Challenge Week 13th July 2020 — 17th July 2020 Welcome to ‘The Challenge of a Lifetime’ Dear Parent/Carer As a school we are extremely proud of the diversity in the curriculum that we offer students at Liskeard. After a highly successful Challenge Week last year, we are looking forward to running the week again this year. Challenge Week gives students in Years 7 –9 the opportunity to embark on a journey; this may be a journey to explore new places or a journey that explores hidden talents and skills. Above all, it is a chance to learn about themselves and how they learn. In short - a journey of self-discovery. This is an exciting week, where the curriculum is enriched by providing students with activities that cannot normally take place in an average day. We are offering a range of activities, varying in cost, with some being a minimal contribution or free, which allows all students to participate. The cost of each activity is shown on each page along with the required deposit and dates for each instalment. Please note that there may be some financial assistance for pupil premium students. If a student does qualify for financial assistance the deposit, which is non-refundable in all circumstances, must be paid by the student in the first instance. It is with this in mind that I ask you to ensure your son/daughter selects their activity carefully. Please read through this booklet to learn more about the exciting opportunities. Overleaf you will find some handy hints and tips and I would be grateful if you could read these before your son/daughter makes his/her final choice. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or the member of staff who is organising the activity, if you need further information. Mr M Lemin Challenge Week Co-ordinator
Before reserving your place on an activity, please take a few moments to read these tips: IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU SHOW THIS BOOKLET AND TALK WITH YOUR PARENTS/GUARDIANS Talk to your friends to find out what activity they will be doing Only pick an activity that you think you can do. It is not easy to change your choice after the deadline, so you may be disappointed Talk to the activity leader if you have any questions Be aware of relevant deadlines Know your budget so can ensure you book onto an affordable activity The important bit The activity selection process is slightly different this year. Traditionally we offer our Year 9’s the first chance to choose, followed by the Year 8’s and finally the Year 7’s. This will remain the same allowing the older students the best chance of getting their first choice, in what is their last year of being involved in the school’s challenge week. However, in a change from previous years students will now be able to secure their place on their chosen activity by simply paying the required deposit (detailed on the activity page). This can be done by either: Using the online ParentPay option Phoning the Finance Office on 01579 325712 and paying by credit or debit card Visiting the school Finance Office to pay using credit or debit card PLEASE NOTE THE SCHOOL DOES NOT ACCEPT CASH PAYMENTS The activity selection process will be live at 10.00am on the dates listed below: Year 9 Live on 25th February 2020 Year 8 Live on 02nd March 2020 Year 7 Live on 06th March 2020 What do I do now? Ok, you’ve had a good chat with your friends and you’ve read through this book with someone at home and you’ve found a really good activity that you would like to do. Choose the three activities you would like to do in order of preference (you only need to book one activity, the other two are only relevant if you are unsuccessful with your first choice ) . Fill in the form at the back of the booklet to remind you of your choices. On the date listed previously the activity selection process becomes ‘live’ for your year group. To secure your place pay the deposit as soon as possible. If that choice is not available or full, choose your second or third option.
Then what happens? Once the deposit has been paid, you have secured your place on the activity. You must continue to pay the instalments on the dates specified on your activity page or you will be removed from your activity choice and asked to choose an alternative activity. Please note that deposits cannot be refunded once we have booked places with activity providers. What is the final date for payment? All money must be paid by 31st May 2020 I’m confused, who can I talk to? Come and see MR LEMIN IN THE PE OFFICE OR MRS CORY IN THE FINANCE OFFICE at morning break or lunchtimes after 1.30 pm REMEMBER: ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE PAID BY 31st MAY 2020 OR THERE IS A POSSIBILITY YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE TRIP. IF YOU STILL OWE MONIES FROM PREVIOUS SCHOOL TRIPS YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND YOUR CHOSEN ACTIVITY UNTIL THE OUTSTANDING BALANCE IS CLEARDED.

Sailing Adventure Residential trip (this trip was advertised in September and is now full) The Sailing Adventure Challenge is a 6 day residential trip on a traditional wooden sailing ship. The week is run and overseen by The Island Trust, a charity specialising in getting young people interested in sailing and the sea. Whilst on the voyage, you could work towards RYA Start Yachting or Competent Crew. The voyages are great fun and an opportunity for learning. You will be involved in all aspects of sailing the boat: raising sails, steering, navigating. You will also be looking after the boat and themselves by helping with cleaning and cooking of meals. You may explore the beautiful coastlines of Devon and Cornwall or even go further afield if winds allow. You may drop anchor in a bay and go ashore for beach games and a BBQ, do a night passage and sail by the stars, swim from the boat, fish for your supper and more. Sailing training is proven to be a great way of learning teamwork, raising aspirations, gaining confidence as well as gaining new skills. The trip will be an amazing experience, but you should expect to get tired from the hard work and long hours on board. You will need to have some resilience and relish the sense of challenge to enjoy the trip. You should also be competent swimmers and able to swim 50m in clothes. The accommodation is fairly basic with small bunks. It is also likely that males and females will be sharing the spaces together. We will do everything practically possible to ensure your privacy, but space on boats is very limited! The cost of the trip is £495, payable in 4 stages: non-refundable deposit of £85 and three instalments through the year, to be paid in full by March 2020. The voyages depart and return to Plymouth Yacht Haven. The trip will start in the afternoon of Sunday 11th and will return on Friday 16th at 12pm. You will need to arrange transport for drop off and collection from Plymouth Yacht Haven. Places are extremely limited as there are only a certain number of places on the boats: places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis on return of all the permission forms and a non-refundable deposit of £85. For more information, see Dr. Shilling or Mr. Churchward.
