Principal’s Report Dear Families, Welcome to Week 4. I cannot believe we are nearly halfway through the term. I have the privilege of writing this week’s Principal report as Mr Craft will be away for the first two days this week, welcoming the newest addition to his family, another grandson. This week is especially busy for both staff and students, with many different activities going on within the school. Firstly, students in Years 3/5/7 & 9 will be undertaking their NAPLAN at different stages throughout the week in literacy and numeracy. We encourage all students to attend and undertake the NAPLAN tests as it supports the school to identify areas of strength and focuses for student improvement. Thankyou to Mrs Anderson and Mr Stevens for all of their hard work in getting the students set up online and I know that Mrs Anderson and Miss Pearsall have also been sending practice papers home to students. I wish all these students good luck over the coming days. I know that all of you will try your very best. Ms Starkey has arrived at our school this week. She has really been enjoying getting to know the students and is settling into the daily routines of our school. This Friday, we will be hosting our annual Athletics Carnival. You will notice that it is earlier than normal, however this needed to occur due to both PSSA and CHS Zone carnivals being hosted at Ariah Park in Week 9. We will be walking down to the Town Oval at 9am and will commence events at 9:30am. I cannot wait to see all students dressed in their house colours, supporting their houses with pride, as they chant down to the oval.
We have previously mentioned in the last couple of newsletters that students would have one attempt recorded at school. However, after careful consideration and discussions, we have concluded that all students will have 3 attempts on the day of the carnival. I would like to encourage all students across K-12 to have a go on the day, no matter what your ability is. Sometimes you will be surprised at what you can achieve when you “play the game”. This week we also welcome Miss Horne’s baby boy, Archie Edward King, who arrived into the world early Sunday morning. Both Archie and Miss Horne are doing very well. School News Athletics Carnival On Friday this week, we will hold our APCS Athletics Carnival. All students from K-12 will be departing Ariah Park Central School at 9am to walk down to the Town Oval. Please ensure you are at school prior to 9am. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours on the day. Events will commence at 9:30am. Please be aware that the program times are indicative. If your child/ren finish an event early, they will move onto the next one if it is available. All Primary students will be supervised by a teacher on the day. If you need to take your child for any reason, please let the supervising teacher know. This year, infants will be participating at the carnival for the entire day. There will be a designated area of the field, where they will be participating in their own interpretation of field and track events. If you would like to watch your child/ren in their events, please listen out for the announcements of these events throughout the day on the PA. Thank you to Ms Studholme and Miss James for running these events for the students. The canteen will not be open around 10:30-11am. This allows our wonderful P&C volunteers time to prepare. There will be a large range of delicious food available and make sure you pre-order lunch, so you do not miss out. The buses will be picking students up at the oval in the afternoon. If you intend on making a change to your child/ren’s regular afternoon routine (such as picking them up directly from the carnival), please let the front office staff know. 4

School News NAPLAN Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 will undertake NAPLAN tests this week. Students have been practising the structure of the tests and the types of questions they may be asked. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. We encourage all students in Year 3,5,7 and 9 to attend and undertake the NAPLAN tests as it supports the school to identify areas of strength and student improvement. We wish all students the best of luck and are proud of their efforts for having a go. School News PBL Update Staff will begin handing out our new embossed PBL tokens. These tokens are a fast and frequent reward given to students who display our school wide expectations and positive behaviours. They become part of each class/stage reward count. Each classroom will have a class/stage bucket to fill. See bucket example below. Each class/stage will work towards a goal each week to beat their previous level. At the end of the week if they reach their goal level they will receive a whole class reward. Students pick these rewards each week from a list of rewards which has been compiled by students and teachers. These class bucket tokens then count towards our whole school rewards day. Our class/stage buckets will be emptied into our whole school count trays displayed in the front office each week. See count tray below. PBL Team 9

