PRAYER OF CONFESSION
  Merciful God,
  We have sinned
In what we have thought and said,
In the wrong we have done
And in the good we have not done.
  We have sinned in ignorance:
  We have sinned in weakness:
We have sinned through our own deliberate fault.
  We are truly sorry.
We repent and turn to you.
Forgive us, for our Savior Christ’s sake,
And renew our lives to the glory of your holy name.

                         Please continue to pray silently

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Patrick Hunnicutt

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and
in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy
Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he
rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to
judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the
resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

                                 THE WORD

ANTHEM Covenant Choir
Spirit of God, Unseen as the Wind
Traditional Scottish, arr. David Iliff (b.1939); Text by Margaret Old (1932–2001)

Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove:
Teach us the truth and help us believe, show us the Saviour’s love!
You spoke to us – long, long ago – gave us the written word:
We read it still, needing its truth, through it God’s voice is heard.
Spirit of God, unseen as the wind, gentle as is the dove:
Teach us the truth and help us believe, show us the Saviour’s love!
SCRIPTURE Matthew 4:12–23 New Testament, p. 3

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.
    People: Thanks be to God.

                     RESPONSE TO THE WORD

PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil; for Thine is
the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

                        Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958)

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
Such a Way, as gives us breath: Such a Joy, as none can move:
Such a Truth, as ends all strife: Such a Love, as none can part:
Such a Life, as killeth death. Such a Heart, as joys in love.

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:
Such a Light, as shows a feast:
Such a Feast, as mends in length:
Such a Strength, as makes his guest.

The green paraments today mark the season of Ordinary Time. Green
symbolizes nature, life and the growth of Christian discipleship. The
paraments (the cloths that hang from the pulpit and communion table) are
changed with the liturgical calendar, marking the seasons we observe throughout
the year.

Sermon recordings are available at wpc-alex.org/sermon-podcasts.

Childcare for infants and preschoolers is provided during the service in the
preschool wing on the 2nd floor. If you need to leave the Sanctuary during

Candlemas: A Choral Evensong for Winter
Sunday, February 9 | 6PM in the Sanctuary
Candlemas, or the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, happens at the
midpoint of winter. On this day, children and adult musicians of Westminster will
present a service of Choral Evensong celebrating the gifts of warmth, love, and light in
the midst of the cold of winter. Candlelight will illumine our sanctuary as we sing to
honor the Light of World, Jesus Christ.
Annual Meeting of the Congregation and Corporation | Sunday, February 2

MISSION & SERVICE
Carpenter’s Shelter Monthly Dinner Volunteer Needed
The Local Mission committee is looking for a volunteer to join the Westminster
Carpenter’s Shelter dinner team by ordering prepared chicken and delivering to the
shelter the first Monday of each month. Also involves some financial record-keeping.
The shelter requires volunteers be 18 or older. Contact localmission@wpc-alex.org.

Collect Your Change for Cents-Ability!
Collection Sundays 2020: February 23, May 17, August 2, November 15

Are you ready to collect some small change to make a big difference? Take a bank home
with you, put in a few cents at each meal for each member of your family, and then
bring it back to church on Cents-Ability Collection Sundays. In addition to supporting
the national Hunger Programs of the PC(USA), a portion of the money we raise will
support the annual Adopt-a-Turkey program run by the Local Mission Committee.

This is a wonderful opportunity, right around your dinner table, to have conversations
with friends and family about hunger and poverty. These are realities that affect so many
men, women, and children each day; sometimes in Kenya or Cameroon, sometimes just
down the block. As we give thanks for our daily bread, please continue to support this
program, which in turn supports so many others in our community, nation, and world.
CHRISTIAN FORMATION

Fifth Annual Dessert & Dialogue
Sunday, March 15 | 7PM in Fellowship Hall
With Dr. Peter Enns, author of How the Bible Actually Works
A humorous, energetic speaker and writer, Dr. Enns prompts us to see the Bible as an
exercise in wisdom. He’s sarcastic, thoughtful, well-educated, and intentional about
pursuing tough questions regarding faith with a little snark. Dr. Enns has a PhD in
biblical studies and a long career of research, teaching, speaking and writing to back up
his ideas. All are invited to read his book and come hear him speak and answer your
questions at the Dessert & Dialogue (non-book readers welcome, of course!).

Common Threads of Shared Humanity: Living the Gospel
Today & February 9, 16 & 23 | Biblical Fracking: Midrash for the Modern
Christian with Rev. Frank Wade | The ancient Jewish practice of ‘midrash’ (to
enquire, to seek) is a unique way to explore the common threads of the humanity we
share with our biblical ancestors. Christianity has not fully claimed the harvest midrash
provides. Most of us have never met, much less learned from, the wives of Moses and
Peter, Paul’s sister, Jesus’ brothers or the man behind the dark story of Judas. This forum
series will talk of the practice of midrash and its access to some of the people found on
the Bible’s edges.
Sunday, February 2 | Kairos Prison Ministry with WPC member Curt Powell
Curt and and his team will be speaking on the Kairos Prison Ministry he chairs for
Sussex I State Prison. The session will include an overview of the program, how we at
WPC can help, open discussion and powerful testimony from a former inmate whose
life was turned around by finding Christ through Kairos. “I was in prison and you
came to visit me.” (Matthew 25:35–36)

The Thursday Morning Study Group Returns! We will be delving into the nooks
and crannies of the Bible so see what lessons we can glean. The book “Biblical Fracking”
by Frank Wade will be our guide as we search for hidden lessons in the biblical stories.
The class will meet on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30AM in Haverkamp
Room, February 27–April 9. Contact Art Sauer with questions.
CHILDREN & FAMILIES (Nursery–5th Grade) wpc-alex.org/families
Contact Patty Chamberlain, Director.

Whole Family Creation Station (Grades K-5 & Families) | Sunday, February 2 at
9:45 AM on the 3rd Floor | Children and their families are invited to join us to learn
about this month’s Bible story through art, drama, games and storytelling. Parents,
grandparents, caregivers, and siblings of any age welcome.
