May I offer my heartiest congratulations to all students and staff on the manner in which classes have settled and commenced teaching and learning. As I spent time across all classes last week I was most impressed with the immediate attention students were focussing on their classroom studies. May I also express my sincere thanks to all parents and carers for ensuring each student is in their appropriate uniform and has all materials for school. Not one student was found to be out of uniform last week and I congratulate and thank our families for supporting our school expectations. Staffing News I have been informed that the Department have extended the Day 8 enrolment process to that of Day 13 for 2020 only. This extension across the State is primarily due to the impact flooding of schools in North Queensland and the Coronavirus has on some school communities. This effectively means that our staffing will now not be confirmed until Day 13. Student enrolment figures at this point would indicate that it is more than likely that we will maintain the numbers for 23 classes however this will only be confirmed after the State wide Day 13 enrolment collection. Today we welcomed Ms Sian Priest on Year 2/3 and hope that she will partner with Ms Tomson to complete the Part Time Teaching team for this class. School Parade We will commence our first School Parade this Wednesday. Parade will be held in the school hall from 2:30pm. School Banking School community members are reminded that school banking commences this Thursday. Banking day for students is only Thursday of each week.
From the Principal Parking As we begin another year school parking can be extremely busy. I would ask that all school community members please take extreme care when dropping off or picking up each day. The Sports complex car park is a popular and safe place to park if you choose to not park along Forest-Hill Fernvale Road or along the Brisbane Valley Highway. I must remind all school community members that there is a six zone drop off area in front of the school. There is literally a two minute zone and the driver is not permitted to leave the car parked in this location. It is drop off and go again. The administration car park is not for general parking or drop off/pick off. Unauthorised use of this area not only endangers the lives of children but is illegal without authorisation. Arrival and Departure at School No student should arrive to school prior to 8:15am. Any student arriving before 8:15am must move to the area under the old Administration building (now Peel House) and be seated. There are to be no students using the playground equipment or be in other areas around the school before 8:15am. Following the 3pm release bell, all students should be collected promptly by their parents or if travelling by bus, move to the bus line area. No student is to be left unsupervised playing on the playground equipment or on the grounds of the school. The school office closes at 3:30pm and should not be relied upon for supervision of students for late parent pickup. School Office Hours The School Office is open from 8am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday Student Absences All schools in Education Queensland are required to report any student absence on a daily basis and seek reasons for why that student is absent. Continued absences without explanation will now be more closely monitored and followed up on all occasions as per the new policy. All absences must be reported and this can be done via phone call to the school on 54271333 or the Student Absence line 54271300. If you have not informed the school of any absence, the school will automatically send an alert seeking a reason via SMS. This is a huge process to do on a daily basis but now mandated to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children. Telephone Numbers Student Absences: 5427 1360 The student absence line is available if you wish to leave a message that your child will be away. Please include reason why and what class your child is in without waiting for your call to be answered which may be more convenient to you. Kind Regards David
From the Deputy Principal What a wonderful start to 2020 at Fernvale! A huge thank you to all our parents and caregivers for a wonderful start to the year. Thank you for organising school uniforms, books and lunches and being really positive about returning to school. This year in Year 1 our two delightful girls who have received chemotherapy are settling in well to the new school year. Just a reminder that it is important in supporting our girls and in fact the health and wellbeing of all our children that you are aware of a number of considerations. Please note that your child is not at any risk. However, it is vital that if your child is unwell that you keep them home. Also if you or your child has or have been exposed to chicken pox please let the school know immediately. We thank you for your support and if you have any questions, please let me know. The past week has seen our children settle in to their routines and get back in to the ‘groove’ of school. It is perfectly normal however for children to be ‘unsettled’ with the change that a new school year brings. As they grow and develop, all children encounter situations where they feel worried, nervous and sometimes even scared. The beginning of the school year brings change for your child as they settle into a new environment and begin forming relationships with peers and school staff. This year across our whole school we are introducing Zones of Regulation. An information letter is attached giving you an outline of the Zones and tips of how you can support your child at home. Our first set of tools/strategies to explore are in this newsletter below. Please chat with your child’s teacher if you have any questions. This Wednesday, 5 February, is World Read Aloud Day. World Read Aloud Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of sharing stories by challenging people to grab a book, find and audience and read aloud. Our children and staff will be reading aloud at school but it is also a wonderful reminder to enjoy the love of books with your children at home. For more information click on the hyperlinked picture. Also commencing in our newsletter this week is an opportunity to get to know our lovely staff. Each week we will feature a new team. This week we are super excited for you to get to know our Prep Teaching Team. Our lovely Little Explorers Playgroup will recommence on Thursday 13 February at 9am. We look forward to welcoming all our families, old and new back in week 3. We are looking forward to another great week! Kylie
