F or most of us, New Year’s is a time when we start over. We evaluate our lives and make a resolution that we hope will result in some type of transformation and happiness. (bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/010221.cfm) January 2 Readings The epiphany of the lord First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6: Upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory. Responsorial: Psalm 72: Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6: We are partners in the promise of Christ through the Gospel. Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12: After following the star to Bethlehem, the magi present their gifts to Jesus.
Epiphany, the feast of revelation Divinity of Jesus is revealed through visit of three kings Celebrated 12 days after Christmas, the Epiphany (from the Greek word meaning revelation), is one of the oldest feast days on the calendar. Traditions all over the world range from gift-giving to king cakes to blessing of homes. Through the visit of Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar to Bethlehem, Jesus is revealed as the son of God who came for everyone. The kings present gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus to recognize his divinity and status. The gifts also anticipate Jesus’s crucifixion as they are traditional burial herbs. Welcom e! Where does your faith fit in when you make those annual resolutions? Here are some ideas for adding a spiritual component to your commitments. Read the Bible. Join one of the Encounter Bible studies st-ann.org/encounter or try the Bible in a Year podcast with Father Mike Schmitz of Ascension Press, tinyurl.com/y52hqmtl. Get to know the saints. Learn about a new saint every week or month and try to imitate his or her life and virtues. Ask for their intercession. Use these sites to help: • franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day • mycatholic.life/saints/saints-of-the-liturgical-year/ • aleteia.org/author/meg-hunter-kilmer/page/3/ (biographies of 50 saints) Sign up for a holy hour. The Catholic bishops have declared 2022 the Year of the Eucharist. What better use of time than to spend it with Jesus? Sign up for Eucharistic adoration (let’s face it, there is more accountability when we sign up for something). Visit st-ann.org/adoration for details. Commit to daily silent prayer. Commit to a certain amount of time every day just being still before the Lord. Start with 15 minutes a day, and try to stretch it to 20 for Lent, then go from there. Need help on how to do it? Read Becky Eldredge’s book “The Inner Chapel.” It will transform your quiet prayer time. Go on a retreat. It can be really difficult to find a way to leave home, work and family, but a retreat can be life-changing. Make a commitment to go on a retreat this year, whether directed or silent. Try Ignatius House, ignatiushouse.org, or the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, trappist.net/plan-your-visit/retreats. Change what you listen to. Sanctify your commute or listening time by infusing it with Christ. Instead of Top 40, try some Audrey Assad, Matt Maher or Ed Bolduc. Turn off the talk radio and listen to a podcast. Try one of these options: • Father John Riccardo: youwerebornforthis.fireside.fm • Ave Explores: aveexplores.fireside.fm/episodes • Abiding Together: abidingtogetherpodcast.com • Pints with Jack: pintswithjack.com • More options: tinyurl.com/3d7y6fhz New Year’s resolutions are hard to keep, but we belong to a church that continually gives us a second chance. So, make these commitments and set yourself a reminder for March 1 (just before Ash Wednesday) to check in on how things are going and try to start fresh for Lent. Then do the same thing for Easter, for Ordinary Time and again for Advent. By the end of the year, you will have made a real change!
