Celebrating 153 Years 1868 - 2021 429 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31401 Telephone: 912-232-0191 Fax: 912-236-4247 Website: www.wesleymonumental.org January 31, 2021 More of the Same..... Some of you may remember the old comic strip "Calvin and Hobbs." When "Calvin and Hobbs" and "The Far Side" both went away, I quit reading the comics. I remember a line from a New Year's "Calvin and Hobbs" that said something along the lines of, "The problem with the future is it keeps becoming the present." We all entered 2021 with this great hope that 2020 was behind us and everything was soon to get better. But, one month into 2021, it sure seems a lot like 2020. "The future keeps becoming the present." The COVID-19 pandemic now stretches into 2021, and in reality, is worse than ever around here. This has recently become a first-hand reality for some of us on our staff. For that reason, we made the difficult decision this week to put a pause on our small group in-person meetings for a month in hopes the number of cases will come down. We are blessed to have a sanctuary that offers lots of space and a congregation that has been so good about wearing masks, so we feel we can continue to have morning worship in person. We are also blessed to have several people with real expertise and experience to help us think through what we are doing. It has been said that Israel offered the world the gift of hope. One of the blessings of walking in faith is the hope that comes along with it. Hope keeps us looking forward in spite of what is happening around us. It doesn't make us ignore the present reality, but it strengthens us to endure in it. Remember those words of Paul, "And now these three things remain, faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love." We are walking in faith, holding onto hope, and living in love as we try to love God and love our neighbor by being as safe as we can in worship, study, service, and fellowship.

ANNE,” BWV 552 Lighting of the Candles (11:00) The Acolytes Introit (11:00) Sanctus Lindsay Norden Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory; Glory be to Thee, O Lord most high. Amen. Opening Hymn JUDAS MACCABEUS “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:19 (KJV) Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory Thou o’er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded graveclothes where Thy body lay. Refrain: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory Thou o’er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb; Lovingly He greets thee, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for our Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting. Refrain 8:45 Skip Watts 11:00 Chamber Choir
* Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed Nelle Bordeaux I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. * Gloria Patri GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. 8:45 Skip Watts 11:00 Chamber Choir Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer Nelle Bordeaux Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory; For ever. Amen. Voluntary (8:45) Praise to the Lord, the Almighty arr. Mark Hayes Anthem (11:00) Hubert Parry I was glad when they said unto me, We will go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand in Thy gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is builded as a city that is at unity in itself. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and plenteousness within thy palaces. (Psalm 122) * Scripture John 1:43-51 Sermon “A Moment of Clarity Part 3: Ben Martin Overcoming Unconscious Bias” Closing Hymn JUDAS MACCABEUS No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life! Life is naught without Thee; aid us in our strife. Make us more than conquerors, through Thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above. Refrain 8:45 Skip Watts 11:00 Chamber Choir Closing Response (11:00) Peter Lutkin The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
