                      ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

DPS Kollam is nestled in the calm and pristine surroundings at Meeyannoor, 18 kms from the city of
Kollam, Kerala. It is a residential cum day-boarding school. It also offers day – care facility. The
school provides excellence in formal education from Pre School to Grade 8 in CBSE curriculum with
the correct balance of curricular and co-curricular activities.

We started our activities with Summer Camp named “Summer Explorer” on April 2019.There were
150 campers and all divided into 3 age groups. The various camp activities included Home Science,
Robotics, Art and craft, Gardening, Face painting, Instrumenalmusic, Dance, Rifle shooting, Squash,
Swimming, Clay modeling etc.

Our teacher training programmes started in the month of May. Next Education, TATA CLASS Edge
team conducted their trainings at DPS Kollam. A two day training programme by Ms. Aaradhana
Mahawat was full of fun filled activities.

Every month parent orientation programmes were conducted for all grades of DPS Kollam. It was
conducted with the aim to acquaint parents with DPS academic and co-curricular practices and also the
facilities provided at the school.

“Teachers are the greatest assets of the society. They have the ability to inspire, empower and foster an
environment of self-confidence, passion and nurture the lives of students.” Keeping this great thought
in mind, Delhi Public School, Kollam, organized an orientation programme for the teachers on 31 May
2019 and on 1 June 2019 at school. DPS Kollam faculty expressed gratitude to the resource persons,
Ms. Geetha and Ms.Nanda and assured them to put their whole hearted effort and dedication in
upholding the strategies for the coming academic year.

10 June 2019 will be marked as a milestone in the history of Delhi Public School Kollam, as a group of
90 children set their first step to the schooling phase of their lives with this esteemed institution. They
entered the school with much hope and aspiration to revive after a long and rejuvenating summer
break. Most of the kids came on the school bus and others with their parents. The school held a special
assembly in order to welcome the first batch of children to school. The new academic year began by
invoking the blessings of Almighty. Our Vice Principal Mrs. Edna Fernandez addressed the gathering
and motivated the students for a happy, prosperous and successful year ahead. She introduced the
group of teachers to the students. A special programme was organized by the teachers to welcome the
kids.

We celebrated International Yoga Day and Music Day with a variety of programmes on 21 June 2019.
Members from Isha Foundation, Coimbatore gave a speech on the importance of yoga in our daily
lives. Students and teachers also performed some „aasanas‟ along with them. It was an enriching
experience for the whole school.
The first Parent Interactive Session was held at DPS Kollam on 22 June 2019. It is an initiative to
involve parents in their child‟s learning. The first session was conducted by Ms. Sajitha Rasheed of
Mind Mojo. Parents were given a glimpse of how teachers collaborate and plan an inquiry. The
interactive session was attended by the parents of 68 students. The parents were made to write a few
lines in retrospect about their own childhood and the kind of parenting they got in their childhood.

The Literary Club of DPS Kollam had organized various activities to celebrate P N Panicker‟s
anniversary which is celebrated as „Reading Day‟. It was observed on 21 June 2019. All the students
were given opportunity to visit the library and read a book of their interest and write a book review of
what they read. Poster making competition on „The Importance of Reading‟ was conducted for the
students of grade I to VI. The KG section inaugurated the reading zone. This was done by Ms.Edna
Fernandez. Story narration was also a part of reading day activity for the kindergarteners.

The purpose of Student Council is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership by organizing
and carrying out school activities and service projects. Student Council is the voice of the student body.
Since the students are new to the DPS family and most of them were not aware of the rules and
functioning of student council, our vice Principal Ms. Edna Fernandez introduced various duties that a
council member needs to carry out.
Student Council – Selection Procedure
1. After getting consent from the parents, children filed a nomination.
2. Interview session was conducted by a panel of four teachers.
3. One minute speech at assembly.
4. Online voting for the candidates.
5. Declaration of the result.
Children were so excited about the posts and nomination was given in discussion with their parents, on
21 June 2019. On the same day, the first round of procedure took place by filling up the form given to
the nominees. 18 students (9 students of Grade VI and 9 students of Grade VI) submitted the form with
enthusiasm. The Second round was planned on 24 June 2019. The Vice Principal, Ms.Edna Fernandez,
School, Student Counsellor Ms. Rajalakshmi and the section coordinators Ms. Beena and Ms.Srija
were present in the panel. The elimination process was conducted based on their performance on the
same day. In the Third Round, the selected candidates were given a chance to speak for a minute
during assembly on 25 June 2019 asking for votes and why they should be voted. The selection
procedure‟s last and fourth round was with an online voting in the computer lab which happened on the
same day after assembly. 23 teachers and 23 students took part in the voting. The result was announced
in the evening in the presence of all the students, present in the auditorium. The results were as follows:

