LBNF NBI Replan Progress Jonathan Paley, Mandy Kiburg March 24, 2021 LBNF Beamline/NSCF Integration Meeting 1 Jonathan M. Paley
Neutrino Beam Instrumentation • In order to reduce risk, the Project moved all non-DOE tasks that had no commitments from Partners back on to the Project. This includes all Neutrino Beam Instrumentation (NBI) for alignment and monitoring. • We’ve been working to replan: • New WBS elements (broken into different components) and planning packages • The planning packages and schedule will aim to fit within the existing budget and schedule (eg, start dates in 2021 and end dates in 2026): • HADeS: $2M • MuMS: $3M • THI (Crosshairs + TPT): $1.67M • HLS (new, Horn Leveling System): $0.8M • Meet all milestones from other WBS • General strategy is to baseline on NuMI-style detectors 2 Jonathan M. Paley
Hadron Alignment Detector System (HADeS) • UT Austin (Karol Lang, PI) has agreed to deliver the detector • Provided detailed spreadsheet with costs for a 5x5 pad detector they are now building for NuMI • I have scaled M&S and Labor costs up assuming Original 7x7 hadron monitor a 13x13 detector configuration for LBNF: $350k built by UT Austin • Note: labor is extremely inexpensive. Anywhere else will raise the labor cost by a factor of 4-5x. • Major difference with NuMI LBNF Absorber, Hadron Monitor inside shielding block Concrete Concrete detector is that HADeS will be blocks-R Block -C retractable (and sit outside of beam most of the time). Shielding block Hadron • Fermilab will provide remote Steel Chain drive mechanism Monitor shielding handling, Vladimir has some Absorber Hadron Monitor initial concepts. core 3 Jonathan M. Horn Leveling System (HLS) • Jim Hylen presented (Sept. 26, 2019) the concept of using a HLS to monitor the vertical positions of the horns. • Sudeshna Ganguly has taken the lead on this and has done an amazing job. • HowCERN • In discussions with many sensors? experts, Reference HLS 2 inside PBE (near BPMs) + 2 from PBE to TH Target hall floor technology identified. floor (the one on TH floor is the reference one) + 1 at Utility corridor (same elevation as TH floor) + 5 inside battlement (at the same elevation as • Nearly complete M&S cost estimate TH floor) + 4 on bunker wall (same height as of the ones on top of horns) + 16 inside target chase + 1 on the other side of the utility corridor = 31 ($300k + cost of floor stands for If we consider Keith’s nook: sensors). 2 inside PBE (near BPMs) + 1 in the nook (same Utility Corridor elevation as the elevation on sensors at BPMs) + • Labor costs are being worked on 1 at Utility corridor (same elevation as TH floor) + 5 inside battlement (at the same elevation as These will be sitting on a stand, as the same elevation as TH floor TH floor) + 4 on bunker wall (same height as of the ones on top of horns) + 16 inside target chase + 1 on the other side of the utility corridor Water Lines = 30 8 units [above horn C and horn B, if we have stands at two different heights to make up 9 ft or 5 ft: that would add 4 (on horn C) + 4 (on horn B)] 1 channel per sensor, 2 splitters,1 for building Invar rods reference interferometer, 1 for splitting among 39 channels (31 channels+if extra 8 channels The sensors in red will be at the same height as the ones on the stand needed) Jonathan M. Paley above horn modules. Run 4 Invar rods from Target Hall floor level inside 4 Sudeshna Ganguly 5 battlement to the level of stand for each of sensors
THI: Crosshairs and Target Position Thermometer (TPT) • Crosshairs: • Going with Be crosshair for the upstream end of horn B • Cory has designed the brackets and crosshairs. Some more work to do on FEA and drafting. • Fairly complete cost and schedule in hand. • TPT: • FNAL will provide requirements and specs, and will procure and assemble Be components. RAL will do design and drafting. • May need beam studies to determine size and positions of components. • Labor and M&S costs are being worked on now (mostly by Cory). 5 Jonathan M. Paley
Muon Monitor System (MuMS) • Planning on a NuMI-like system. • UT Austin built these for NuMI, but has lost some expertise. Nevertheless, they could do this and are interested. • We are also pursuing another detector option: electron multiplier tubes (EMTs) • Have 3 on loan from KEK • Beam test scheduled for end of March 2020 was canceled, hoping to do some tests later this year. 6 Jonathan M.
