COMPASSION – AROHA A gift of love and compassion Pope Francis in an interview with the Italian daily newspaper, ‘La Repubblica’ spoke about the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘We need to rediscover the concreteness of small things, the small acts of kindness shown to those who are close to us, family and friends. We need to realise that our treasure lies in small things. These are tiny gestures that sometimes get lost in the routine of everyday life, gestures of tenderness, affection, compassion, that are nevertheless decisive, important.’ Pope Francis gives examples of sharing ‘a hot plate of food, a caress, a hug, a phone call. …. These are familiar, attentive gestures regarding everyday details that make life meaningful, and create communion and communication amongst us. …. We should discover a new closeness. Real relationships made of attentiveness and patience. …. Listening to one another is important because we understand one another’s needs, struggles and desires. …. There is a language made of concrete gestures that must be safeguarded. The suffering people are enduring at this time should make us open to this language.’ (Pope Francis 18 March 2020) Learn from Mary MacKillop to be a gift of love and compassion for one another.’ (Pope John Paul II 19 January 1995) Back to School Welcome back to yet another near normal for our whanau. ROOM 1 My Dad! By By By Reese David Anareia Back to story reading and Education outside the Classroom. Reading Recovery Jolly Rodger and the Spyglass – By Chris We read the story about Jolly Rodger and his spyglass. It was a great story. Jolly Roger has had his big ship and his treasure taken away by the bad pirates, but luckily they did not take his spy glass. Once he was on the little boat they left him. He sees some big rocks up ahead with the spy glass. He helped the pirates not to crash into the big rocks. The pirates were happy that Jolly Rodger saved them. The spyglass was the best treasure for Jolly Rodger! The End
Room 6 Assessment time. Room 6 stories. My setting is at my friend’s house. The time is 12.00. Characters are Zhar’day and Tanya. One day I went to Tanya’s house and we played in her room. And then we went to the mall. We got some toys. And when we got back to Tanya’s house we got the toys and we played. By Zhar’day. I am grateful for my little brother. I love my baby brother because he is so cute and he makes funny noises. I like to take care of him because he is my little brother. By Lucas. Being a Leader. My setting is at Auckland University. The time is 12.00am. The weather is windy. My characters are me and all the other Catholic teachers that teach in Auckland. The problem is that teachers want their classes to step up with being a leader. Today I am going to the Auckland University to talk about being a leader. It is really windy so I have to stay warm and wear my jacket. It’s 11.40 and my speech begins at 12.00 o-clock. My dream is to become New Zealand’s Prime Minister or work in the parliament when I grow up. I am going to be talking to all the Catholic teachers in Auckland. It is 12.00 o-clock and it is time to put on the big show. “Being a leader means not letting people down and not talking over others. Also, always respect your elders.” Obviously treat others the way you want to be treated. You always have to step up for yourself. You don’t let other people step up for you. You step up for yourself. That’s how you can be a leader and that’s the end of my speech. And thank you for having me. Now that I’ve done my speech I’m going to get some food. The end. By Yuki St Joseph’s School is a trail blazer! St Mary MacKillop Feast Day Virtual Liturgy As part of our school celebration of the feast day of St. Mary Mackillop, on 8th August, Mr Brendan Bergin, the RE Adviser from Catholic Schools Office and Mrs Victor organised a Zoom Liturgy. We were referred to as the ´trailblazer´ because we were the first school in Auckland to have a zoom liturgy due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was a blessing to celebrate this Feast day since St. Mary Mackillop was the founder of my school. As I read the Word of God, it was a feeling of pride to represent my school at this ‘trail blazer’ liturgy. This is a first opportunity and I look forward to showcasing my school on a wider platform. Room 5 Taekwondo I was nervous and excited about taekwondo lessons as I didn’t know what to expect. It was such a challenging workout. I felt different after doing the lesson because every move meant I had to try hard and I had to keep moving fast. Doing the exercise called - dying fishing was really difficult for me and for other students as well. Why? You had to lie down in your belly and put your hand and feet up and down five times. What I was proud of was having a go, trying my best, doing all the movement and supporting my pears. I enjoyed learning new skills, listening and having fun which makes me happy. By Luseane FIAFIA Cancelled Unfortunately due to Covid-19 we have had to cancel our Fiafia fundraiser this year. We are all very disappointed as this was one way that we all came together with different cultures as one family. BASKETBALL UPDATE Due to the current situation all basketball games have been cancelled until further notice. As soon as we get any information regarding the competition we will let everyone know. NEW STUDENT Welcome to our new student in Room 9 to our school community: Violet-Rose Schaumkel. AFTER SCHOOL CARE After school care is available and will be in the Library, Room 8 every day from 3.15 – 5.15pm Monday to Friday, $6.00 per session. There is a discount for more than 1 child. COVID UPDATE – HYGIENE Thank you to all our families who have been vigilant and safety conscious with keeping their whanau safe and well. In many of the letters sent out to our whanau there has been health advice for everyone. We must make sure that these are adhered to strongly. Personal hygiene is of utmost important more now than ever before. Cleanliness is very central to keeping ourselves safe and we must constantly be washing our hands, keeping our clothes clean, coughing into our elbows, when we blow our noses throw the tissue away into the bin, be aware of keeping a safe distance from each other, (especially outside of the school) and follow any directions from the Ministry of Health.
