Attendance We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. School participation helps people to develop important skills, knowledge and values which set them up for further learning and participation in their community. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future. There is no safe number of days for missing school. Every Day Counts. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Every Minute Counts… The beginning of each school day is an important time where the learning tasks for the day are discussed and lessons get underway. On average, we have 15 students a day who do not arrive by 8:45am, the official start to the school day. And therefore, from When your child misses That equals… Which is… Kindy to Year 12 just… that is …. 50 minutes of learning Nearly 1 ½ weeks per Nearly ½ a year of 10 minutes each day each week year school 1 hour and 40 minutes of Nearly 2 ½ weeks per 20 minutes each day Nearly a year of school learning each week year ½ a day of learning each Nearly 1 ½ years of ½ an hour each day 4 weeks per year week learning 1 whole day of learning 8 weeks per year or Over 2 ½ years of 1 hour each day each week nearly a term learning Your child’s best learning time is at the beginning of each day. School starts at 8:45am – DON’T BE LATE! I would appreciate Parent support regarding this matter. Open Home - Meet the Teachers It was third time lucky for our recent Open Home-Meet the Teachers afternoon / evening. Approx 75% of families took the opportunity to come and view the classrooms, meet the teacher and generally enjoy the interaction of the occasion.
Mentoring Fine Young Owairoa Leaders Two weeks ago, sixteen eager faces sat in a circle, ready to take on a day long mentoring programme entitled “Eight Great Habits”, delivered by long-time Owairoa friend and mentor, Mr Garth Collings. Especially formulated for our newly appointed House Leaders and Deputy House Leaders, the course aimed to coach these students for their new leadership roles within our school. The day-long course introduced our young leaders to ‘The 8 Great Habits’ and guided them through many exciting activities and tasks to help equip the students with skills to navigate their way through life. Mr Collings has had a long association with our school, and commented “I love going to Owairoa School as the students are so eager to learn. At the end of the day, the students make an individual presentation mentioning the highlight for them personally, the habit they need to work on, how the Habits Training will help them in school and home, along with creating a Personal Mission Statement that they can refer to in the future”. Our learners were bursting with excitement and could not wait to dive into the pool. The event began with the Championship Freestyle race. This race saw a few of our learners progress to the final heats. We managed to snatch a couple of podium positions. Next were the novice freestyle events. Once again, our swimmers did us proud and we managed to get some more podium positions. After the freestyle events, the nine and ten-year-old swimmers raced in the backstroke and breaststroke events. We once again bagged podium positions. The last events were the much-anticipated freestyle relays. What a buzz these caused! All our relay swimmers did us proud, however our nine-year-old “A” relay team pulled the cat out of the bag and won the event. In third place at the start of the final freestyle relay lap, Soyo decided that the race would be ours, and shifted into top gear within seconds. She caught the leading swimmer with 5 meters to go and first place was ours! A massive undertaking like this cannot be done without the dedication of our parent helpers and staff, for which, as a school we are eternally grateful for. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Point View Primary School for hosting the event. The stars of the day were our learners. Not only did they display great sportsmanship and aptitude, but their behaviour was impeccable. We were often the only school sitting quietly for the start of the races. Owairoa swimmers R.I.S.E above the rest!
Playing in the Spirit of the Game On Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 March, our Owairoa Cricket Team travelled to Lloyd Elsmore Park to represent Owairoa in the HPPA Cricket competition. Fourteen students took part across the two days, allowing everyone who demonstrated great cricket skills to participate. All team members showed overwhelming enthusiasm during prac- tises, making the most of their limited training time and availability of facilities in the lead up to the competition. Wednesday’s games were hard fought with everyone trying their best. Unfortunately we were unable to win a game, which included two narrow losses. Thursday began with a couple of losses, but all the hard work paid off in the end and we were able to win our last game comprehensively. Player of the tournament was awarded to Yash Singh, for his excellent batting and bowling display. Despite most results going against us, the team displayed excellent sportsmanship as per our Fair Play Charter. A huge thank you to the parents who supported us by way of transport, refreshments, photographs and assistance with equipment. Capital Works Work is progressing well with our two major construction capital works projects. The two storey block remediation is progressing well and the second aerial bridge is currently being installed. We are hoping to have this work completed by the end of Term Two. The construction of the new two storey 18-classroom block has got off to a good start with foundation work nearly completed. We are hoping to take possession of the new facility by January 2022.
Covid-19 and Beyond While lockdown is over for the time being and students are back at school, the poster below may help deal with anxiety and other feelings generated by the virus pandemic.
Meet the PTA / AGM Evening We had a marvelous turnout for our wine and cheese evening and AGM held on Tuesday 23rd March 2021. The evening consisted of hearing what is a PTA and its function within the school. We also covered what the benefits are of joining the PTA, and learning of ways that you can help or support our fundraising. Amongst all this we had games and prizes and a good night was had by all. The 2021 elected officers were appointed as follows; • Chairperson - Sandy Rothery • Deputy Chairperson - Ruth McLaren • Secretary - Dore Peters • Treasurer - Cheri Main Volunteers Needed for Second Hand Uniform Shop We are currently on the hunt for a volunteer to assist us with our second hand uniform sales. Our second hand uniform shop is open Thursdays from 8:15 - 8:45am and 2:45 - 3:15pm. No experience is necessary and full training is given. If you are able to help, please contact the PTA at pta@owairoa.school.nz Online Auction We are also planning to run an online auction in the last 2 weeks of Term 3 – we are currently seeking parents who have access to goods or services which could be auctioned off. Alternatively, if you would like to make a monetary donation which could go towards purchasing new items to be auctioned off, this would also be a great way to support the PTA’s fundraising. We also require parents who can help organise and help run this fundraiser. If you can assist in any way please contact pta@owairoa.school.nz • Friday 21 May – Sausage Sizzle. • Friday 11 June – School Disco. Upcoming • Friday 25 June – Sausage Sizzle.
