Lesson 14: The year of the last census AGE RANGE Progression step 3 TIME 1 hour CURRICULUM LINKS Areas of learning and experience: Humanities (History) Cross-curricular skills: Literacy; Numeracy INTRODUCTION The last census in Wales and England took place on 27 March 2011. A lot of things happened that year! The royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton, the revolution in Egypt, which was part of the Arab Spring. There were also some exciting scientific discoveries and the release of the last Harry Potter film. The resident population of Wales and England on 27 March 2011 was 56.1 million, a seven per cent (3.7 million) increase since 2001. There were 27.6 million men and 28.5 million women in the two countries. In 2011, four out of every five (81 per cent, 45.5 million) residents of Wales and England described themselves as being in good or very good health. LESSON OVERVIEW The children will learn about the year 2011 by looking at the census data from that year and can add to this knowledge by researching events that occurred in 2011. LEARNING INTENTIONS To use data to inform our knowledge of the past. To research events from the past. KEY VOCABULARY Census, research, history YOU WILL NEED • The teacher’s guide to using the Nomis website to find 2011 Census data related to your school’s local area. • Other information from the 2011 Census (see Useful Links on page 7). • You may want to research events from 2011 to add to those suggested in the lesson plan. You can download this lesson plan, accompanying PDF charts and the PowerPoint presentation slides from the Let’s Count! website, www.letscount.org.uk 1
Progression The year of the last census step 3 ACTIVITIES FOR PROGRESSION STEP 3 Areas of learning and experience: Humanities (History) 1. Ask the children which month and year they were born in. You could collect this data in a chart and look for any patterns. Were any children born in 2011? (You could use the chart on page 3 or use the PowerPoint presentation slide via www.letscount.org.uk.) 2. Especially for years 4 and 5: Discuss the difference in number and what might explain this. Discuss how many children were born in 2011 and how many in another year. 3. Share some key events from 2011 with the class. This might include the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, or the release of the last Harry Potter film. You might also decide to focus on scientific discoveries, such as scientists proving that sharks are colour blind or the discovery of a new species of dolphin. Or you might look at facts about the UK (who was Prime Minister, for example), popular events, such as pop song number ones (please see the chart on page 4 – to save you time!) or world news. 4. Create a ‘true or false?’ fact file about 2011 for children to identify the facts about 2011, drawn from census data and other research. You could also include facts from the previous census year, 2001 and this year’s census, 2021. Children can attempt to sort the facts to determine if they are about 2011 or another year. (Please see the downloadable PDF Chart 3, Fact File, and the PowerPoint presentation slide.) Provide the class with texts or weblinks so they can research the events in more detail. (Please see the Useful Links on page 7 and the downloadable PowerPoint presentation slide.) 5. Using what they have discovered, children can then work in small groups to create a poster, artwork or fact file to represent the year. Why not include their birthday! 2
