Editors report I am positive that you all are “fed up” with news on the Covid virus and how it is impacting all of us. One of the prerequisites of the magazine is that it must be a platform where everything related to Mo- torhoming is reported on and what are our members are doing, I am not going to say anything further on the impact of the virus but try to focus on the things that we love: Motorhoming. Mo- torhomes still got sold and bought with new members coming to the club. Rallies held on a virtual basis as well as some small groups getting together. Committee meetings held to decide what the regions should ideally do and what not. This edition will also include a nice report from one of our founding members on how the club started (thank you Sir). Also find some guidelines on how to prepare for the people you leave behind when you pass on. I know it is not an issue we want to dwell on but the reality remains. Feedback on our travels to Namibia earlier this year also continue and hopefully you will appreciate the fun we had! Groetnis, Ari MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 6
Chairman’s report Hi Everyone, Spring is here, camping is open, interprovincial travel is allowed and everybody is much happier- isn’t that great. Talk is on about a move to Level1. On a serious note, according to the medical fraternity Covid 19 is not yet over so social distancing and masks should still apply. It is still law to wear a mask in a public space, this would include the common are- as of the campgrounds. We are all adults and must just use our common sense, people should not be offended by being greeted without a hug and not being invited into someone else motorhome. We can still rally together, chat to each other at an appropriate distance, maybe braai in small groups. Personally, I believe we should not have any meetings in a closed hall yet, nobody knows if somebody has Covid, do not presume your best friend is fine. Go out and en- joy the great outdoors but please be careful. Some regions have had actual rallies in August, Northvaal and Freestate both had the first ever virtual rally where every- body rallied wherever they found themselves, mostly at home! There were two Zoom sessions at the rallies, it was a historic event and fun to participate in. Most regions will have their AGM in September with Northvaal and the National AGM planned for late November. The Northern convergence will not take place this year but the plan to hold a National conver- gence, hopefully in March next year is still in place, this is planned for Gariep Dam. The resorts have all been closed until re- cently, so a date has not yet been finalized. Keep well and keep safe Happy Motorhoming Tim Swanepoel MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 7

Are you prepared? Some items for all of us to consider and to prepare for that day that will impact all of us one day! When a husband dies very often the following happens • His banking account gets frozen • His credit card gets frozen and if it is a joint card then the spouses card also gets frozen • If the husband is the medical aid main member then the debit order will be unpaid by the bank and the spouse will have to ask the medical aid to make the necessary change- or could find themselves not covered It is the same for all your debit orders Tv etc. It is, therefore, to start with, that every wife should have opened a banking account before the pensioner dies, as it is especially difficult at our ages, without an outside income to do so . They should ideally also have a valid credit card in their own name Other aspects that have come to the fore- • Do you have an up to date last will and testament • Do you have a living will ( just remember this is a difficult document to gain acceptance- but I have seen success when a person has been of life support for a while) • Does your spouse have an intimate knowledge of your banking details and have they been accustomed to making monthly payments • Does she know your passwords • Does your spouse know what the monthly expenses are and what is your budget • Is your income going to be reduced • Does you spouse know what your position is with SARS • Does she know how to take the deduction on your tax for Medical expenses MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 9
NEW MEMBERS I recently read an article in a Dutch newspaper where the sale of motorhomes was discussed. An unbelievable new mar- ket was created due to Covid-19 and demand was high for motorhomes. Although initially surprised I then established that the advantage of having your own ablution facilities in the motorhome was one of the big reasons for this demand. Not sure that we will have the same response here in SA. We however also continue to grow in numbers and are thankful to have the following new members. Welcome to you all! Hope you enjoy your new acquisition as much as we do and please note: we want to see you at our rallies! Western Cape Eastern Cape Mpumalanga cont. Northvaal cont. Letters from our Members: Dear Fellow Motorhomers It is with deep regret that, having sold my motorhome in November last year, I must now resign from the