Preamble The following document has been prepared for the purpose of informing our faculty, staff, and parents, and guardians about the protocols Pilot School is implementing to address the current health and safety concerns associated with COVID-19. The safety of our students, staff, and faculty is our utmost concern and we are paying close attention to guidelines issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Delaware Department of Education (DOE), and the Delaware Department of Health (DDH). In accordance with these guidelines, Pilot School has heightened all of our procedures, adopting enhanced cleaning and sanitation regimens, revising drop-off and pick-up procedures, and limiting visitor policies, with the goal of ensuring a safe, healthy and sanitized campus. While we are closely following best practices, we also recognize that guidelines are continually changing as more is learned about COVID-19. At this point, we know that COVID-19 is a highly contagious airborne disease that is transmitted via respiratory droplets. Any interaction with other people cannot be risk free; but consistent with guidance from state and federal agencies, we are taking considerable action to minimize the risk of infection at the School. As there is still much unknown about COVID-19, we will adopt new recommended protocols as we learn more about this disease, medically and as an academic community. Any updates or revisions to these protocols will be shared with the School community on an ongoing basis.

Section 1: ARRIVAL and DISMISSAL PROTOCOLS A: ARRIVAL Using the MYMEDBOT app, all families will answer the following questions daily as posed by the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DDHSS). The app will be provided by Pilot School. Please watch for an email from MYMEDBOT regarding setting up your account. We will be using this app beginning the first day of school. Please answer the questions each school day by 7:00 A.M. The questions are: 1. In the past 14 days, have you been near (within 6 feet for at least 5 minutes) a person who has a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19, or have you had direct contact with their mucus or saliva? 2. In the last 48 hours, have you had any of the following symptoms? Fever of 100.4 F or above (or symptoms like alternating shivering and sweating) New cough New trouble breathing, shortness of breath or severe wheezing New chills or shaking with chills New muscle aches Sore throat Vomiting or diarrhea New loss of smell or taste, or a change in taste Headache Nausea Fatigue Congestion or runny nose with no other known cause (such as allergies) Drop off is between 7:30 A.M. and 8:00 A.M. We are implementing a staggered start to the school day as outlined below. If a family has children in two divisions, please drop both students at the designated time for drop off for the older child. Lower Division - Drop off time is 7:30 -7:40 All Lower Division families will use the innermost lane. Please pull all the way to the end of the lane. While the student is still in their car, a Pilot staff member will take each child’s temperature. If temperatures are below 100.4, the staff members will direct the student where to enter the building. All Lower Division students will enter through the side door by the recess area and go directly to their homerooms. 1
Middle Division - Drop off time is 7:40-7:50 All Middle Division families will use the middle lane. Please pull all the way to the end of the lane. While the student is still in their car, a Pilot staff member will take each child’s temperature. If temperatures are below 100.4, the staff members will direct the student where to enter the building. All Middle Division students will enter through the Lower Division dismissal door and go directly to their homerooms. Upper Division - Drop off time is 7:50-8:00 All Upper Division families will use the outermost lane. Please pull all the way to the end of the lane While the student is still in their car, a Pilot staff member will take each child’s temperature. If temperatures are below 100.4, the staff members will direct the student where to enter the building. All Upper Division students will enter through the main lobby doors and go directly to their homerooms. Outside all entrances, hand sanitizer will be provided for students and staff to use BEFORE entering the building. If you arrive after your designated drop off time, but before 8:00 A.M., please pull into a space in the front parking lot marked with an orange cone. We ask that you wait with your child in your car until a Pilot representative can take your child’s temperature. We will strictly adhere to the designated drop off times and will complete temperature taking for all three divisions before approaching the waiting families. Bus Before students get on the bus, parents will complete the health assessment via the MYMEDBOT app. In addition to your daily reporting via MYMEDBOT, your child’s temperature will be taken by a Pilot representative prior to your child coming into school. If the child’s temperature is elevated, they will be placed in our isolation room and sent home. Late Arrivals When a student arrives after the 8:00 A.M. drop off period, parents will complete the health assessment via the MYMEDBOT app. Parents are asked to phone reception (302-478-1740) and remain with their child in their vehicle until a school representative greets the student and takes their temperature. 2
Staff/Faculty All staff and faculty will complete the health assessment via the MYMEDBOT app. B. DISMISSAL All students will stay in their homerooms until their name is called for dismissal. Specials teachers will be available in the afternoon to ensure safety for students entering their cars. Lower Division: 2 staff members Full-day: 2:40 P.M. Half-day: 11:50 A.M. All Lower Division families will use the innermost lane. Middle Division: 2 staff members Full-day: 2:50 P.M. Half-day: 12:00 P.M. All Middle Division families will use the middle lane. Upper Division: 2 staff members Full-day: 3:00 P.M. Half-day: 12:10 P.M. All Upper Division families will use the outermost lane Bus When buses arrive, reception will walkie a staff member to dismiss children onto the bus. Section 2: NON-PILOT SCHOOL SCHOOL PERSONNEL A. VISITORS Only pre-registered visitors will be permitted in the school building. All visitors must make an appointment before coming into school. All visitors must wear a mask and be screened, upon arrival, by a school representative. Visitors will be kept to a minimum. Families are not permitted in the building except under extenuating circumstances based on school guidance. This includes families/parents dropping off “forgotten” items. They should be left outside the main doors. Visitors who MUST enter the building, are to wait outside the main door for a school representative to take their temperature and record their health assessment answers (i.e. contractors, workers). 3
