Exploring coloured rice To extend from our interest in colours, Miss Taylah decided to bring our valentines day fun in with our learning about colours, and what a great way of doing this with coloured rice, to allow the children to get in tough with their senses. One side of the tray was filled with bright red rice and the other filled with a soft pink. Miss Taylah added in some soft pink heart cookie cutters for the children to explore the rice with. We gathered to mat and sat around the tray in a circle and waited patiently for Miss Taylah, once it was ready Mikayla and Harvey dug straight into the rice, grabbing handfuls at a time. Nathaniel and Archie grabbed a hold of one of the cookie cutters at first and started to stamp the cookie cutter through the rice. Ethan happily sat besides Miss Maddy and observed the sensory tray as he was a little unsure at first, it didn’t take him to long to feel comfortable within the group, he reached out to feel the texture of the rice. Some of the rice made its way out of the tray, Mikayla looked at the mess on the mat and said “Oh no, rice”, Miss Taylah replied “That's okay, how about we use our cookie cutters and fill them with rice on the mat?” This excited Mikayla as she watched on what Miss Taylah was doing, once she had fill up the cookie cutter up she tapped on Miss Taylah's legs and pointed to hers “Look Taylah, look” she goes. Nathaniel also filled a cookie cutter up with the coloured rice, he was very proud of his actions. Archie was a little more interested in the different shaped cookie cutters, getting up closely and looking through the different sizes. Throughout this sensory experience, Miss Taylah talked about the two different coloured rice that were in the tray, pink and red for valentines day. Mikayla and Nathaniel continued to point out the difference between the two throughout their time exploring the rice. They are slowly learning and recognizing their colours. Written by Miss Taylah
Spontaneous outdoor play After our fun morning inside exploring the rice tray, we headed outside for a quick play before settling down for some lunch. Outside we had lots of different arounds to explore. Each of the children went off independently to explore at their own pace. Mikayla seemed to really enjoy the outside home corner, she grabbed plates of food and brought them over to Miss Maddy for her “Lunch” as Mikayla had stated. Archie also explored the home corner box, rushing through all of the utensils, fruits and vegetables before settling for a plate and the Velcro kiwi fruits. Harvey found the table set up with paper and crayons, he happily drew squiggles on his paper before running over to the red car frame to spin the steering wheel. Ethan sat beside Miss Taylah and enjoyed listening to her read through the Alice in wonderland book, he pointed to each of the different characters on the pages that caught his attention. Nathaniel raced around the turtle obstacle as fast as he could before running up the stairs and jumping onto his bottom down the slide. Written by Miss Taylah