Motorhome Club. I have enjoyed being a member for more than 30 years, being a founder member of the Eastern Cape Branch. I well remem- ber in 1987 when a contingent travelled from the Eastern Cape to what was then known as The Lakes Caravan Park (now Pi- rates Creek) in Wilderness to meet with a group from Johannesburg with the intent to form a region of the Motorhome Club of SA. We (me and my travelling companion Sylvia Ross) arrived late and could not find the park, circling back eventually to Sedgefield and then landing up well after dark at Wilderness Caravan Park. Next morning we could see the gathering across the river and arrived in time for the meeting. We had no difficulty in forming the region in Port Elizabeth and although small to start with, this has grown. When I moved to Cape Town in 2010, people asked me if I had friends in that town and my an- swer was ‘a whole bunch but they haven’t met me yet’ so my association with the motorhome club continued unabated. They have been wonderful years and I have travelled as far afield as Namibia and Malawi, and of course around South Africa. Thank you, Motorhome Club, I am going to miss you and the way of life but I have decided to invest in a small cottage on my son’s property in Wilderness and guess what it will be called? “The Wheels Came Off!” Yours sincerely Shirley Spencer (Mrs) Shirley Spencer 6 Ryneveld Square GRAAFF REINET 6280 Cell: 083 391 0600 Email: Shirley@goweb.co.za MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 11

Trip to Namibia I continue with our wonderful trip of March / April 2020: Swakopmund: 11/3/2020. A day I will not easily forget. Koos and Deidre arrive early to take us on our first “dunes” experience. First stop is just outside the gates to our resort where a 4x4 sand track is awaiting us. After a short but plain guide and rule speech is delivered by Sexy Koos he asks me to take the track first. Can you believe it— tyres down, 4 wheel engaged and -my little Jimny goes through without any problems. Obviously I am as proud as can be and think that I am now ready for action. How little did I know!! We leave for the road to Walvis in convoy. Just before Langstrand we turn left into the dunes where we stop for our first activity. Climbing dunes is not as easy as it sounds. Tired but pleased we get to the top with our “boogey boards”, organised by Koos. Now it is down hill for those that dare. First one to take the plunge is my love Herma. The idea is to see who gets furthest. The winner of the day was Val. She really managed to slide with speed and glamour well past all our destinations. The only problem with going so far is that you have to get back again. Tired but pleased we leave this lovely spot behind us and carry on in the Jimnys to see whether they can drive the dunes now. As you can see time to deflate tyres. (perhaps the first time but definitely not the last!) MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 14
On the way we stop at a carcass of a whale on the beach. Thereafter we have lunch- eon on the beach and Sir Swanepoel brings out his “Swannie”. Behave!! I am talking of the fold up braai which only uses paper for heat and which is well known to most of us for a quick boerewors roll next to the road. As known it is mainly used to braai wors in no time at all. Whilst the braais are going some dare to make their feet wet in this cold sea. With our stomachs full we now travel more inland to test the skills of the drivers and see how far we can push the Jimnys. With the necessary “wax hom” support from the ones that know we get on top of the dunes. The idea being that once on top you turn right and hang with your vehicle over the ridge. Once there you slide down the slope with your vehicle whilst listening to the roaring sand. All new model Jimnys manage this without too much trouble. I unfortunately try it three times and still do not get the right momentum to go over the ridge. In the process I also get stuck on the way up and Koos comes down to help me. Gerald decides he is also coming around to help us but in the process lands in a deep hole. On our radios and following our enquir- ies as to where he is we only got the message: I am in a “diep gat”. He surely was! Fortunately he did not roll his vehicle although we all wonder how he managed to do this. It takes us the rest of the afternoon to help him to get out. Big fun! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 15