B. CONFERENCES ZOOM conferences will be offered for all families meetings. Weather permitting, meetings may take place outside with adequate social distancing practices in place. Section 3: SIGNAGE Directional signs and 6 feet markers are placed in the main hallways and common areas. Signage about frequent hand washing, cough etiquette, and nose blowing are placed throughout the building. Section 4: CLEANING/SAFETY A. HAND WASHING/SANITIZING Students and teachers are to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer when entering or leaving a room. Gloves are not required except for custodial staff or teachers cleaning their classrooms. Gowns, hair coverings, and shoe covers are not required. B.FACE COVERINGS It is Pilot School’s policy that all visitors, faculty, staff, and students wear a mask while in our school building, during arrival and departure, and outside when social distancing can not be maintained. Students should be sent to school with a clean mask or face covering daily. Please provide at least 2 face masks per day. Please label the inside of each face mask. We recognize that “mask breaks” will be needed for students and teachers and will provide safe spaces to do this. C. CLASSROOMS AND CLASS SUPPLIES Pilot School has heightened all cleaning procedures. Frequently touched surfaces including lights, doors, benches, etc. will undergo cleaning with an EPA-approved disinfectant at least every two hours. While wearing gloves, teachers will wipe down light switches, doorknobs, and desks throughout the school day, as needed. Staff will wear PPE when performing all cleaning activities. Efforts will be made to minimize the sharing of materials between students. 4
Students will provide a case/container labeled with their name to ensure they are not sharing supplies such as markers, pencils, glue, scissors, calculators, rulers, etc. For use in outside settings, every student will provide a standard 6’ beach towel, labeled with the student’s name. Towels will go home daily to be cleaned. This is not a towel for use in the pool. In contrast to the supply list sent earlier, we ask that yoga mats not be used. Middle & Upper Division students are asked to bring in a lap desk for use in outdoor settings. The lap desks will be cleaned daily by the teacher and stored in the students’ locker. No workbooks, readers, texts, manipulatives will be shared. Over time, teachers may ask families to provide other items that are unshareable. Alternate spaces may be used for classroom instruction, including the Pit, the Mosie, Flex Room, Board Room and outdoor spaces. D. PUBLIC AREAS/BATHROOMS All bathrooms will be cleaned at an increased frequency throughout the day. Frequently touched areas, including handrails and doorknobs, will be disinfected every two hours throughout the school day. Section 5: SPACING AND MOVEMENT In full compliance with DOE, students and staff should maintain the recommended distance of 6 feet or greater between individuals and must maintain a minimum of 3 ft apart with face covering including when seated at desks or standing in classrooms. All desks will be arranged facing the same direction. Teachers should try to maintain six feet of spacing between themselves and students as much as possible. Hallways or corridors will flow in one direction only or, one direction on each side of the hallway with ample 6 feet of distance between students in a single file flow on each side. Floor markers are used to direct traffic flow. Staggered movements at incremental intervals will be used if feasible to minimize the number of persons in the hallways. 5
Section 6: COMMON GATHERINGS A. STAFF LOUNGE The staff lounge will be open with restricted use and with the intention no congregating or prolonged use. Staff may eat lunch in their classrooms or outdoors. B. OPENING Weekly school opening is an important part of the Pilot School community. If Pilot School learns of a COVID-19 case with someone who has been on campus, we will immediately notify Delaware’s Division of Public Health for a recommended course of action. Whether or not a part or all of the campus must be closed for a period of time after learning of a COVID-19 case is dependent upon many factors including levels of community transmission. The privacy of the individual will be respected and information will only be shared that aids in the protection of public health. Pilot School will notify families in the division where there is a confirmed positive case. If your child is considered a close contact, you will be notified by the Department of Health. 8
If a Student or Faculty Present with COVID-like Symptoms If a student or faculty present with COVID-like symptoms, we will follow DPH guidance protocols. 1. We have a room set aside for isolation of a sick child suspected of COVID-19. The family will be contacted to pick up their child immediately. 2. Pilot will follow CDC guidance for cleaning and disinfection. 3. Students/staff need a letter of clearance from their health care provider in order to return to school. 4. The sibling of a student with suspected COVID-like symptoms will also be sent home and needs to stay home until the sibling is cleared by a physician’s note. Keeping Your Child Home If a family keeps their child/children home with COVID-like symptoms, a physician’s note is required for them to return to school. Doctor’s Appointments. Children who have an appointment during the school day must notify the front office at the start of the day of the appointment. If the student is returning to school after the appointment, they must again be screened before entering the building. Medication. Please contact Mrs. Gorham (agorham@pilotschool.org) to make arrangements to drop off your child’s medication. Section 13: COVID TESTING A. FACULTY TESTING All faculty and staff will be tested for COVID-19 on a monthly basis through Vault Health. B. STUDENT TESTING All students are required to have a COVID test before the start of school. New Castle County is offering a testing program for students for the start of the school year. This test is being offered free of charge to any student at Pilot School, whether they are a Delaware resident or not. On the first day of school students should bring a printed copy of their results to share with the School Nurse, Amy Gorham. Pilot School is exploring testing options for students which can be used on an ongoing basis. 9
Section 14: SAFETY A. FIRE DRILLS Under present guidelines, fire drills can still be carried out and handled under COVID-19 guidelines. When on the field, classes and students will be separated by 6 feet and all students and staff will wear masks. B. HEIGHTENED SECURITY DRILLS At this time, we are not performing heightened security drills. Teachers will remain up-to-date and educated on protocols and procedures. Students will be educated on the procedures. Section 15: DEFINITIONS What is social distancing? According to the CDC, the definition of social distancing is “Social distancing, also called “physical distancing,” means keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household. To practice social or physical distancing, stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other people who are not from your household in both indoor and outdoor spaces. Social distancing should be practiced in combination with other everyday preventive actions to reduce the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks, avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands, and frequently washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.” Who is considered a close contact? According to the CDC, for COVID-19, a close contact is defined as any individual who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to positive specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.
