MVRMARC Visit us at www.modelaclub.org MVRMARC VALLEY NEWS June 2021 President’s Corner Contact Us By Gene Roehl, 2020 President, MVRMARC MARC National Meet at Oshkosh was well attended by our Missouri Valley representatives. Club Officers Prior to the meet, I expected the overall turnout to be down by around 50%, however the late President entrants boosted the attendance up to around 60 or 70 percent of a pre-COVID meet. The Gene Roehl, 618-977-2456 welcome banquet was held on Tuesday evening during which time national newsletter awards g4jroehl@charter.net were presented. Of the 74 regions represented, 14 of them received recognition or awards. The final announcement was for the best overall newsletter covers produced for the region’s Vice President newsletters. All of the Missouri Valley attendees were jubilant when the winner of this great Ryan Fine, 314-369-7474 award was announced for the Valley News, and its’ editors, Rich and Judy Dann! Wednesday ryan.fine@hotmail.com took us to Judging Day, Fine Point Judging had 17 entrants, and Touring Class Judging had 32. Missouri Valley had one entrant in the Fine Point category, and Touring Class had seven cars Treasurer judged. More details are provided either in an article in this issue of the newsletter, or a posting Dave Hitt, 314-960-8211 that appears GroupWorks. Check those out for the details. After spending a week in Oshkosh dhitt@hotmail.com for the National meet, your president and first lady will spend a short week getting refreshed and re-loaded for a trip with MAFCA to New Hampshire for their White Mountain Tour from Secretary Bill Schaefer, 618-667-3329 June 20th to the 24th. We are looking forward to that trip, as it is the first time that we have schaefer1944@icloud.com toured with the MAFCA club. We will also be meeting a few old friends and past co-workers that reside on the east coast during this trip. Our secretary, Bill Schaefer will also be going BOARD to this meet. He will be picking up his brother Don from Long Island, who is also a Model A David Fine (3yr) 636-447-3177 owner, then they are heading to the meet in N. Conway, NH. Jon and Alice Palm, Larry and dfine100@sbcglobal.net Gina Shepard, and Paul and Pam Ganninger are also going to this meet as well. We are all looking forward to more good times with fellow Model A’ers next week. Jon Palm (2yr), 314-619-4963 jonwaigandtpalm@gmail.com Take care, Gene Roehl, President Gene Cogorno (1yr), 314-503-6139 cogorno2@sbcglobal.net From the Editor Don McCallie (alt), 314-805-1862 By Richard Dann, Editor, Valley News 713-898-9237 donmccallie@msn.com I’m sitting in a hotel room in Albuquerque as I finish the June 2021 Valley News. This marks nine years of editing our monthly magazine. I can still remember Charlie Henerey asking for a Webmaster volunteer to do the newsletter way back in 2012. It was with some hesitation that I offered my Jon Palm, 314-619-4963 services, but then I thought to myself....What the heck? I’ll do it. And the rest is history. jonwaigandtpalm@gmail.com On this ninth anniversary of my tenure as editor, we learned some great news during the National MARC Meet in Oshkosh. The Valley News was awarded cover of the year. We Events Coordinator won in 2015, but it was a tie with another club. This time, the award was given solely to the Jim Flowers, 314-435-3252 MVRMARC. I am not sure what specific cover won, perhaps all of them, I don’t know. The jim63129@sbcglobal.net award was given to myself and Judy, but please remember this, nearly all cover shots for the newsletter in the last year were provided by Gene Cogorno. Then, we also must remember that Gene needed cars to photograph, and that is where you come in. So my thanks goes out to Editors everyone who submitted an article and had their car photographed for the Valley News. I guess what I am trying to say here is that it is a team effort that makes the Valley News....and I thank all of you who contribute. Lastly, it seems as though COVID restrictions are starting to come down. There seem to be less event cancellations, which is good for us. As always, use good judgement while interacting with large crowds, but don’t let it stop you from getting out there and enjoying your A. Regards, Rich & Judy (Front Cover) Jim Flowers 1929 “Secret Speedster”. The building housing the Jefferson Barracks Telephone Museum was constructed as a two-story duplex using Quartermaster Plan 115. It is one of two remaining structures that was part of Officers’ Row located on the north side of the former parade grounds. The parade ground, central to the entire post, was the site of military drill and ritual. Placement of quarters around the parade ground was a clear delineation of military rank, with officers on the northern perimeter. In 1909, electricity was added to the duplexes and bathrooms were installed in 1925. Sunrooms were added on the second floor and the first floor areas beneath Rich & Judy Dann, 713-898-9237 - each of the new rooms were enlarged in 1938. MVRMARC Anniversaries Lead-Foot Grandpa The following MVRMARC members have reached significant By Brett Huffman anniversaries with the club this year. My grandpa and I came across this 28 Sport Coupe in 1976 in a field in Boulder, Colorado. It was covered in mud and manure but Fred Burk - 60 year pin still showed some Niagara Blue peeking through. It was a favorite Larry Shepard - 40 year pin scratching post to the local cows. The farmer had long intentions Bruce Williams - 35 year pin of fixing it up, but it was a project in a long line of projects. David Colvin - 30 year pin My grandpa gave him a lowball offer - $200 I think. And the farmer told him to kiss-off. As the story goes, when his wife heard what happened, she told him to get his ass out the door, track us down, and take that offer. In the coming years my grandpa, and partially me, would tear the car apart and create a mountain-goat Model A. He put a 1932 4-banger in it with a police head (got to have 4 more HP), a B-W Overdrive from an old Hudson, and a tube radio out of an old Plymouth. Everything else is pretty stock (except the wheels, which work better with the overdrive.) It was all to get up in the mountains and enjoy the outdoors with his favorite car. My most vivid memory was us hauling ass while going around a corner. I was slightly leaning on the door. One moment I was in the car, and the next I was flying through the air and rolling down a ditch. My grandpa screeched to a halt and yelled out the open back, “What the hell are you doing out there? Get back in here and stop crying!“ To this day, I don’t lean on car doors! Stan and Mary Sorrels 1931 A400 received the MARC of Excellence A couple of years ago, I was visiting him and out of the blue, Award, and Henry Award at the MARC National Meet in Oshkosh, Wisc. The A400 garnered 493 points in fine-point judging. (Gene Cogorno) he said let’s go for a drive. I started driving as he was blind at this point. He couldn’t see 2 feet in front of himself. But soon he said, “Scoot the hell over. I’m driving!” With a screech, we took off down the back roads of Denver. I was his eyes, yelling at him to slow down, turn right, watch out for the mailbox, stop sign! Several times I had to do a frantic stop with the e-brake. My life flashed before my eyes. After about 30 minutes of this harrowing, E-Ticket ride, he went into a parking lot and stopped. He knew that was the last time he would drive her. When he passed a couple of months later I brought his beloved Sport Coupe to St Louis. It runs pretty well, but I think it misses his lead foot and the long mountain climbs. The Secret Speedster By Jim Flowers I’ve always thought about building an era correct speedster. I call it the Secret Speedster because I kept this project pretty much a secret until I started the build. I didn’t want to destroy a restorable car so I started to accumulate parts. Whenever I say ‘we’ it means me and Tom Holtgrave. It started in Branson at the 2018 MARC meet where I bought a 28 Closed Cab Pickup cowl and sub frame. I acquired the frame, axles, wheels and hood from Palmer Lawson. The brakes were like new and only needed cleaning up. The engine and transmission came from Tom Holtgrave. We pulled the pan and it was like new inside. The engine had a small frost crack that was repaired successfully with JB Weld. The gas tank ($60) and radiator shell ($40) came from Hershey. My brother-in-law Steve of Al’s South For Sale: 1928-1929 chassis. No motor or transmission. $300 OBO. With the running chassis we started sand blasting, metal prepping, welding, and priming. With body filling, sanding, body filling, sanding, body filling, sanding, etc. it was starting to come together. This would never have been done with out Tom’s advice, assistance, and critiquing. With the body in primer (January 2021), we trailered the car to my brother-in-law’s shop. We tore down the car so we could paint. After wet sanding and masking we painted the car a light gray (to help hide my body work flaws). About mid March 2021, after reassembling, I drove the car home. In April Don Pfitzinger designed and applied the graphics. I’ve been driving the 1929 Ford Speedster around South County and planned to unveil it to the club at the Museum of Transportation on May 16th. Because of the rain forecast I drove my town sedan. I plan on driving it to the Faith Church display on June 4th. I’m really looking forward to see how it will do at the Newport Indiana Hill Clime in October. Although the weather was warmer than expected or desired, the meet had a reasonable turnout, post pandemic, with roughly two-thirds attendance this year, over previous year’s attendance. Fine Point Judging however was the exception, as they had seventeen Model A’s entered, which is as full as I can recall over the past few years. I guess these guys and gals had an extra year to get the final tweaks into these fabulous examples of the highest quality representation of our beloved A’s. Touring class had respectable numbers in attendance post pandemic, with 32 entries, and the Fashion Judging had four participants. The Welcome Party was held on Tuesday evening this year, during which time the MARC office presented their awards ceremony for Literary Awards, and Newsletter Awards. During the newsletter awards, the presenter Bill Aupperle, announced that the newsletter awards competition consisted of 74 regional entries, of which 14 regions receiver awards and recognition for their various contributions. We will resume meetings at this location when approved by Trinity Lutheran Church In late May , Gary Mertz came over to my house to guide me in installing a font door window channel kit for my 1930 Tudor. I purchased the kit from Mac’s in Lockport, N.Y. The old window channel material came out easily. It had been in the car for a long time. I don’t believe it was original. Installing the new material, we needed to make a few modifications to the side channels to fit in the door. It’s nice to drive the car without the front windows rattling. (Neil Clavers) 8