The pictures on the previous page reflect some of the amazing things we experienced. From fla- mingos, seals, a fox, Koos fishing, driving on the beach, the light tower (now an hotel) to a wreck on the beach. That evening we get our supper (fish and chips) from the yellow bus called “Fork ‘n Nice” and I have to admit it was nice! Again an absolute magic day. The next day (13 March) we visit the “Kristal gallery”. Rather unbelievable and a real paradise for the ladies. The jewellery is astonishing, unfortunately the prices as well. Now it is the centre of town where all the smaller souvenir shops are found and before luncheon we visit a leather shop and a wool factory. Amazing to see how the wool is cleaned then spun and finally used to make the most beautiful tapestries. With purchases made we now go to the German Brewery restaurant for luncheon. Our attendant gets to- tally confused with the size of the group and manages to mix up our order rather drastically. Fortunately the beer is good. 14 March and we are on the road just after 8. This time we are going all the way to Walvis as and thereafter to Sandwich Harbour. A special permit for this trip is required, fortunately our local friends arranged all this before the time! :-), as well as a guide to take us there and back. Unbe- lievable beautiful. We again get a fox on the way there as well as old ruins of buildings from way back. After a quick luncheon we need to travel back ASAP before the tide turns in. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 17
On the way back we all drive up the dunes behind the salt works. To come down we all stand next to one another and go down with the sound of the sand roaring as the Jimnys slide down. Unfortunately no pictures available but we have it on video. Magic and what an experience. Early morning we are up again as today we go on a ‘desert tour’ called the ‘little five’. Two Landrover's filled up by the group and off we go. Our main guide is Chris who has unbelieva- ble knowledge of the wildlife in the desert and the way he explains it has us in stitches from laughing and astounded on how the desert life keeps going. His co-guide goes searching for animals whilst he explains how the desert is impacted by people and their behaviour. Before he is finished with his story she comes back and leads us to a very poisonous small snake that is hidden in the sand. Unbelievable how she managed to find him. All that can be seen is the eyes. After a bit of encouragement the snake comes out and tries to get away. Apart from the animals we get to see the actual scenery is also an experience. From red to yellow to black to white. What a variety of different sand for- mations. The iron collected out of the black sand with a magnet is astounding and the pictures that are taken are multiple. A tru- ly worthwhile experience should you ever get to the area!! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 18

After an astonishing morning we all drove through to Koos and Deidre’s residence for luncheon. Prior to the trip this speciality was arranged and orders were sub- mitted and paid for, before we left SA. But to actually see the end result on a braai was something else!! Herma was in seventh heaven with crayfish her ultimate dish! First the cleaning had to be done then on the fire where each crayfish had to be basted with tender care and love. Many a watchful eye to make sure that this delicacy was not ruined but given that everything was eaten and finished I am comfortable in saying this was a great success! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 20
After a quiet Monday morning, with laundry and shopping the main activities, we drive north of Swakop in the afternoon. We drive past “Windpomp 14” all the way to Zeila Wreck. Nothing else in the area but as we stop, the traders trying to sell local intricacies, appear out of nowhere. On our way back we drive through the little settlement of Wlotzkasbaken and have a quick look at the camp resort at Mile 4. Considering the openness and layout of the resort it is rather unthinkable that the resort is fully booked over December months. Shows you the dedication of fisherman!! The hotel on the seafront is beautiful but has no guests (thanks to Covid—19). The evening we are treated to a visit of the Woermann House with its original named “Damara Tower”. The views from the tower are pretty magnificent and to top this all we were provided with lovely fresh oysters which could be had with or without spices. Very very enjoyable although not everyone's “cup of tea”. The building is owned by the Swakopmund administration and is an historic monu- ment. Very privileged to have been granted these visiting rights! Another confir- mation of the hospitality, so typical, of the people of Namibia! As you can see some man loved it! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 21
It is Tuesday and a day for a boat trip in the Walvisbay harbour. What an experience! The way the seals and pelicans ma- neuver on the boat and in between us is something else. Although no dolphins or whales we are treated with OB’s, Coffee, Beer a lovely luncheon and to top it all a sighting of a Mola Mola fish (Sunfish). Even the crew members are de- lighted and over the moon (no pun intended) with this! Lekker man! Lekker! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 22