Father‟s day was observed on 23June 2019.The students of Grades I to VI expressed their love for their
fathers by imprinting their thumb impression on a pebble with a quote that read „My Daddy Rocks‟.
The children presented this token of love to their fathers to be used as a paper weight in their work
space. This activity, proved to be memorable for both the father and the child. DPS, Kollam‟s fleet is
equipped with transport tracking system. This system generates automatic mobile updates about the
child‟s presence in the bus and the position of the bus. This facility is available for students of KG to
grade VI. The buses are equipped with cameras, speed governors, GPS tracking, experienced drivers,
caretakers, first aid kit and fire extinguishers.

 The Investiture Ceremony is a solemn occasion wherein the students take on the mantle of leadership
 and responsibility while carrying it out with utmost dedication. 13 July 2019 will be etched in the
 history of Delhi Public School, Kollam, as its first Student Council was invested on that day. It was a
 proud moment for all the parents to witness their children being invested with great responsibilities
 while embarking on a new journey as leaders. On this momentous day, the DPS App was also
 launched.

 The 73 rd Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor by the staff
 and students of Delhi Public School, Kollam. The day began with a ceremonial march past by the
 four houses of the school, to the rhythm of the drum beats and to the tune of patriotic songs. Soon
 after this, the National Flag was hoisted by the Pro Vice Chairman of Delhi Public School, Kollam.
 The Head Girl, Rachel Maria Fernandez delivered an impressive speech focusing on patriotism and
 the spirit of “UNITY IN DIVERSITY”. The highlight of the day was „Honouring the families of the
 brave hearts‟ who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War. Five Valiant soldiers were honoured
 with mementos.

 The Kargil Vijay Divas was celebrated on Friday, 26 July 2019 in School Auditorium. A small video
 presentation was done by Ms. Aleena and Ms. Rakhee explaining the Kargil War and the
 significance of the day. This was to commemorate the martyrdom of the brave soldiers followed by a
 group song by the teachers.

 The students of Kindergarten (Pre-school, Nursery, Prep) visited the Varkala Aquarium on 8 August
 2019.The purpose of this field trip was to help the children learn about aquatic animals related to the
 theme study „Oceans‟. The students were fascinated by the colourful fish of different shapes and
 sizes on display there. They gathered information about the aquarium‟s special features like the glass
 vision of sea world and an underwater sea walk. The aquarium comprises two sections - sea water
 section and tropical fish section. The sea water section has turtles, sea horses, yellow frogs, etc.
 whereas the tropical section has fishes like angel fish, sword tail fish, red dragon, flower horn fish
 and the state fish “Karimeen.” They even had the opportunity to enjoy the serene beauty of Varkala
 beach on the way back home.

 The oceans were introduced to the Kindergarteners as part of their theme study which helps them
 know about the major oceans on the Earth, ocean animals and the different layers of the oceans. The
 activities conducted under the theme were - Scientific exploration activity on layers of oceans,
 sensory bin activity and anchor chart presentation on ocean animals and parts of fish.
As part of the Social Service Club activities, the students of Grade IV visited the old age home at
Karunalayam, Chathanoor on 8 August 2019.They mingled with the inmates and cheered them up by
talking to them about the school and promising them that this would continue as a regular activity.
The children gifted a box of oats and bathing soap to the old age home. The students were taken by
Ms.Lekha and Sr.Sangeetha.

The students of Grade 1 to 6 celebrated friendship by watching the film “Home” in the school
auditorium with special friendship movie tickets prepared at school. The teachers too joined in the
fun and entertainment. The student council visited the orphanage Balikasadanam in Kottiyam. The
welcome song by the children of the orphanage endeared our students to them and they too sang
songs for them .This was followed by tying of friendship bands made by students of DPS Kollam,
along with gifting beautiful card .The Head Boy Bharath and Head Girl Rachel presented small
mementos as a token of love and affection as well. Seasons come and seasons go but the flowers of
friendship will bloom forever at DPS Kollam. The well spent Friendship Day 2019 ended with
lessons and bond to last a lifetime.

National Sports day was celebrated at DPS Kollam on 29 August 2019.The day started with a
presentation on the greatest hockey player Major Dhyanchand in the school auditorium. After this
there was a talk about the Arjuna awardees who had distinguished themselves in different fields of
sport. The students and staff then watched the live telecast from Delhi. Honourable Minister of youth
affairs and sports spoke about the importance of „Keeping fit‟ for which sports is essential. The
students enjoyed our Prime Minister‟s speech on „Fit India‟. In the end the students had a few sports
competitions which were enjoyed by one and all.

