NEWSLETTER TERM 2 WEEK 10 2021 Kia ora tatou katoa Dear Parents/Caregivers/Whanau As we draw to the close of another busy term at Prep, it is a good time to take stock of all that has been achieved in learning within and beyond the classroom for all of our students. We are sure you will find evidence of this contained within the students’ mid year reports. Our focus for social studies this term has been ‘Heritage’. Students have been working through a range of learning experiences from Te Ara Taonga o Whakatū– The Treasure Path of Whakatu, Museum Walk where the identity of our local community was reflected in public art and sculpture. The students considered their own identities through the heritage of the College, the Prep School and their families. Activities included visits to Fairfield House, Fairfield Park, Melrose House, Pikimai and creating their own Tree of Life. Learning programme continue at all times to focus on the fundemental learning needs, especially recall of basic facts, fluency in reading and punctuation and sentence structure. Improvement of these are both current Prep School targets. I would like to thank all of our school community for its ongoing support of our school and students this term. As the girls leave for their school holiday, we have spoken to all of them about the importance of getting as much rest, quality sleep and relaxing downtime as possible. A good recharge of their batteries will greatly contribute to Term 3 being both enjoyable and productive. To this end we have put some top tips for sleep on Page 2. We wish you all a relaxing holiday. TOPS TIPS FOR SLEEP x 1. (This is a really important one!) Stop using your computer (for games or watching YouTube) at least an hour before going to bed. Your computer tells your brain to wake up and that’s the last thing you need as you are trying to settle down to sleep. 2. Go through the letters of the alphabet and try and think of an animal that goes with each letter e.g : A is for Alligator B is for Bear 3. e feeling v ng very sleepy u ar e feeli Yo are feeling v ry sleepy Try listening to a book or calming music to You are ling very sleepy fee You are ling very sleepy u e Yo are feeling ry sleepy u ve Yo are feeling ry sleepy help you fall asleep. PREP HOMEWORK CLUB A big shout out to all the girls who have taken full advantage of this term’s Homework Club. The club has been such a wonderful success for those who had participated with the kind assistance of our senior students giving up their time to help and tutor those girls who wished to further their skills. The Homework Club is not just a place to finish your set home learning, but a place where students can take advantage of receiving some one to one help in areas they are finding difficult, or even to move ahead in areas such as Reading Plus. We hope to see the same excelent numbers turning up next term – Thursday 8.30–9 am every week. 48-HOUR FAMINE In June, Rosie Slack, Eloise Hall and Alyahna Sanson-Rejouis particpated in the 40 Hour Famine. Instead of not eating for 40 hours they both ate four foods for 40 hours as well as not using furniture for the duration of that time. Together they raised $350 for the people in sub-Saharan Africa. Well done Rosie, Eloise and Alyahna. 3
HERITAGE STUDY Researching for information can mean you have to do some looking around, rather than just reading books or relying on Google. It was fun to learn about our history and that if the Murchison earthquake had never happened the Boys College students wouldn’t have moved to Fairfield and maybe Prep students would still be having lessons at Fairfield. In the evenings, Boys College teachers used to teach older students at Fairfield House in subjects that weren’t “ladylike” such as Science and Maths. Did you know that Prep students used Melrose House as their classroom for learning in the 1970s? Opposite is a photo that is our attempt at a replica of the original photo that was taken at the time when Prep students had their schooling at Fairfield House. If you ever visit the main front room overlooking the courtyard, picture 27 desks with Prep pupils sitting studiously doing their work. 4
S CIEN CE In the last few science lessons we have been changing the colour of flowers. To change the colour of the flowers we have put food coloring in beakers and split the end of the flowers stalk so the food coloring can work its magic. This was such a cool experiment to watch and observe about, we even split the rose stalk in half so the rose could be two different colors. Another experiment has been growing bean and sunflower seeds to see if they can grow in the winter. Each group has had three pots with seeds in them, they can either have a heat lamp to support the seeds for heat and more sun. Or they can have the windowsill, or plane shade. This is quite exciting to watch them grow, and record results. Written by Ivy Scutt 8PN In Science 7TP have been growing some beautiful crystals. To make the crystals we took copper sulphate solution. We then took copper sulphate powder and dissolved it in a beaker over a bunsen burner. We then took a crystal seed and tied it to a piece of string and then dipped the string into the crystal solution making sure it did not touch the bottom of the jar and then tied the top of the string to a pencil which rested on top of the jar. Over the last few weeks we have been checking the crystals every time we go to science to check how much bigger they have grown. As you can see from the photo, they became quite large and beautiful. You should not touch the crystal as it may give your skin a reaction. by Lucy Jennings and Caitlyn Whiting 7TP 6