Wednesday: The original plan was to visit the Salt works but due to the virus our group is too big and the tour had to be cancelled. Instead we are off to Dune 7 today. Another well known landmark that most tourists visit. Unbelievable views from the top but to get there was not easy. A pity you are not allowed to use the Jimny.. Must use your own two feet! Herma enjoyed the trip down a lot more that the up. Wonder why.. Entrance to the dune On the way back we stop at the jetties in Walvis Bay for luncheon. Consensus was reached that fried calamari is a winner with grilled losing on the day. Thursday: Today we are going “Bundu” bashing in a river bed. All pictures to this trip are on the next page. We are travelling through the river bed to reach our end destination: Goani Kontes Oasis. Dur- View as you approach the dune ing the original planning of our trip we intended to go and spend a day and night here. This un- fortunately fell through due to a misunderstanding. However what a day!! First stop is the moon landscape area. Unbelievable to see this totally different environment. It is thought that a Hollywood movie was taken in the area (possibly Avatar?) and when you stand in the barren landscape you can well imagine that it could have been used by them. What an experience. View from the top (see our Jimnys parked at the bottom) From there we visit the “musical rocks”. Tim manages to get a good tune going and sexy Koos sings a serenade to Deidre. Great!! Further travels take us past old ruins of various houses and a trading post used in days gone by. As we travel we see turn offs to farms in the district and you wonder what the owners live off. Desert live at its best! At the oasis we have luncheon before we tackle the road back home again Proof that I also tackled the climb. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 23

Its Friday and the idea is to go to the museums today. Early morning we are however entertained by a number of camels that walk next to the resort. Unfortunately all the museums are closed due to the virus and we end up doing some shopping in a German delicatessen shop where we find various types of flavoured bottled garlic —very very nice! Late afternoon we all go back to the dunes again in our Jimnys to celebrate Val’s birthday with wine and pizza. After a bit of convincing both myself and Maryna tackle the “lip—slide over” again and with a bit of help from the spectators we both manage it. It needs to be mentioned that Maryna did worry when sexy Koos told her that “indien nodig gaan ons jou oor stoot”. They also all heard, to great enjoyment, how Tim on the way down repeatedly shouted “take your foot of the brake!”. She however did the amazing slide and all we can say is: WELL DONE Maryna! We are all so proud of you!! Great to be able to hear the rumble of the sand as you slide down!! As we sit around a “local Jimny” owner comes driving up to us having “heard” that we are all back on the dunes again. He needed answers and wanted to enquire what and who we are with everyone in the district knowing about our group. Big fun! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 26
Saturday and last travelling day in Swakopmund. Three of us decide to go and see whether we can find the Welwitschia plants. This plant can only be found in Namibia and nowhere else in the world. They survive for hundreds of years and are truly extraordinaire. We decide to leave the other two and head back home. The other two decide to travel on and see whether they can find the “Flintstone caves”. Around the camp/braai fires that evening, at Koos and Deidre’s place, we hear that they did find them although they were disappointed to note how previous visitors have thrown away their bottles, cans and other waste in the area. After a most delicious braai—THANKS Koos and Deidre for all your hospitality! - we leave with full stomachs and ample braai wood for the days ahead, having purchased this from the stock that Koos had. Unfortunately he will have to get new stock again for himself. The Sunday is cleaning and preparation time for our trip up north to St Nowhere and the skeleton coast in the week ahead. Will keep you posted on this and more in the next edition. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 27
Our Family and The Motorhomer After the 1st (Dirty Dozen plus One) initial meet-up and satisfactory rally at Lovers Rock over the weekend of 11th – 13th April, 1984 when it was decided to formally establish and inaugurate the MCSA/MKSA, those of us who elected to become its first office bearers very suddenly realised of course that one of our biggest challenges was to ensure that we kept in touch with each other. Far easier said than done, as the age of computer communications was only then in its infancy. Having ex- changed personal information with each other at the rally, the realisation that in order to arrange further “get togethers” we would need someone (probably me as the first appointed club secretary) to organise a “likely list” of invitees and potentially interested future members/ralliers. Wildrich Groenewald and his wife Erica had been mainly instrumental in coordinating this first Lovers Rock meeting through their friends, customers and known motorhome owners of that time. I had then documented and recorded this event for the archives. Our next get-together/rally at Warmbaths (5 months later – 22/25th June) was well supported (via word of mouth, recom- mendations/grape vine etc.) The club was up and running and communication amongst members and to the outside world was now one of our main priorities. Membership was growing faster than we originally anticipated with members residing far