School News Year 1 Year 1 have been learning to use pan balances to measure the weight of items. They used their skills to estimate and then measure the weights of items around the classroom by using everyday things such as pencils, Base 10 longs and unifix cubes. We are currently starting to learn addition and subtraction skills in Maths. In writing, Year 1 have been learning to write informational texts on different animals. They are learning to use the writing processes to create their texts. We have practiced planning and drafting thus far. Each week we look at a new animal to learn different facts about. We view videos, audio books and physical books to gain our information and look at how the text is set out. In History, Year 1 and 2 have been busy investigating what the past, present and future is all about. We have looked at words that help us to understand whether it is the past, present of future. We have looked at the calendar using days, months and years to help us remember when special days are upon us and we have investigated how different cultures celebrate special days. Last week we were very luck to have Rusty the Reading Dog in our classroom. Brigette and Rusty come in every second week on a Tuesday to help with Reading Groups. The students enjoy reading with Rusty and Brigette helps with group activities. Ms Studholme 16

School News Sport News NSWCHS Girls State Basketball Championships Congratulations to Georgia who spent last week representing Riverina at the State Basketball Championships in Maitland. Riverina finished in 9th position overall. Georgia saw plenty of court time and was a wonderful contributor in both defence and attack, taking on the older players without hesitation. In the first game she proved herself with a huge 3 pointer and finished that game with 9 points and the second highest scorer that game. Over the carnival Georgia shot 29 points and finished as the fifth highest point scorer for Riverina, averaging 6 points per game while also being a strong reliable defence player. Georgia was commended on her performance and attitude by the Riverina coach. Well done Georgia! Miss Saffy Relieving Sports Coordinator 20

School News NSWPSSA State Australian Football Championships Last week Joe & Cooper represented Riverina at the NSW PSSA Australian Football State Championships at Byron Bay. Riverina was in Pool X and on day 1 played 3 matches. The first match against Sydney South West resulted in a great win. The second against Sydney West was much more physical and the boys also won this game. The last match of the day was against Polding and unfortunately they lost, the boys didn’t quite have the same run as their opponents. Day 2 started with a great win against Western which saw Riverina finish second in their pool. The first cross pool final was against CIS and unfortunately the boys weren’t able to come away with the win. Day 3 was for all the finals. Riverina was battling it out for 7th place against Hunter. In a tight game Riverina showed their determination and skill and were able to come away with a great win. They played with pride and should be very proud of the way they played. Congratulations should also go to the Mackillop side who took out the championship. It was a great week for Joe & Cooper. Both boys played well and should be commended on their sportsmanship and the way they carried themselves on and off the field. They both learnt a lot from the experience and should be proud of their efforts. Miss Saffy Relieving Sports Coordinator 22

We had lights, a great crowd and lots of bugs! Our 11s battled hard all game against a strong Narrandera side. Letisha Clune chased lots of loose balls all quarter and made herself an option coming out of defence. Ruby Prentice came in at C and strongly contested all quarter. She gave us a strong opinion to move the ball down court, with a great attitude and lots of passion! Amelia Haddrill tried out WA and was a good option to get to our goals. Montana Crouch did us proud in GS on some bigger opponents and worked hard to get in front. The 3rd quarter was awesome. Community News Round 3 Jets v Narrandera Football Reports Under 11’s Northern Jets 10 14 74 def Narrandera Eagles 3 0 18 Our Mighty Under 11’s made the trip down the Newell Highway to Narrandera and again showed that winning on the road is possible. In what only can be described as an annihilation of a much fancied opposition, as our boys really hit their straps. Liam Edis dominated across the half back line and won the Ariah Park Ardlethan Pharmacy socks. He marked everything that came at him and used his raking left foot to turn solid defense into many attacking moves. Cooper Herden played an inspired game after travelling back home from a week of representative duties. Congratulations to Coops in winning the Beckom Roadhouse $10 award, playing in the ruck for most of the day. Coach and staff were pleased with the development of the younger team mates, Leo Furphy, Finn Leiper and James Chalmers played pivotal rolls up forward. Billy Strickland and Dallas Haddrill controlled the wings while Cruze Batterham and Hayden Walsh didn’t allow the Eagles Forwards to get any easy ball. Without a doubt the highlight of the day was when our little forward pocket rocket, Fletcher Davey, ducked and wove to snag a goal midway through the third term. The coaches and crowd erupted into raucous cheers. As if this wasn’t enough, he then took a strong grab. Went back and signaled his intention with a gesture and slotted one from fifty. The crowd was deafening as Fletch cooly iced the game. Fletch collected the “Two Ben’s” $10 award.