S CIEN CE 8PN have been creating tabletop croquet courses as part of this terms Alice in Wonderland unit. They have used this to examine how forces work to make objects move or stop, go faster or go slower. Most of the forces that they have learned about are pushes, pulls and twists - gravity, support, thrust and friction - and what happens when a combination of these are applied to an object, such as a flamingo head hitting a hedgehog around a Croquet Course. Each group created a table top game, made a poster about forces and wrote out their own special rules for how the game should be played. Here are some photos of the amazing creations. 7
DDS In DDS this Term we are working a project called Makey Makey, we must make instruments out of everyday objects for example cutlery, food and ourselves. We had different options on which sound we could choose to make with our instruments. Such as, percussion, melody, bass and more. A challenge for us was having to keep the work saved on a computer and making sure everyone in your group has a job to do. A success for us was getting the right notes for the song and once we got over the struggle it was enjoyable. It was great to work together and collaborate to get the best result and bring together everyone’s ideas. Written by Tayla & Charlotte 8
MU SIC AT PRE P For this newsletter, we thought it would be great to see what some of our girls are up to with their music and performing arts. All students were invited to send in their musical involvement and achievements – it would seem though that some are either forgetful or modest as we know there are many musicians out there who haven’t let us know. Anyway, below are the students who have given us an update. ALYAHNA SANSON-REJOUIS I am in the Year 8 band and take music lessons at school and outside of school. So far this year I have done around three major performances as well as entering a competition (we are still waiting for the results). My last big performance was a couple for weeks ago and was held at NCMA. I also performed at Te Ramaroa (the Nelson light show) I am stepping in for the lead singer in my cousin’s band. They have been a band roughly five years and it’s super exiting to be able to play with a band that has been together for such a long time. Earlier this term I went to Wanaka to take part in an event called YAMI (Youth and Adults in the Music Industry). It was a weekend of workshops and mentoring for young musicians that included topics like: song writing, beat making, recording your original songs and collaborating with others. There were lots of well known NZ artists and music industry professionals coaching us in all of the workshops. The event ended with a big showcase of original music developed over the weekend where I got to perform one of my original songs with a high school rock band from Queenstown that I met on the course. The showcase concert was so fun and it was cool to hear a huge variety of original music from other kids. It was a really amazing and inspiring weekend, and I felt super lucky to have been able to go. MID-WINTER CONCERT KIDS BIG SING Next Term the entire Prep Choir will be performing The Prep Choir will also be in the NCG Mid-Winter Music Concert. This is on Friday 13 August. All students are expected to performing at the Kids Big Sing on attend in their uniform, including school jumper. Wednesday 1 September. This will be There will be a final rehearsal for the choir on both during the day 11 am to 4 pm Sunday 8 August between 3 pm and 5 pm at and also in the evening 5.30-7.30 pm. NMCA on Nile Street, Nelson. 9
MU SIC AT PRE P DAISY MONCRIEFF I recently took part in the Smokefree Rock Quest with Mia Coldicott from Garin College and were placed 3rd in the solo/duo audition. The next stage was to submit a fifteen minute demo of four original songs. We didn’t find this out until two weeks before the due date so in that time we had to create three new songs, which was fun but also a bit stressful. We got there in the end. We spent all day the Friday before the due date recording the four songs live which took a few takes. We faced some interesting challenges along the way but it was such a cool experience and I learned a lot. The filmed recordings have now been sent away for the judges to decide who goes through to the national final. Good luck Daisy. SOPHIA AND MAIA EAGLE Sophia plays guitar, bass, piano and does musical theatre. She is performing in Cats as Victoria/Jemima (singing, dancing and acting) these coming holidays. Maia plays the guitar, drums and is learning piano at school. She also tried Cello. She’s playing Quaxo and Mungo Jerrie in Cats with Nelson Youth Theatre these holidays. Nelson Youth Theatre produce some wonderful shows with a couple coming up at the Theatre Royal involving quite a few prep students. Cats and Aladdin during the holidays, along with Gillian Frances’ Coppelia in August. ELOISE HALL I’m Eloise Hall from 8VC and I am part of the Nelson Youth Theatre. I recently had the part of Grandpa in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I am now in the upcoming production of Aladdin. I am learning the piano and I really enjoy participating in afterschool Prep drama. 10
