RIGHTS – LEARNING – TRAINING 5-10 JULY 2019 Roma EuroGames 2019 committee wants to make Roma EuroGames a great event of Sport, Culture and Human Rights. From the 5th of July to the 10th of July, before the opening Ceremony of July 11th, a full week of events will take place in Rome: 2 Conferences, 5 workshops, 4 open debates, 2 open days, 3 guided tours, 2 theater shows. We believe sport can change LGBTI people’s lives, and we also believe that sport can change society and tackle all kinds of discrimination. Roma EuroGames Week is a strong interactive cultural week with a multitarget and intersectional approach. With activists and international experts we will focus on the main challenges involving LGBTI people in sports as well as in life: Transgender and Intersex participation, racism and double discriminations, sexism and gender equality. The several events and contributions will not be focused just on sport, but will aim to better describe the relevant topics and perspectives: athletes, activists, artists, psychologists, lawyers and researchers are going to share competences and address the general public as well. Participants are expected to give active contributions, to intervene and to learn about the topics. An open resources archive with videos and materials will be available on the website at the following link in order to be a contribution for further steps and next EuroGames editions. Fighting LGBTI discrimination in sports encouraged the creation of safe and inclusive environments like the EuroGames. Thanks to this effort, we can now foster our commitment for a change in mainstream sport and shed light on the strong connections between sport, identity and sexuality. Sport (and LGBTI sport as well) has a tremendous potential as a tool for social change, as it creates educational strategies while tackling hate speech, discrimination and marginalization. In order to do that, topics such as homo-bi-transhopia, gender stereotypes and other discriminations should be considered as a threat for everyone’s freedom, not just for the people who are directly involved. Workshops Workshop – Gender stereotypes, homo-transphobia and bias in media – interactive working group activity. Date - July 6 Partner - Gaynet (Journalist association for LGBTI and media) Place - WEGIL - Largo Ascianghi 5 (Trastevere) Time – 14:30-17.30 The illustration on the Pioneer plaque, a probe launched by Nasa in the 70’s representing the human race (Photo: Wikipedia) Mainstream media have a hard impact in our way of seeing roles between men and women as well as between straight and gay, bisexual, intersex and transgender people. Ads, TV shows and films portray people with noticeable characteristics based upon stereotypes which reinforce our convictions about what a male or female should be. So we can end up having bias on gender roles and sexual orientations even if we think we have an inclusive approach. Language itself can reinforce the bias, enhancing bad habits that are hard to die. With an expert in media and language bias, this workshop will carry out a critical analysis of certain communication contents in order to elaborate tools and methodologies to identify the impact of stereotypes and prejudices on our behaviours and reduce them. The workshop is particularly recommended for coaches, teachers and PE teachers. GAYCS LGBT ASSOCIAZIONE PROMOZIONE SOCIALE - C. Speaker: Alessandro Paesano - Expert and Trainer in media and communication Workshop – Transgender and Intersex people in sport Experts workshop/seminar on “I” and “T” inclusion in sport Date – July 7 Partner – Roma EuroGames – IT Inclusion group Place – Via Francesco Negri 67-69 (UAAR Office – Metro B Piramide/Garbatella) Time – 10:30 -14.30 There is a great debate about transgender athletes and no consolidate practices are available especially in amateur sport. In 2015 alone, the International Olympic Committee issued the new guidelines concerning transgender athletes, in order to allow them to choose their elective competition gender regardless of sex reassignment. Those who transit from female to male gender are allowed to compete in the male category without restrictions. Those who transit from male to female gender can participate in the female category declaring they will not change their declared identity for the next 4 years and showing that in the 12 months prior the first competition they maintained a certain level of testosterone (lower at 10 nmol / L). These guidelines are just the first solution to a deep and complex issue which requires the consideration of safety for all athletes, differences among sports, differences between facts and cultural heritage. With the help of activists and transgender athletes, this workshop will focus on case histories and personal experiences from grassroots sport to professional levels. (Picture: Caster Semenya has been considered an hyper androgynous athlete (or DSD – disorder in sex development) and in other cases an intersex person. She is well known for the controversy against IAAF for “differences of sex development” rules. On July 3th 2019, the Supreme Court of Switzerland suspended the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which had decided (last May) that she would had to accept the new IAAF regulations and be forced to reduce testosterone levels. Date – July 9 Partner – Assist (Italian association of female athletes) Place – AICS national office – Via Barberini 68 (Repubblica – Metro A) Time – 09:30 – 13:30 Sport is traditionally a male-dominated sector and progress in gender equality in this area is hindered by the social constructions of femininity and masculinity, which often associate sport with ‘masculine’ characteristics, such as physical strength and resilience, speed, and a highly competitive spirit (Picture: The Italian national women football team during the GAYCS LGBT ASSOCIAZIONE PROMOZIONE SOCIALE - C. 2019 FIFA World women Championship. Photo: ANSA) Women who engage in sports may be perceived as ‘masculine’, while men who are not interested in sports could be considered ‘unmanly’. Coaching is another area of sports where women are largely underrepresented. Based on figures from seven EU Member States, it is estimated that only 20% to 30% of all sports coaches in Europe are women. There are also more men than women employed in sports, and data from EIGE’s Gender Statistics Database (European Institute for Gender Equality) shows that at European level, from 2012 to 2014, women’s employment in sports actually decreased, whereas men’s increased. Concerning Italy, Italian law still does not acknowledge professional female athletes. This workshop aims to focus on a historical analysis of the rise of female sport in Europe and to investigate possible cooperation between activists, athletes and sports organizations in Europe to tackle sexism in sport, encourage women participation and foster gender inclusive sport environments. GLO tells about stories: all the same, all different from one another. It brings you inside a kaleidoscope where colourful images swirl to turn acts into emotions. It tells about people who love and desire one another. Women, men, transgender people who chose themselves and their own truth. The postmodern beat meets the cha cha, goes through the ‘80s, slides on electronic notes as classical score, and drags the LGBTQIA+ world on the scene with all its shades: a world made of eccentricity, courage, boredom, freedom, makeup, transgression, tenderness, deep love, but also fear, madness and dark places to hide. “So the thumpa-thumpa continues.
