Term 1 Week 5 2021 Principals Award - Eli Eli is a wonderful student who strives to be kind to everyone he encounters. He always tackles his work head on, and tries his hardest to succeed in all his endeavours. When on the playground, Eli sets a superb example of our school’s PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best. He always has a big smile on his face, even when he is attempting those tricky tasks in class! Eli actively involves himself in all aspects of the classroom, and is always organised and ready to go each morning. Eli has taken on the role of a buddy with leadership and pride and sets a great example for all other Year 6 students. Congratulations Allan! Last week Kindergarten joined us for their first school assembly and all did a wonderful job participating in our weekly event. Allan has been reciting a beautiful Awabakal poem that he had learnt to a number of our staff and wanted to share his beautiful poem with his peers. Allan confidently walked onto stage with Mrs Dunn and without hesitation shared the poem he had learnt. A big congratulations Allan, this was such a big achievement for a student attending his first ever assembly. Crossroads PSSA Football Tryouts Good luck to Charlotte, Martin, Eden, Hayden and Harvey from Stage 3 as they will be trying out for the Crossroads PSSA football team on Thursday 4th March. We wish them all the best. Crossroads PSSA Rugby League A big congratulations to Cuban in Stage 3 who was selected to represent the Crossroads Rugby League Team. Cuban went to a tryout on Tuesday and was selected in a squad of 15 to go to the Hunter Rugby League Tryouts on the 11th March. Well done, Cuban! Swimming Carnival Last Monday, we braved the less than ideal weather conditions for a spectacular swimming carnival at Charlestown Pool. Congratulations to all students that participated in the day for their exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship. Zone Swimming Carnival Last Thursday, I was lucky enough to take 18 students to Speers Point Pool for the Zone Swimming Carnival. Again, the conditions weren’t great, but our students were fabulous representatives of our school. Many students placed highly in their events and should be very proud of their efforts.
Congratulations to our Senior Boys Relay Team (Harry, Hayden, Theo and Noah) and Hayden in the Senior Boys Backstroke who will be representing the Crossroads Zone at Hunter (Regional) on Tuesday, 2nd March. Garden Suburb Public School were again awarded the Handicap Point Score School Champions for the Zone Carnival and an enormous congratulations to Hayden who was awarded the Crossroads Senior Boys Champion. Good luck next week boys. Mrs Couch School Photos On Wednesday, 3rd March students will have their school photos taken. Please ensure all students arrive at school on time and are dressed in full school uniform. If students are unwell they must stay at home. In years prior to the COVID pandemic we have allowed students to pop in and have their photo taken when they have been unwell and then they have gone home. Due to the strict COVID restrictions placed on us we won’t be making any exceptions to this rule. Newsletter Our newsletters are distributed fortnightly and can be located on our Sentral Parent Portal. If you would like a paper copy of our newsletter sent home please contact the office. Arriving at School When students arrive at school they are required to sit quietly under the COLA until the play bell rings at 8.45am. The equipment under the COLA and the sandpit are not to be utilised before and after school. If students are arriving late to school or are being collected early, parents and carers are required to sign students in and out at the office. Parents and carers are asked to come to the office and not the students’ classrooms. General Permission Notes The annual General Permission notes went home this week. Can you please return these to school as soon as possible. Parent Information Sessions – Week 6 We will be holding Parent Information Sessions next week and will be staggering these sessions throughout the week. Parents and carers will be required to complete the school’s two part check in before heading to classrooms. We are asking that only one parent attends the session. Each session will commence at 4pm and will conclude at 4.30pm. Sessions will take place in your child’s classroom, all parents and carers will be required to be socially distanced at all times. There will be time to have a brief conversation with your child’s teacher however if you require any more than this please contact the office and make an appointment for a later date. Our Autism Support Classes have met with all parents and carers during our recent PLSP Meetings therefore there will not be an additional information session.