and wide outside of our initial Transvaal/Reef catchment area. Regrettably, soon after the formation of the club and the Warmbaths Rally, my own personal circumstances changed dramati- cally and I needed to hand over my secretarial roll to Tiny Steenkamp, a well-known member of the Caravan Club fraternity for many years. He had numerous contacts in the “outdoor” and camping world and was ideally suited to spreading the word of the formation of the Motorhome Club – being well connected and a larger than life character! Two immediate issues became obvious during our first year. Namely, inclusivity for all members within the club along with reasonably distanced rally venues to cater for all members. A sub-division of that issue was the question of using our totally independent living arrangements to escape recognised caravan parks and adopt a more adventurous “bundu” type of week- end away from it all, somewhere or other in the bush without all the mod-con facilities provided! MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 28
Pressures created by members living outside of the Transvaal (the then only region) started to build as quite naturally folk wanted to enjoy the benefits of belonging to a club whose main purpose was to get away for a weekend with like-minded souls. Critical mass having been achieved outside of the Transvaal and immediate environs region with sufficient members in both the Western Cape and Natal who had voiced their desire to form their own groupings/regions for the purpose of organising their own local rallies, these regions then became officially established/inaugurated. Now the bureaucracy of how to keep everybody informed and in the loop structurally and financially took on a very different (legal) complexion. Clearly as all these new club developments were rapidly taking place during our first year of existence, an official “mouthpiece” was now an imperative. Welcome the birth of “The Motorhomer” – initially a single page A4 sheet. Tiny, had done a great job of recording our committee meetings and now this information along with our ideals, objectives, ethos, responsible people, office bearers, notice of meetings, contact numbers and details of our ever-expanding member- ship list were featured. Jim Williams A typical example of a page in one of the first editions of the magazine. These were printed on an A4 page and then circulated by mail (post) to all members. Where are the days??
Western cape region Surviving Lockdown with a Motorhome We were lucky, Iris and myself, as we were part of those that could travel for work during stage 4. Naturally Stage 5 was a complete lockdown and no movement occurred during that time. Quite an unearthly experience those 5 weeks that stage 5 existed. Had anybody seen this evolution of society coming in 2020? At stage 4 I was able to get to the motorhome on the odd occasion, keep the batteries up and running, and monitor the solar panels. Come Stage 3 it was as if a bird had been set free when travel was announced. As soon as possible we travelled to the mo- torhome that is stored in Somerset West and did our first cruise in 9 weeks. A trip through picturesque Stellenbosch led us to the most beautiful Helshoogte pass and down into the Pniél community. On the way to Franschhoek you drive through beau- tiful tree lined Autumn lanes adorned in the oranges and rustic hues brought on by the change of season. A leisurely lunch and coffee was had at some of the destitute establishments who had just opened and were trying to trade in the warm after- noon sun. We then made the same trip in reverse through the golden treelined Autumnal lanes. Such a brilliantly simple thing to do with so much reward. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 34
Two weeks later and travel restrictions allowed for provincial travel and so we embarked on a longer day trip. Back to the motorhome, run up the fridges, all the electronic gadgetry to test the systems, and load cameras for a day out. Following a giant storm that had just passed though the Cape we were almost ensured dramatic, somewhat rainy and cold conditions. Heading over Sir Lowry's Pass we stopped for some of the most awesome pies available, made at the Houwhoek Farm Stall. Simply the best sausage rolls ever and pies ever, if your going past there. Onwards we went through the increasingly green wheat fields made up of freshly planted wheat, following the good rains we had during lock-down. A right hand turn past the giant wind turbines and through Caledon took us to a part of this neck of the woods that is extremely beautiful with rolling hills called the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Heaven and Earth - pretty much a perfect description of the grandeur of the place. A long winding road snakes through some of South Afri- ca's most iconic vineyards - Hamilton Russell, Creation wines, Bouchard Finlayson and Southern Right- to mention just a few. Meandering through the winding bends one is constantly surprised by the grandeur of the unfolding landscape, eventually exiting the valley just short of seaside village of Hermanus. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 35