The eye check-up for the students and teachers was conducted from 19 July to 24 July 2019. The
camp was organised in collaboration with Azeezia Medical College, Meeyanoor. Students from all
the grades took active participation in the programme.

The dental check-up for the students was conducted on 19 August 2019. The camp was organised in
collaboration with Azeezia Medical College, Meeyanoor. Students from all the grades actively
participated in the programme.

A flower arrangement competition was held in DPS Kollam on Friday 9 August 19.Competitions
were held among the four houses Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald and Topaz. The Emerald house bagged
the first prize. The second prize was taken away by Sapphire house and Topaz stood the third.

The tiny tots of Kindergarten celebrated different colour days-green, orange, purple, black and brown
with great zeal and enthusiasm in different weeks of July and August. The children learnt to identify
different vegetables and fruits of these colours. They also participated in different activities like
Show and Tell and Colouring and Finger printing. In the process they learnt to recognize these
colours.
Doctor‟s Day was celebrated on 2 July 2019 in the school auditorium. On that day Dr.Abida Hashim
  spoke to the students about general hygiene and keeping our surroundings clean to prevent ourselves
  from ailments.

       HANDLING SCHOOL SOFTWARE TRAINING FOR TEACHERS
  On 22 July a training session for teachers was held by Mr. Ramamoorthy on 22 July. He trained
  teachers on how to use the school software.
       SCHOOL CINEMA
  As part of value based education activities, a school cinema demonstration was conducted
  on Thursday 1 August 2019.The demonstration class was attended by Ms. Suja,
  Ms. Anu, Ms. Beena, Ms. Srija, Ms. Rema and Sr. Sangeetha.
       WORKSHOP BY Ms. SHERIN
  A workshop for teachers was conducted by Ms. Sherin Mathew on Saturday, 3August 2019
  emphasising on adopting innovative methods of Teaching.
Delhi Public School, Kollam celebrated Teachers Day on 6 September 2019 with great gusto and
gaiety.The children performed a scintillating cultural show to denote love, respect and recognition of
the hard work put in by the teachers towards their development. The cultural show incorporated poems,
songs, dance and skit.

Onam is a time to show off our rich cultural heritage. All Keralites celebrate this festival with much
vigor. The DPS, Kollam Onam Celebrations were held on 5 September 2019 amidst great cheer and
cultural extravaganza. It witnessed a mass participation of parents, teachers and students. The
inauguration was held at the school auditorium and was presided over by the Chairman, Directors and
Vice-Principal. The competitions showcased the talents of the parents of DPS, who competed for the
most cherished prizes. The parents were divided into two teams and participated in various
competitions like pookkalam and thiruvathira. The highlight of the celebration was the „pulikali team‟
which entered the auditorium to join the celebrations. The programme came to an end by a massive
Onasadhya.

The First Term exam for Grades V and VI was conducted from 22 September to 4 October. The
students were marked on 60 for a test of 2 hours. 24 students appeared for the examination.

 The 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated on 1 October. The day was
 celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. The celebration started with a bhajan the choir group,
 followed by a presentation and quiz on Gandhi. A short message was given to the students regarding
 unity and brotherhood. There were various activities held like bulletin board presentation, cloth bag
 making etc.

 The students observed the World Postal Day on 9 October 2019. As part of this the students from
 GradeI to VI were taken to the Kollam, Post Office. There the students were explained about the
 significance of the services of the Department of Posts. A field trip was conducted for the students of
 Grade I to VI to the Milma Diary on 9 October 2019. Students were shown and explained the
 different processing activities there.
The world celebrates Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam‟s birth anniversary as Student‟s Day on 15 October. To
mark the birth anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. AbdulKalam, who wished to be remembered as a teacher, the
students of DPS Kollam celebrated World Student‟s Day by donating books and stationery to the
inmates of Jawahariya Orphanage, Paripally.

 The World Food Day was observed on Wednesday 16 October 2019 .The student council members
 along with Sr.Sangeetha and Ms. Rakhee visited Jawahariya Orphanage for girls at Paripally on this
 day. The students watched a documentary on the importance of not wasting food and pledged to
 avoid wasting food.

 The Parent Interactive Session from Pre-School to Grade VI was held on Saturday, 19 October 2019
 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Answer sheets of the First Term exam were given and discussed with the
 parents of Grades V and VI. Remedial classes were suggested by the teachers for the students who
 require extra help.