We are delighted to be able to have our Sentral messaging up and running however some staff are receiving in excess of six messages per day in regards to one student and this is not what this platform is designed for. If you have concerns about your child or would like to share some information you need to contact the office to make an appointment to see your child's teacher. To ensure our staff have a healthy work and home balance we have agreed that messages will be typically answered between 8am and 5pm. Please be mindful that these messages are also unlikely to be checked between 9.10am and 3.10pm as staff are teaching lessons. Staff may also take a few days to respond to your message. If a message needs to be given to your child please contact the school office on 49434898. Thank you for your understanding. Parent Portal School Calendar We are continually updating the parent calendar on the Sentral Parent Portal. Please look here for any upcoming events within the school. Attending the School Site - Parents and Carers Parents and Carers can continue to enter the school grounds for the following reasons: enter the school to purchase or pick-up uniforms from the uniform shop drop off students for Kindergarten and Years 1, 2 meet with school staff when attending an appointment Unfortunately there are a number of parents and carers entering our school grounds of a morning and afternoon who are not completing the two part COVID safe check in. This check in needs to be completed every time a community member comes into the school grounds. If this continues the school will consider locking the side gates and only having students, parents and carers enter through the front gate so that this can be monitored. The school is now issuing visitors with a visitor sticker once they have completed the sign in. Thank you to the parents and carers who continue to follow the correct procedures to ensure the safety of our students, staff and community.
Parent Volunteers at School The school is delighted to be having some parent volunteers back on site helping in the canteen. Please remember to complete the two part COVID check in. All visitors to the site will now be given a sticker so that staff can identify that the visitor has competed the required check in. Working with Children Check If you are able to give up some time to work around the school in classrooms, uniform shop, canteen or in the office, you will need to complete a Working with Children Check. It is a simple online form and when it is completed we will be notified. The form can be found at https://wwccheck.ccyp.nsw.gov.au/Applicants/Application#. Once your form is complete you need to take your form and your photo ID to the RMS and they will finalise your check. You will then receive your notification, usually within a few weeks, and this then needs to be given to the office so it can be stored on file. A Statutory Declaration will also need be completed when handing in your WWCC number to the office. Parents wanting to apply for a WWCC can use the school computer and printer. Please see the office staff if you require assistance with this process. Transporting Students – Private Vehicles If you are transporting another child to an event throughout the year it is a requirement that the school has a copy of your licence, registration papers, CTP Greenslip and your comprehensive insurance policy. The documents are a requirement regardless of whether the parental consent has been given to travel with the other parent. We often rely on parents to transport children so I ask that you provide the school with this information as soon as possible if there is a chance you may transport students throughout the year. If you have already provided these documents they are only required to be updated when there is a change such as your driver’s licence expires or your registration is renewed. Students will always require written permission from the parent or carer of the student being transported. Invoices This year our book packs will be $50 and can be paid online through the school website. Invoices will be sent out to families next week. Due to the financial impact that COVID had on many families we waived the fee in 2020 for all families. If you are still having difficulty paying this amount please contact the office. Stage 2 and Stage 3 Excursions Over the next few weeks notes will go out for our Stage 2 and Stage 3 school excursions. Students in Stage 2 will be heading off to the Great Aussie Bush Camp and our Stage 3 students will be visiting Canberra, an excursion that was cancelled last year due to COVID. The Canberra excursion still isn’t finalised as we are waiting to see if Questacon will reopen its bookings. Easter Hat Parade We are delighted to announce that we will be holding an Easter Hat Parade on Thursday, 1st April. Students need to make their hats at home and bring them to school on the day. The parade will commence at 9.30am. We will wait until closer to the event to inform the community of COVID restrictions around who can attend the parade. If parents need any support or ideas on how to make a hat please let your child’s teacher know.
