The Corvette Club of Hawaii enjoyed a somewhat somber Monthly Dinner at the Dixie Grill and Crab Shack in Aiea on the 18th of May. The dinners somber- ness was because of the news of our Membership Chair, Ron Kennedy’s pass- ing. However, it allowed those present to lift a glass and tell fond memories of our friend. Dixie Grill features food & drinks of the barbeque belt and coastal regions of the southeastern United States. According to their web site, “We’re always smok- in’ something” from brisket to turkey, along with southern favorites like fried pickles, okra, mac n cheese, Seafood? We got CRAB. Lotsa crab! Key Lime Pie & Banana Pudding for dessert. HUGE selection of whiskey & tequila, cold draft beer, and our sig- nature SCREAMIN’ MAI TAI”. We did not use reservations for Dixie Grill and Crab Shack. They were very glad to have us, but requested we not show up at the door in a party larger than ten. The manager stated he would ensure that we all get seated in as close proximity as possible, but to please observe their COVID-19 restrictions. True to his word, we were all seated near to each other. The food was great. Service was quick, and the drinks never got empty. For sure, we will return. This month’s monthly dinner will be on the 15 of June at the Big City Diner in Pearlridge. Once again, no reservations, so please request to sit on the lanai where we will all gather, but still observe, current COVID-19 restrictions. Starting this June, on the 3rd Saturday of each month, OMF will host an “Aloha Motor Festival” at the Aloha Stadium from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is a car show with multiple car classifications with “hidden” judges scoring each car in their category. Entry fee is $10.00 per car and proceeds go to a monthly charity that will be announced before each event. Ohana Motorsports Foundation (OMF) Cars and Coffee events represent informal early morning gatherings once a month comprised of something for everyone regardless of age, race, creed, color, gender, or vehicle type…. Everyday drivers, well maintained sports cars to classic and million-dollar sports cars attend and enjoy this world class, multiband, and multi-period display to share the emotions conveyed by the sound of powerful engines and the sight of so many stunning body lines. OMF local style Cars & Cof- fee is guaranteed to be great therapy for the soul offering fellowship, fresh hot coffee, therapeutic talk, and the cure – a drive in your car again! Plus this month they actually had coffee available. If you would like to get involved and support this great event or want to showcase your business and car products, then contact Keith Wertelka at Ohanamotorsportsfoundation@gmail.com to get plugged into the fun. For the CCOH, after the 300-plus car, truck, and motorcycle morning ex- perience, we will take a cruise along Oahu shores through several of the lo- cal towns and to enjoy the scenery, and the ride with friends and/or family. It will set your mind and body free for an afternoon and allow you to be re- minded why you own that car again. https://www.corvettemuseum.org/ 1998 Corvette Honoring Dale Earnhardt Donated At the 2021 Michelin NCM Bash, a key handoff ceremony was held for Jack and Dor DeLong who graciously donated their third Corvette to the National Corvette Museum. Previ- ously, these devoted NCM supporters donated two C4s that are already in the Museum’s collection. The new donation is a 1998 C5 Corvette that is a wonderful addition. This car has a connection to Dale Earnhardt and has a very touching back story. With it being the 20th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt’s passing in February, the timing of this donation was very fitting. At the ceremony, Di- rector of Collections/Curator, Derek E. Moore shares that “it is a very significant moment in time to remember Dale and what Jack and Dor have done to this car to honor Dale’s memory.” In 2003, the National Corvette Museum chose 100 Corvettes to participate in a tribute for Dale Earnhardt event in North Caro- lina where they visited Earnhardt’s facility. Jack was a big Earnhardt fan and was also present for his passing, so he submitted their 1998 C5 and it was chosen as the 23rd car for the tribute. After the car was chosen, Jack felt like he had to do something special. She had an airbrush artist paint under the 1998 Corvette’s hood to further honor the memory of Earn- hardt. Jack shared that it was a “wonderful memory” to have so many people from Earnhardt’s facility come out and look at the tribute art on their Corvette. As the opportunities would arise, Jack collected signatures on their C5. The car has 24 legible signatures that are all from the “who’s who” of Corvette. The DeLong’s have owned their 1998 C5 Corvette for a little over twenty-three years and it has been a very significant car in their lives. Through owning this car and participating in Museum events, the DeLongs have formed wonderful friendships with people across the country and relationships with car clubs. Of all the cars Jack DeLong has owned, this 1998 is his favorite and will “always be his baby.” They hope that the donation of this special Corvette reveals how much the Museum and Corvette truly mean to them. The DeLong’s feel that the National Corvette Museum is the perfect home for their cherished ’98. There was a little old lady from a small town in America who had to go to Texas. She was amazed at the size of her hotel and her suite. She went into the huge cafe and said to the waitress, who took her order for a cup of coffee, that she had never before seen anything as big as this hotel or her suite. "Everything's big in Texas ma'am," said the waitress. The coffee came in the biggest cup the old lady had ever seen. "I told you, ma'am, that everything is big in Texas," said the waitress. On her way back to her suite, the old lady got lost in the vast corridors. She opened the door of a darkened room and fell into an enormous swimming pool. "PLEASE!!!" she screamed. "DON'T FLUSH IT!!!" ~hank Henry (Hank) Ah Hee snrhank@gmail.com Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette https://corvetteclubofhawaii.com/ Vol. 49 Issue number 6 p. 16
Why do people join car clubs? Most car owners and even non owners find joining a specific car club very productive and exciting and some do not. People in general join car clubs because they want to meet new people and have fun with their car. If you are not having fun then what is the point of being in a car club? You need to be in a group that is willing to help you if you need help with something and get you back out on the road. If the Corvette Club of Hawaii is that Club for you, then share this publication with your friends and family. Copy the link from our Facebook page and post it on your page. Please help us get the word out that Hawaii’s largest professional Car Club is active and is a Club for everyone to enjoy. Our Club has grown a great deal over the years, and we are doing very well. Please renew your membership and keep the wheels of the Club rolling. A good time to do this is at the next Club General Membership Meeting or you can mail it to our P.O. Box. The Club dues are $24/single and $36/couple. Editors Notes: At the risk of repeating myself in this month’s newsletter, remember OMF will be hosting an Aloha Motor Festival the 3rd Saturday of each month! The Corvette Club of Hawaii Ohana recently lost a good and long-standing member. Ron Kennedy unexpectedly passed away on May 18, 2021. Ron joined the Corvette Club of Ha- waii in 2007, and he served asthe Membership Chairman in 2011, Vice President from 2013 to 2015, and again as Membership Chairman from 2018 to 2021. My words would not do Ron’s memory justice, but I think it is safe to say he was loved by all of us and touched many of our lives. Rest in Peace our friend.
