Last Sunday we had a very successful EGM with around 120 members turning up to hear from the RSA Trust about proposals for the future of the Club. Sue Brown presented an up to date financial report on the club which showed an amazing turnaround from the last two years. This is thanks to the current committee who have worked very hard to turnaround the previous 2 year’s deficit. On behalf of the RSA Trust, I presented a report on what the RSA Trust had been doing over the past 18 months to look at the future of the RSA. The Trust has been looking at ways the RSA can go into the future and has been in talks with Metlife (Oakridge), The Bowling Club, Bay of Islands Golf Club and the Turner Centre. They have also been looking for alternative smaller sections/premises that could be suited to the RSA. Metlife indicated they are only interested in the bare land, the Bowling Club are not interested in an amalgamation and we are still awaiting a meeting with the Golf Club. The Turner Centre has presented the RSA with a proposal to build a 4-story boutique hotel on the RSA site and incorporate an RSA within the ground floor of that building. Questions were then invited from the floor – with many good ideas being presented with regards the future of the RSA. The RSA Trust wanted approval from the RSA members for them to continue looking for alternative accommodation for the RSA. The motion was moved by Frank Lewis “to authorise the RSA Trust to pursue alternative accommodation options for the RSA members”. A vote of hands was taken, and it was passed unanimously. (See plans at end of newsletter). The RSA Trust thanked everyone for their support and said that the trust would do nothing without consultation and support of the members. We are continuing to get good support from our members at the club. If you would like to bring a few people for dinner and like a reservation, then please give us a ring on 09 407-8585 or email us at info@kerikerirsa.co.nz . Poppy Day 2018 Poppy Day this year was held on Friday 20th of April. The total collected on the day was $8290.00 which was slightly down on 2017. The RSA Welfare Committee would like to thank all those who volunteered to help and give up a little bit of their time to either sit at a collection site or be a roving collector around Kerikeri and Waipapa. Thanks also to the Kerikeri Cadet Unit who went around collecting on the following Monday. Thanks also to the Kerikeri Scouts who came and helped our collectors. ANZAC Day 2018 Once again, we had a very successful Dawn Service on ANZAC Day. A turnout of around 700 attended the service which was held on a beautiful Kerikeri dawn. This is only successful because of the large number of people who give their time to the RSA. This includes Kerikeri High School, Springbank School, Kerikeri Cadet Unit and Kerikeri
Scouts. Thanks also must go to First Electrical Ltd for providing lighting, Countdown Supermarket, Bidvest, Gilmours, Okaihau Butchery, Bright Distributors and Neil Gibson for sponsoring the breakfast, Kerikeri Garden Club for the grave posies and Robyn Steadman for the wreath. Thanks also to those volunteers who helped in aiding with tea & coffee, clearing up, washing dishes and helping to serve in the kitchen. Over 230 breakfasts were served. Civic Service David Clendon (Former MP) addressed the crowd of about 150 who had gathered. Peter Gill read a poem I selected called "Grandpa, “What did you do in the War" which was very well received. Then Bill Goddard gave a talk, like the one he delivered to the Dawn Service. Herbert Pryde, a reasonably new comer to Kerikeri, and a former Naval Chaplain, read the Ode. Georgia Doherty played the last post and reveille. We closed the service a simple blessing; It seemed that everyone there enjoyed it. I would love to do it again next year. Pam Harrison-Boyd Review of the Veterans Support Act 2014 Minister of Defence released the report on the Veterans Support Act 2014 on the 23 rd of May 2018. This report was done by Professor Ron Paterson of Auckland University. It is an extensive report and is worth a read. He made 64 recommendations to the Government to implement as soon as possible. Ron Mark MP, the Minister, has recommended to the Government that they accept all the recommendations. We now await to hear of the changes – some which have been promised to be implemented by Christmas.