 A rifle shooting competition was held at DPS, Kollam on Saturday, 26 October 2019. Dr. Hassan, the
 director of the school inaugurated the ceremony. The students of various schools participated in the
 shooting competition. More than 33 shooters took part in the competition. The competition
 comprised two sessions-Open Eye Sight and Peep Sight. The first place in Peep Sight was bagged by
 Fancia, the second and third positions were secured by Vinayak and Adithya respectively. In the
 Open Sight Gautham bagged the first position, Martin Chacko Sabu won the second position and
 Albin stood third. All the winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates. The other
 participants were awarded certificates. The programme turned out to be a memorable event in the
 history of DPS, Kollam.

A Cancer Awareness class for the staff of DPS Kollam was conducted on Monday 28 October 2019.
The session was conducted by Dr. Leena, Oncologist of Azeezia Medical College, Kollam.

A fire and rescue awareness class was conducted for the students and faculty of DPS Kollam, on 29
October 2019 in association with Fire and Safety Department of Kollam. The class was taken by
Assistant Station Officer Mr. Sasidharan and his team. Students were introduced to different types of
fire extinguishers used for the rescue operation when a building is on fire.

Observing the great tradition and imbibing the true spirit of Keralites, we at DPS Kollam celebrated
Kerala Piravi on November 1 marking the birth of Kerala. The school witnessed a variety of
programmes depicting the love for Kerala culture and Malayalam. As part of „Kerala Piravi‟ an
exhibition was held in school by the Archeological Department. Various schools were invited to visit
the exhibition. The highlight of the exhibition was the stall put by the Aranmula Kannadi family.
Different dance forms of Kerala were also performed by the students in connection with the
celebration, providing a platform for the students to understand and respect their rich culture.
Kalaripaittu, the martial arts of Kerala was the centre of the attraction.
Every child is a different kind of flower and together they make this world a beautiful garden. The
school celebrated the Children‟s Day on November 14, 2019. Children came in colourful dresses. The
programme began with a prayer by the teachers. The teachers put up mesmerizing performances like
various dances and fashion show. Students cheered their teachers as they saw them on stage. The
campus was buzzing with excitement. The day ended with a beautiful resonance lingering in
everybody‟s mind.

A colourful fest was organized in our school on November 14 and 15. DPS Kollam celebrated their
cultural day with pomp and splendor. The event lasted the whole day and was held in the school
auditorium. Students had various competitions like western solo, Malayalam light music, western
dance and fancy dress. The children showcased their talents in dance and music.

DPS Kollam held its first inter house swimming competition on 21 November 2019.The four houses
competed in various events like Free Style, Backstroke and Relay. The winners were awarded with
certificates and medals. The school Vice Principal Ms. Edna Fernandez and academic mentor Ms.
Rema congratulated the students on their performance on the occasion.

A fun – filled adventure camp was organized by DPS Kollam on 23 November 2019. The campers of
grade I to VI were exposed to do variety of challenges and exciting activities which included Zip line,
Rope ladder climbing, Swinging Bridge, Commando Crawl etc. These activities helped them to
strengthen teamwork and to make personal accomplishments.

A field trip was conducted for the students of grade I to VI on 30 November 2019 to Kaveri Park,
Chathanoor. Children had the opportunity to see and understand birds of various species. A movie
“Frozen 2” was also added to the entertainment of the students.

As part of our Christmas celebration, the students of DPS, Kollam visited a special school named
Snehalaya at Neendakara, Kollam on 19 December 2019. Students organized various as entertainment
programmes like song, dance and skit for the special children. The inmates were given a greeting card
and a piece of cake as a token of love.

The Christmas celebration in DPS was on 20 December 2019. Children from Grade I – VI showcased
various programmes to entertain the parents as well as their friends. The Santa Claus presented gifts to
each and every child and it marked a moment of joy to everyone. The main centre of attraction was the
21 feet high Christmas tree that was fully made of coconut husk.

The Annual Day was celebrated in collaboration with Safe Kollam Project on 17 February 2020. The
maiden Annual Day musical programme, The Flower of Gold was the final fruit of the efforts put in by
the students and teachers of DPS, Kollam. The programme was inaugurated by Abdul Nazar I A S, the
District Collector, Kollam. Mukesh, M L A and Jai Lal, M L A were the Chief Guests of the occasion.
Prasanna Master, Cine Choreographer, was the Celebrity Guest of the evening. The Chairman and the
Directors of the school graced the occasion with their valuable presence. The programme was well
appreciated by all.
On account of the pandemic threat (COVID 19) prevailed, the school for students closed on 9 March
2020. The teachers were present on campus till 14 March 2020 for the completion of report cards and
other academic related works.