Back we drove towards Cape Town, taking the undulating coastal road past Kleinmond, Betty's Bay and Hangklip, all beautiful sea side villages. A lunch stop at the panoramic Koggelbaai Biosphere while rain gently tapped on the roof, saw us eventually emerge out in scenic Gordon's Bay, and back to the storage site for the motorhome. In essence those trips made the isolation bearable and in the end the trips became an utterly enjoyable escape from the isolation at home. On another trip we went to the Hex River valley in pursuit of the earliest Cape snow seen for years. Grandeur landscapes packed full of vines set in Autumnal shades, counter set against stark white snow, was rated by photographers as the best scenario seen in 10 years. Once one exits the Hex River, climbs the pass and enters the Klein Karoo you need to look out for the R318 on the right hand side. What a glorious piece of road this is, that winds through the heavily snow laden Matroosberg mountains, with a heady mix of Karoo landscape and fertile valleys full of fruit orchards. Rooihoogtepass, a carefully sculpted hairpin bend pass requires some fine attention as you drop back down from the Karoo to the lower edges of Montagu. Set in this idyllic valley is the well known Protea Farm tractor rides and Potjie Kos - famous for the owner driven tractor rides to the top of the imposing Dassieshoek mountain range and rental Chalets. Heaps of snow, window deep, cover this unique landscape at the right time of the year. An inviting lunch road side of the fruit farms before Montagu, saw us once again head home via the N2 into Cape Town In our motorhome and with such a vast and beautiful landscapes at our beck and call, we are truly blessed to live in this remarkable place that invites delight and discovery. Pine creek 14 to 16 Aug 2020 Report by Marinda Wolsink We had a great weekend despite the weather at Pine Lodge Port Elizabeth. We were only 6 Vans and could spend quality time together. On Saturday morning we prepared a breakfast together which was enjoyed by all. The ladies all worked nicely together and we had a splendid morning. The Breakfast was followed by a game of Dominos. Johnny and Glenise walked away as the winners. The evening the members were surprised with an Oxtail Pot sponsored by die Motorhome Club. Ideal weather for this pot and it was devoured! Our AGM Rally weekend in September will be confirmed asap. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 38
Mpumalanga region LOCKDOWN RALLY - MPUMALANGA The national lockdown was announced the day after the Mpumalanga Region’s Olifants River Camp rally ended. As we were initially “grounded” for a relatively short period it didn’t sound too bad. By late March the urge to go camping be- came very real. The fact that Koos and Anna-Marie van Heerden were touring Namibia with Tim and company and kept us updated on a WhatsApp group didn’t make things any easier! Early April Anton Fourie decided that if we can’t rally in person a virtual rally had to be held as Covid-19 couldn’t be spread that way. A message was sent to all the club members to sound them out about the idea. Have you people ever noticed how these so-called “oldies” are all sitting on their phones/tablets chatting and video-calling their families? Quite a few motorhomers were enthusiastic about the idea and it was decided that a “WhatsApp” braai will be held. Not being a committee member, I now appreciate the effort going into arranging a rally! Just try and get a group of fossils to agree on a time for a braai… Eventually agreement was reached – the 10th April was way beyond April Fool’s Day and at 12 the fires were started and (probably) the first Motorhome Virtual Braai started. It was great to see our friends again. As usual, there was a lot of teasing, joking and fun. As is befitting, our Chairperson, Johan Theart went all out. He had his motorhome’s awning out, and his setup looked almost the same as at every rally, except he didn’t have the side panel of his awning up. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 39
A great time was had by all, so great that we had a few more braais! Different members “attended” the braais, and the warm friendships and camaraderie experienced at rallies were there without fail. A few takeaways: Members are actually closer to each other than I’ve thought. It was awesome to share the good and the bad, like Elsa’s serious fall on a walk that resulted In her looking like a serious Gender-Based Violence victim and Marietjie who had an argument with a dog that resulted in a nasty wound and skin transplant. Needless to say, the “sympathy” was cloaked in jokes. Nobody tried to steal the coals under another member’s meat. WhatsApp works great, although only 8 phones can be part of a chat. As great as it is to chat with your friends, the social interaction is sorely missed. It seems this idea caught on, with a bigger virtual rally to be held soon. It’s OK, we didn’t patent the idea! PS. All social distancing rules were obeyed – members were very far apart – as in White River in the east and Upington in the west. Written by Anton Fourie MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 40