Easter Hat Raffle Out of Uniform Day – Date to be advised To support the P&C’s Easter Raffle the school is holding an out of uniform day where students wear their casual clothes and bring in something to contribute to the Easter Raffle. One donation per family is adequate, we appreciate all donations received. Raffle tickets will be going home in the next week. If you need more booklets please let the office know and we will send more tickets home. P&C Meeting It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers at the P&C meeting last week. There were many discussions about things happening around our school and a big focus on how the P&C can continue to support the school through fundraising opportunities. Our next P&C Meeting will be held on Monday 15th March (Week 8) at 6.00pm in the library. At this meeting we will start with our Annual AGM followed by a General Meeting. The P&C will draw our Easter Raffle at the Easter Hat Parade on Thursday 1st April. Gates This year we have a large number of new students in our Mainstream classes and AU Support classes and some of these students are still getting used to the routines of school. We have made the decision to permanently keep the gate on Myall Road locked and all other gates will be locked at 9.10am. If you need to come into the school grounds can you please phone the office and we will come and let you in. Thank you for your understanding. Council Tree Concerns Progress Place There is a tree that the council will be removing from Progress Place in the coming months. The school has expressed concern as the tree has lost limbs with one recently falling on a parked car. Please walk with extreme caution in the area where the witches hats have been placed. If you have any further questions or concerns please contact the council.
Environment News School Clean Up Australia Day- Friday 5th March In class groups, students will clean up a designated area within the school grounds during class time. They will be supervised by their class teacher. Buckets and tongs will be provided. Students can wear a green shirt on the day and bring their own gardening gloves, not disposable gloves as we don't want to create more waste. I will audit the collected waste to see what is the most common found rubbish in our school and how we can possibly reduce this. Lets take care of our environment and take pride in our school. The Veggie Garden The veggie garden is thriving with the recent rain and warm days. We have a crop of corn, some golden nugget pumpkins and the Aliens planted a bed of lettuce. Happy gardening! Julie Brewer
Classroom News – Titans Here a few images of the Titans engaged in writing this morning. The Titans are focusing on 'setting the scene' in a Narrative using descriptive language. Today we explored our five senses to describe the setting. Classroom News - Astronauts Over the last week the 5/6 Astronauts have been exploring pop culture and have used Minecraft EDU combined with paint 3D to create a range of pixel art pieces based on various themes. Please use the QR code to see more of our wonderful students work.
Congratulations to all the winners, who were lucky enough to share a milkshake with Mrs Dunn this fortnight.
P & C News Hello School Community, We kicked off our first P&C meeting this year on a rainy wet evening, none the less it was lovely to see everyone and great to welcome so many parents, familiar and new. With our Principal, APs and teachers still shivering from the spectacular swimming carnival, we extend an extra thank you, your dedication and support is never lost on us parents! We are grateful for everyone’s input and as a result we have many activities and ideas brewing for the year. As you all are aware our Canteen is back in business with Donna, our new canteen manager. Welcome Donna. We are always grateful to our canteen volunteers and can always do with more help. If you would like to contribute and have some time to help out please enquire at the office. We are friendly bunch and no experience necessary! A big thank you to Michelle for all her work in the Uniform Shop, especially over the busy new year period. We also thank you, the school community for all your patience in waiting for orders. As you can appreciate, we can only keep a certain amount of stock, so a little reminder to pre- order or check out availability early will help us avoid disappointment. Something to look out for is our Easter Raffle coming up and a Hot Cross Bun Drive! We appreciate any donations and the communities’ support in all or any of our fundraising events. Our P&C loves to promote events that are fun for the kids. We are forever grateful for any support in any form. Our next P&C Meeting is 15 March 2021 and it’s the Annual General Meeting. We invite everyone interested to come along. Our meetings are a great way to find out what’s happening at the school and show your support. Catriona P&C President Uniform Shop The uniform shop currently has an abundance of quality second hand goods. Items are $2 each or $5 for tunics. We are happy to accept donations of second hand GSPS school uniforms provided they are in good condition. The uniform shop is open from 3.10pm – 3.30pm each Thursday.
