Dear Team – Last week all our school leaders came together in Barcelona for our third annual Cognita Global Education Leadership Conference. With the theme of ‘Preparing Our Students for the Future’, it was an inspiring week of insights from experts in societal trends, brain development, clinical psychology and – most importantly – from our school leaders themselves. Mental wellbeing was a major focus and a number of our leaders shared practice from their schools. We also did collective work to develop key actions and principles that we, as a global group, can take forward to address mental wellbeing. Arguably the most pressing issue facing education today, mental wellbeing is fundamental to our vision for a Cognita education based around academic excellence, character development and global perspective. In short, it is the necessary foundation for success in all these areas. I look forward to sharing with you how our work in this area develops ~ another example of the collaboration we’re building across Cognita. Our unique strength is the diversity of experience across our global family. Sharing this makes us all stronger and helps us improve the education we provide. Just this week we moved forward with MyCognita, our new global platform for sharing news, ideas and learning, as more colleagues from Europe and Asia can now access it. The platform is rolling out to all 7,000 of our people globally over the coming months and will make it easier for us all to connect and share. Be sure to let me know your thoughts and ideas at any stage via chrisj@cognita.com. All the best, Chris
A focus on mental health & wellbeing at our Global Education Leadership Conference Our Global Education Leadership Conference 2018 was entitled ‘Preparing Our Students for the Future’. The conference centred on the key themes of student mental health & wellbeing and student leadership. As well as playing host to some truly inspiring external speakers, school leaders led sessions on the theme of mental health & wellbeing, sharing expertise on topics as wide-ranging as the impact of food, positive education and solidarity projects. To conclude the conference, we recognised the schools and their leaders who have demonstrated exemplary performance, leadership and educational excellence in the last 12 months with our O-wards. Launch of MyCognita and CognitaPeople We’re excited to confirm that the rollout of our new global intranet, MyCognita, and HR platform, CognitaPeople, is now underway! This follows a successful pilot with a group of early adopters from all three regions, plus a handful of schools in Europe, to gather feedback on what works and what needs to be improved. So far, we have given access to schools in the UK, Spain and AIS Singapore as well as regional offices in Europe and Asia. The roll out will continue to Latin America and Stamford - Hong Kong in the next few weeks, followed by our other schools in Asia. MyCognita and CognitaPeople will enable us to connect with colleagues around the world, sharing ideas and experiences and facilitating global collaboration projects. They will also provide valuable learning content to help with professional development and keep us all up to date with what is happening around our network. Katie Miller-Chalk, Key Stage 2 Coordinator at Quinton House School in the UK, says: “This is a really exciting time for Cognita and the Cognita community. Soon, we will be able to communicate with all 70 schools through MyCognita and take forward ideas and teaching strategies that are being used around the globe. This is a new way to bring us together and for us to appreciate that we have colleagues who we can work with not only in our own schools, but in other areas.” Cognita Collaboration

Sharing a common language Teachers from International School Saigon Pearl in Vietnam headed to Bangkok, Thailand to learn from the Languages team at St. Andrews International School, Dusit earlier this month. The collaboration began following a conversation between Heads of School Lester Stephens and Caroline Ratcliffe. Having recently introduced positive changes to their Languages programme at St. Andrews, Caroline felt they could support their colleagues to do the same. The successful trip saw lots of ideas and strategies exchanged on planning, assessment and pedagogy. Both schools are excited for future collaborations. What is it like to experience a typhoon? Grade 3 students from International School Saigon Pearl in Vietnam were concerned for the welfare of their friends in Stamford - Hong Kong in the wake of Typhoon Mangkhut so they reached out to them to find out what had happened.
