Lent is a 40-day season beginning on Ash Wednesday and con- cluding at sundown on Holy Thursday. Lent is a time to par- ticipate in self-examination, fasting and penance in preparation for our Easter observance. We prepare to renew our baptism - when we rose into our new Christian life - as we celebrate Christ rising from the dead. It is a time of prayer, forgiveness and grace. HOW DO I OBSERVE LENT? 1. P SV Shrove Tuesday R Pancake Supper Tuesday, February 16, 2021 Sponsored by the JGS Men’s Club CURB-SIDE Plans are underway to have a Curb-side Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 16th, sponsored by the JGS Men’s Club. To make this happen we need a commitment of 100 orders by Friday, February 12 5:00 p.m. Look for updates via flocknote or the website to see if the Men’s Club received enough orders to proceed with the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Why is it called SHROVE TUESDAY? Shrove Tuesday got its name from the reconciliation sought before Lent (to shrive) that is, to hear confession, assign penance and give absolution. One of several names given to Shrove Tuesday was Pancake Day—in order to use up eggs, milk and lard before Lent, with its strict conditions for fasting. Another name which was given to Shrove Tuesday was the name we are probably most familiar with: Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras (imported to New Orleans from France). This day also became known as “Carnival” (from the Italian, “carne-vale = farewell to meat). Shrove Tuesday then became a celebration and feast on rich foods and pastries in anticipation of the rigors of Lent—simply in order to use up such foods that were not even allowed to be kept in the house during the Lenten fast. “We will all be changed.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:51 5
February 17, 2021 Mass times 6:30 a.m. 12:00 noon 7:00 p.m. Click here to sign up for Mass Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Following the example of the Ninevites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and remind us that life passes away on Earth. Ashes are a symbol of penance made a sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice (Catholic.org). RECEIVING ASHES There are two ways to receive ashes this year: 1.) In-person during Mass, socially distanced. 2.) Ashes for distribution at home. In an effort to connect the “domestic church” to the parish, ashes will be offered through the church office in advance of Ash Wednesday. Please contact the office at secretary@ccjgs.org or call 410-257-3810. “We will all be changed.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:51 6

The links are below. Paper copies of the Stations will be made available so parishioners can follow along at home. JOIN US IN THE JOURNEY! The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every church. ~USCCB “We will all be changed.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:51 8