KZN region Report by Rosemary Harlow – KZN Secretary This year has been a disaster for our camping rally itinerary with all campsites closed for the Covid 19 lockdown. Apart from checking our wheels and driving a small distance to petrol stations (for me this was a total of 5kms) to have tyres checked and petrol filled etc. the rest of our time has been just waiting for the day we can get out properly again! I keep telling myself to get in the van and overhaul all the junk collected and give the whole van a proper clean-up but I must admit that the lockdown has made me lazy, so I keep putting this off and so far have only cleared one cupboard! Hope- fully we can get camping again before the end of the year. McNichols Bazley Beach – 21-23 February 2020 Report by Ann Robinson Our Rally 21-23 February started early, with some keen motorhomers arriving on 20th already. I am not sure if it was the delicious scones which get served up with cream and jam at morning tea time, the promise of pancakes or if it was the brilliant weather we experienced…. By Friday afternoon a total of 9 vans (16 people in total) had arrived and set up to enjoy the weekend. Bazley Beach namely McNichol Resort has been running since 1971 under the helm of the McNichol family. You arrive to a cup of tea, while friendly staff will help you erect a tent or awning. The Staff and management are extremely pleasant and make you feel most welcomed. The park is situated less than 100kms from Durban and 90 meters from miles of un- spoilt beach, and on the banks of the Ifafa Lagoon. While remaining very country and beautiful, they have all the facili- ties needed for a getaway weekend or longer stay. The ablution blocks are spotless and modern, with 8 sights having pri- vate ablutions. Sites are large and mainly shaded. Sporting 2 swimming pools, one heated in the cooler months enabling swimming throughout the year, fully catered shop and bottle store. Fishing, canoeing and walks all set the peacefulness of the Campsite. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 41
Most of the Friday afternoon was spent around the swimming pool with lots of chattering and catch ups being done. That night each to his own, gathered about in small groups and discussed the wonderful weather we had been blessed with. Saturday was just as hot, most people splashing about, eating ice creams, going for short walks due to the heat. And at 4.00pm….. Our idyllic world changed…. We heard the rolling thunder, saw the fast approaching black clouds and most of us headed for our vans, taking in awnings and packing away a lot of outside items. But, once again, the fires were lit and a few enjoyed a communal bring and braai. Chairman welcomed newcomers Thea and Kevin on their first rally. Very interestingly, their son has won 2 very prestig- ious awards for a short 10 minute video “AURORA SAVES” - which can be found on U-Tube. I would really like to share this as it is very important to our world. If you want to watch something really worthwhile, check it out. Sunday morning we packed up in the rain and left. All in all, it was a very good weekend in spite of the last several hours of rain. MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 42
Northvaal region virtual rally August 2020 Our members could no longer control their itchiness, they had to get into the motorhomes and go camping, COID-19 was the only thing holding them back, and of course the added lock-down! Being true campers, they could no longer hold out. After a very tiring trip of 20 meters, most of us reached our campsite. Following the example of the government, zoom meetings were held, with many a photo and experience being shared by members. Here is a collage as posted by some of the members. Inspirational Thoughts (Editor: Isn't this the reason why we rally together!!) MCSA Magazine 3rd Edition 2020 47
With so many jokes doing the rounds from the beginning of the lock down I felt the need to provide the following short ones for you: My boss told me to have a good day… so I went home Why is Peter Pan always flying? He neverlands The other day, my wife asked me to pass her lipstick but I accidentally passed her a glue stick. She still isn’t talking to me. When you look really closely, all mirrors look like eyeballs. What do you call a guy with a rubber toe? Roberto. I told my wife she drew her eyebrows too high. She seemed surprised. I’m so good at sleeping. I can do it with my eyes closed. Why did the old man fall in the well? Because he couldn’t see that well. My wife told me I had to stop acting like a flamingo. So I had to put my foot down. As I suspected, someone has been adding soil to my garden. The plot thickens. Did you hear about the Italian chef that died? He pasta way. I think I would like a job at cleaning mirrors, it’s just something I could really see myself doing. Just remember—you are never really completely useless, you can always serve as a bad example. Two cows are standing in a field. One cow says “Did you hear about that freak outbreak of mad cow disease? It makes cows go completely insane!”. The other cow replies “Good thing I’m a helicopter”.
