight in Central Wisconsin. I also serve on the King Rec Committee with two other AMVETS Auxiliary Members. My introduction to King was from the AMVETS Department of Wisconsin, which does a King weekend in September and that is when I realized how special it was to be with the King members. It only takes an hour or two a week or as much time as you want to devote to King to be a volunteer. The opportunities are endless with all the projects and areas that you can volunteer, and you’re given the opportunity to voice your ideas for projects and we all have talents that can be very useful as a volunteer. I cannot wait to get back on campus and see all the smiling, beautiful faces of the King members that I have missed since Covid-19 has prevented us from being on campus. With vaccines in our future, lets hope that changes soon! 8
Chaplain’s Column WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Ben Schroeder Protestant Chaplain AGAPE LOVE O ne Valentine’s Day morning Emma woke up with a start. Her husband Jim asked what was wrong. She told him, “I just had a dream that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s Day. What do you think it means?” “You’ll know tonight,” Jim said. That evening Jim brought home a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, Emma opened it…only to find a book entitled “The Meaning of Dreams.” I recently came across that piece of Valentine’s Day humor, which brought a smile to my face. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the month of February, and many couples will have exchanged gifts. Walgreens is still filled with red…red heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, red Valentine’s Day cards, and red flowers for the occasion. Red is the symbolic color for love. And people around the world are celebrating romantic love, which is a gift from God. Yet there is a much higher form of love than romantic love. The origin of Valentine’s Day is Christian in nature. There are records of different Christian leaders in the early church named Valentine. One stands out among the others. And this record refers to a historical figure named Valentine from Rome in the third century. He was a Christian priest during the reign of Emperor Claudius. During this era polygamy (the practice of having more than one spouse at the same time) was the accepted practice of Roman society. Christians practiced monogamy (the practice of being married to one spouse at a time) as taught by Scripture and Jesus. Many Roman citizens observed the devoted love Christian couples had for one another, and they became attracted to Christianity. This kind of love reflected Christ’s committed love for the Church and the Church’s committed love for Christ. Many Roman leaders in government were troubled by the strong influence of the Christian faith. And they considered it a threat to their pagan culture and practices. As a result, Claudius outlawed Christian marriages. Nonetheless, Valentine continued to marry Christians. Eventually he was arrested and imprisoned. In prison he continued to share Christ’s love and the Gospel, which continued on page 12 9

Also, in Waupaca our beautiful Rowan (who passed away) and one beautiful, gentle boy with the most beautiful eyes ever in another house. And in King 2 precious boys and one precious new baby girl. I hope it brings a smile to all of you as it does to me. What a blessing new babies are and oh what joy they bring to a family! WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Home News AGAPE LOVE continued from page 9 eventually led to his execution. Valentine experienced the highest form of love, God’s sacrificial love for him in Christ. Consequently, he extended sacrificial love to others even though it cost him his life. In the New Testament there are a few words used for love that have nuanced meanings. With that said, the Greek (original language of the New Testament) word used to describe God’s love for us is “agape.” And it means to love someone unconditionally, selflessly, and sacrificially. Here is a well-known New Testament verse that uses the word agape: “For God so AGAPED/LOVED the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16/NIV).” Another example that military service members are familiar with: “Greater AGAPE/LOVE has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13/NIV).” This kind of love is not a feeling but an action of the will. I remember hearing a pastor once explain that people who come into marriage without an understanding of agape love will be deeply disillusioned and disappointed. He said: “Some people get married and want an ideal. And then they get an ordeal. And then they want a new deal.” Agape love says: “I will continue to apply loving actions towards you even when I don’t feel like doing so. I will continue to love you even when it hurts me, and it is not returned.” As followers of Jesus, we are all called to love others this way. But if we are honest, we have all failed to do this to one degree or another. For some this has resulted in broken marriages and divorces. For all of us this has resulted in wounded relationships with family members and friends at different times in our lives. Here is the Good News: God AGAPE/LOVES us. Although it hurt Him deeply to sacrifice His one and only Son, He did so because that was the only way to save us from our sins (John 3:16). Jesus’ RED- colored blood was sacrificially shed for us so that our sins of lovelessness and selfishness could be taken away (Hebrews 9:22). Jesus’ resurrection from the dead confirmed that God, the Father, accepted Jesus’ love-based sacrifice for all our past, present, and future sins. By faith in Jesus, we now stand in a right relationship of love with God. (Romans 5:1). Having experienced God’s AGAPE/LOVE we, as Christians, pursue daily extending AGAPE/LOVE to those around us like Saint Valentine did. Jesus said: “AGAPE/LOVE each other as I have AGAPE/LOVED you (John 15:12b/NIV).” We cannot do it in our own strength. Yet inspired by God’s love and strengthened by the Spirit’s power we strive to love others this way (2 Corinthians 5:14). And this also moves us to reconcile with others who have hurt us and whom we have hurt (Ephesians 4:32). Valentine’s Day is observed on February 14th. And this year, Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Christian season of Lent is observed on February 17th. The proximity on the calendar of both observances, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday, is meaningful. On Valentine’s Day many celebrate romantic love. On Ash Wednesday and during Lent, Christians consider the highest form of love, God’s AGAPE love for sinners like us. In this contemplative season, Christians reflect on Jesus’ AGAPE love that drove Him to bear the Cross for us and our salvation. continued on page 13 12
Home News WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING AGAPE LOVE continued from page 12 On Ash Wednesday, many Christians will receive the imposition of ashes on their foreheads and will hear the words: “For dust you are and to dust you will return (Genesis 3:19b/NIV).” And we will contemplate on our sinfulness, mortality, and God’s call to repentance and faith in Christ. Even as we do so we will be filled with hope and joy. When the ashes are imposed, they will be traced out in the form of the Cross. And believers will ponder anew the amazing AGAPE love of God expressed in the suffering and death of Jesus at Calvary to deliver us from sin, death, and the power of the Devil. His resurrection on Easter morning confirms that God, the Father, accepted His sacrifice on our behalf! In conclusion, I would like to share a true story that I read about a while back. Although I do not recall all the details the gist of the story is the following: After losing their thirteen-year-old daughter, the parents decided to donate their daughter’s organs to needy patients. They lived in Dallas. There was a sick, ten-year-old girl who lived in Phoenix. And her heart had experienced a degree of failure five years earlier. Most of the time the girl could only sleep. The parents of the thirteen-year-old girl decided to donate their daughter’s heart to this ten-year-old girl. After the successful heart transplant, the parents flew to Phoenix to meet the young girl. Not long after meeting her they asked for a stethoscope. They placed the stethoscope on the girl’s heart. And they listened to their daughter’s heartbeat in the body of this other little girl. It greatly moved them. They heard the beating heart of their daughter indwelling the body of another. For all of us in Christ, in a sense, God gave us the heart of His Son. And God hears His Son’s heartbeat in us now. We are now His beloved children. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who AGAPED/LOVED me and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20/NIV).” And Jesus’ heart now beats in us and moves us to AGAPE/LOVE those around us. What a privilege we have been given…to daily celebrate and share with others the highest form of love- Christ’s AGAPE/LOVE. WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Home News F or those of you who don’t know me, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Russ Butkiewicz and I will be assuming the role of Medical Director here at the Wisconsin Veterans Home – King. For the past thirty years I have had the great pleasure of caring for members at King as a physician and working with many of the excellent staff who work so hard to provide quality care for the people you serve. I look forward to my new role supporting all that you do especially during this time of great hardship. I also wanted to offer some “Thank you’s”. First of all, I would like to thank Dr. Strobusch for his many years of service as Medical Director. I would especially like to thank him for coming out of retirement to resume his role during this special time of need. I would also like to thank each and every one of you for all of your flexibility and efforts to adapt to the challenges the pandemic has presented. The pandemic has been filled with much uncertainty, change and sorrow. Thankfully, there is also a light at the end of the tunnel. This week, I received my second dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines have proven highly effective and will likely exceed expectations. If you haven’t yet, I would like to encourage you to consider being vaccinated. This is a way for you to help care for yourself, your family and friends and, yes, care for your co-workers and our members. Taking the vaccine will limit the likelihood of your contracting the disease and spreading it to others. It is also the way that we will likely be able to safely visit others, travel, attend gatherings and many other things that have been limited over the past year. For now, it is recommended that we continue with current masking and social distancing until further information is available regarding new variants of the virus and vaccination is more widespread. For those of you that are in the process of being vaccinated, thank you. For those who have not yet been vaccinated, I strongly encourage you to consider this step to help end the pandemic and to allow you and our country and society to take steps to return to a more normal state. Please also encourage those you care for to get the vaccine. If you have questions about the vaccine, I encourage you to discuss them with your healthcare provider. Together, we can work to bring the pandemic under control. Thank you for being the light for yourself and for others. If you have additional concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working with all of you. With deep gratitude for your service, Dr Russ 20
