January 9, 2022 - Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Baptism: A New Creation & Commitment Last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany—the manifestation of the Infant Jesus to the nations through the Magi. This weekend, we solemnly celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is a manifestation of Jesus as the Son of God and Servant of Yahweh. With this feast, our Christmas season draws to a close. The Monday following the feast of the Baptism of the Lord is Monday of the first week of Ordinary Time. In the Eastern Church, this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ, the Holy Trinity appeared clearly to mankind for the first time: the Father's voice is heard from Heaven, the Son of God is standing physically in the Jordan, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove to empower him so he could fulfill his saving mission. This was the crucial turning point of Christ’s life. In being baptized by John, Jesus expressed his willingness to respond to and accept his Father’s will and His mission. It was the beginning of Jesus’s public ministry. This event in the life of Jesus prompts us to reflect on our own baptism and its significance for our lives. To be baptized means to be born again. It is a new birth, birth by water and the Spirit, a birth which introduces us into a new life. Through our baptism, we share the life of Jesus Christ, a life of intimacy with the divine family of the Trinity. To be baptized means to be washed spotless, to be freed from iniquity. We become a new creation washed clean in the blood of the Lamb. To be baptized means to be plunged into the paschal mystery of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, and to live a new life. Today’s feast should prompt us to renew our commitment to making Jesus the very center of our lives. Let us renew our commitment to our common baptismal vocation to be salt and light to the world and seek to do so by leading lives of humble love and service to others. We do this so that when our time comes to stand before Jesus, he might say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. My Father is well pleased. Come, enter the gates of paradise.” As we dip our hands into the baptismal font, let us think of our dignity, our call, and God’s statement of our commission: you are my beloved in whom I am well pleased. Go, be my disciple. Then let us be just that! May God bless us. Fr.Sriram.Sadhanala@dor.org, 585-586-8089 x. 123; Sun-Tues-Thurs-every other Sat: 3pm Rosary on Facebook @ Sriram Sadhanala

SYNOD 2021-2022 Social Outreach IS THE SYNOD A NEW PARISH PROGRAM? JANUARY 8-9 PHILLIP THE VAN Actually, it is not a parish program. The synod is a FOOD COLLECTION specially crafted process that Pope Francis has chosen Most Needed Items: Mac & Cheese, Coffee, for the church —- to listen —- to the church. All in Applesauce, Tuna, Pop-Tarts and Cereal dialogue with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Help restock our city food pantries and the new walk-through Penfield Hope pantry! It’s part of a prayerful process that we probably know well, but just in another way. If we’ve ever said even one prayer, we have been guided by the Holy Spirit! WHAT IS A SYNOD? A synod process is a sharing between people of different ages, backgrounds, spirituality, but with a desire to be one with the Spirit, and together create a bright future. SOUNDS LIKE IT’S FOR CLERGY OR THEOLOGIANS Not at all! The process is meant to be clergy, religious & laity learning how to be ‘missionary disciples,’ TOGETHER! It’s like Jesus taught the apostles—he taught them and prepared them for the time when he would no longer be there. It’s our turn to enhance our preparation for the mission.
