GOSPEL MEDITATION GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE It’s all so ordinary that we can easily miss it. The seagulls hunting and diving for mollusks at the beach offer a display of determination and precision as they gather their food for the day. It’s simply what these creatures do. Yet, there’s a magical artfulness and skill to their work that speaks vol- umes about the One who breathed life into their being. This is pretty much the way it is with God’s presence. God comes in common ways through common things and ordinary people. Sadly, we are so engulfed in our little worlds of order and ideas to notice the beauty and wonder of it all. Many have numbed themselves to the Divine spark at the essence of all life because that’s just the way it is. What’s so special about it? A sunset is a sunset and a seagull is a seagull. That’s precisely what they thought about Jesus too. After all, isn’t he just the carpenter’s son? What merit can his words possibly have? If we’re looking for God to come in an event that is so dramatic and intense that it knocks our socks off, then think again. When pondering God’s relationship with His people and God’s action in our lives, we have to go back to the stable and the recurring, creative, unending power of God’s pres- ence. It was a quiet, run of the mill kind of night. There was nothing spectacular or extraordinary. To the naked eye, a woman gave birth to a child and there wasn’t anything extraordinary to see. We have a hard time understanding God’s ordinary-ness. Jesus grew up in an ordinary town, had neigh- bors and did normal human things. Perhaps that’s why we don’t always like the Gospel. It doesn’t dazzle us with extraordinary things but simply challenges us to take a different look at our ordinary stuff. That makes us uncomfortable. We prefer things as they are. Our lack of faith can even cause us to take offense at what Jesus says and does, dismissing it as folly. God’s life-giving presence continues to sustain that seagull in flight and keep all things in being re- gardless of whether we have the faith to see and understand this. Our personal agendas, precon- ceived ideas, misconceptions, and expectations can often cause us to be hardened and blinded to what God is doing or desiring to do. While God continues to do what he has done for all eternity, faith is needed for God’s presence to bear fruit. The blinders we wear and the expectations we bring to life can often prevent us from seeing graced moments that radiate with God’s graceful presence. They also prevent God’s transforming, healing, and hope filled vision for our world from being real- ized. Without faith, God won’t be able to do much for us either. ©LPi
©LPi
HELP NEEDED The 10:00 am choir is requesting the generosity of an accom- panist. If someone plays piano and/or guitar and would like to play for the Lord, please come forward. It will be for only one Mass and a few hours for practice with the best cantors of the 10:00 am Mass. Please get in contact with Barbara Stadelman 503-679-4220; Theresa Verboort 503-648-6180 or Fr. Agustin Rodriguez, MSpS: arodriguez@stmatthewhillsboro.org Administrative Council Members Needed The Administrative Council is a group of parishioners known for their human and spiritual maturity and love of Christ and the Church, endowed with special competence in financial matters and of prudent judgment, who offer their time and talent as a service in the development and management of the parish's financial resources, so that our parish may effectively pursue its mission. Canon Law requires that every parish have an Ad- ministrative Council to assist the pastor in the administration of the goods of the parish. St. Matthew is looking for two parishioners to serve our parish family as members of the Administrative Council for a three- year period. The estimated time commitment is about five hours per month. If you have experience in the areas of business, management, accounting, law, or building maintenance, are an active parish- ioner, and would like to express your call to be a disciple by participating in this position of Christian leadership, please con- sider applying to serve on the Administrative Council. Office Closed If you would like more information about the Administrative Council, would like to read a copy of its Guidelines or would like to sit down and talk about it with me or a member of the July 5th, 2021 Administrative Council, please contact me. Until next time, please know that your parish & school staff are good stewards of the money that you contribute, & we are thankful for all that you give & do for St. Matthew! -Becky Smith, CPA, Business Manager
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL HERTEL CENTER Together with Christ we serve those in need News from St. Vincent de Paul Thanks to all who have donated food and money! Truly our parish and community listen and act in Jesus to care for the poor. Our food center is as busy as ever. Here are the stats for services in May 2021 through our center: Families served - 343 (includes 1,435 individuals) Homeless lunches - 447 Open Door lunches - 90 Goodwill vouchers issued for clothing - 21 -- $440 Goodwill vouchers redeemed - 16 - $405.57 In addition to the services at our food center at the Hertel Center, we help financially many with $300 toward rent or utility bills. A family/individual can have assistance up to 2 times a calendar year. This past May we helped 57 families (169 people total) with rental assistance ($17,100.00). We assisted 24 families (88 people total) with their utility bills ($4899.81). Metro recently awarded us a grant for $1000, Thank you Metro! On-going Needs Volunteers are welcome. We have a real need at this time for drivers to pick up donations and we need volunteers in the center who are Spanish speakers. In addition to needing people to volunteer their time, we are always in need of cash to purchase non food items such as hygiene products, laun- dry detergent and to keep our rent and utility assistance up and running. Blessed Conchita w rote to her oldest son before his w edding: “Let the poor be considered one of your ordinary expenses, and God will not fail you.” You can write checks to St. Vincent de Paul and put in the Sunday collection, bring a check by the Hertel Center or make payments on line on the parish website, maybe setting up an automatic mont- ly withdrawal. Our parish has always been generous in helping the poor of our community. We thank you so very much and know that many of you have had financial challenges during this time of the pandemic. As a community grounded in the Gospel, we know our needs will be met through Jesus working in each of us. We know God will not fail us.
