SUBJECTS PUPILS ARE REQUIRED TO STUDY SEVEN SUBJECTS Three mandatory subjects Irish English Mathematics + 4 others + LCVP (eighth subject if qualify)
CHOOSE FROM Creative Group: Art, Music. Science Group: Agricultural, Chemistry, Physics, Biology. Business Group: Business Studies, Accounting. Practical Group: Home Economics, Construction, Design and Communications Graphics (DCG), Engineering, PE. Languages: French, German. Humanities: Geography, History. Subjects will be offered subject to demand.
Choose: Basic Core of five subjects: Irish, English, Mathematics, A Language, (French or German) A Science (Medicine/Nursing 2 sciences) TO KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN
The choice is yours to make. Seek advice from teachers, other students and family members. Choose subjects that you like and enjoy All subjects have a similar workload and the practical subjects have project work Aim for as many Honours subjects as possible in order to be in the best position for choosing colleges. The choices you make now will have consequences for future choices. For 3rd level entry – different requirements
TYPES OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS (HEI’S) 1. National University of Ireland (NUI) 2. University – UL, Trinity, DCU 3. Institutes of Technology – e.g. LIT, ITT, WIT, CIT. (Note: IT Tralee and CIT are to become the Munster Technological University, LIT and AIT have just announced that they will become a university also)
ENTRY TO HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTES 1. NUI – 2H5 and 4O6/H7 as a minimum. A language is required for entry except for SOME Science and Engineering courses. Must include Irish, English and Mathematics. 2. UL, Trinity and DCU – 2H5 and 4O6/H7. No language requirement unless you are planning to study a language. Must include English and Mathematics. 3. IT’s - 6 O6/H7 in English or Irish and Maths and 3 other subjects. In SOME specified courses a minimum grade of F2 in foundation level mathematics is accepted.
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR NUI’S WWW.NUI.IE H5 in TWO subjects, and O6/H7 in 4 other subjects in the Leaving Certificate recognised for entry purposes Subjects to include: Irish, English, Maths, a Language and three other subjects. Irish, English, Maths a Laboratory Science and two other subjects. DEPENDING ON THE COURSE – CHECK WITH THE COLLEGE WEBSITE. 6 best subjects are counted towards LC points.
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Commerce/ Economics courses require Mathematics Science courses require at least one Honours Science and/or Maths Engineering and Information Technology require O2 or H3 in Mathematics.
