ALL LANGUAGES AND ALL LEVELS Around the World Art Gallery Guidelines • All World Language students • Original artwork completed this school year • Paintings, Yarn Paintings, Pottery, Sculptures, Drawings • Include a brief description of your work • **Only 5 entries per teacher** Deadline The 5 submissions from each teacher must be submitted electronically to gkkeller@volusia.k12.fl.us by February 28th. The original piece should be brought to Festival for display on the afternoon of March 30th, retrieved by noon on March 31st. Display Artwork will be on display in the Cafeteria at Deland High School on Saturday, March 31st, 2018. Students may include contact information if they want to sell their submission. ALL LANGUAGES AND ALL LEVELS Guidelines • Student-created cultural bookmarks • All languages: Any aspect of a language's culture or language can be creatively incorporated • Bookmark MUST be of the following dimensions: 2" x 8" on medium weight/construction paper • All images on the bookmark must be student-created by hand. No sequins, sparkles, jewels, etc. allowed. • The bookmarks will be judged upon creativity, cultural subject matter, artistic value, and overall effect. Deadline 6 bookmarks/teacher may be submitted. Deadline to submit bookmarks: Feb. 28th, 2018 - Indicate student name, teacher, and school on back of bookmark Contest Submitted bookmarks will be displayed at the World Language Showcase with the Best of the Show indicated. ALL LANGUAGES, LEVEL 1 Guidelines • Student will draw an original layout to present his/her family tree • Any language, Level 1 • The family tree must have at least 8 different familial relationships depicted – imaginary relatives are acceptable. • Each relationship must have a hand- drawn representation of each person; each relationship will be hand-lettered in the target language, complete with correct spelling, the correct article and a name • The poster should be regular poster board sized, hand-drawn, may be colored or mono-chromatic. Deadline Teachers may submit 3 from each period for each different subject they are teaching. Posters must be submitted by Feb. 28th, 2018 to Deland High School. SPANISH 1 & 2, FRENCH 1 & 2 Guidelines • Students choose a specific topic/theme • All languages (teacher verifies linguistic accuracy) • Level 1 students should have 15 vocabulary words for the unit, and a picture for each word. • Level 2 students should have 20 vocabulary words for the unit, and a picture for each word. • Pictures may be hand drawn, magazine cutouts, or downloaded. Include an appropriate article, along with the word. • Write on the back of poster: name, teacher, language and level • In order to be judged, entries must be submitted according • to these guidelines. • Teachers may turn in 2 posters for each period they have for each subject. (Please check for guideline adherence.) • Posters must be submitted by Feb. 28th, 2018 @ SCHS. Contest • Posters will be displayed at the festival. • Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each level of each language. SPANISH II, III Guidelines • A story (fairytale, invent a different ending for a fairytale, original story) consisting of 4 sentences per page - 5 pages minimum, using the imperfect and the preterite tense in Spanish. Must have a picture, drawing, clip art, or magazine cut out for each page. Must use vocabulary learned in school (not from internet/translator). ALL LANGUAGES Guidelines Video • • Make a music video to a famous song in Spanish, or the language you are studying. Video may be you singing or doing a lipsync. musical • Video must be more than 1 minute but not exceed 5 minutes. • Student must be featured in video singing/acting. • Video will be judged by creativity,cultural context, and video's relevance to song. Deadline 4 entries per teacher Videos must be turned in on a flash drive or DVD. Deadline: February 28th Contest 1st, 2nd and 3rd place videos will be shown during the festival. SPANISH, JAPANESE, AND FRENCH ALL LEVELS Guidelines • This project consists of a student or group of students creating a video that is between three and 5 minutes in length that demonstrates vocabulary or a grammar point. Students in videos for Spanish/French/Japanese levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 and above will be judged separately. • The video must be presented completely in the target language. It must be submitted on a jump drive by Feb. 28th, 2018 Deadline Each teacher may enter three videos for each level. ALL LANGUAGES AND ALL LEVELS Global Awareness Tri-Fold display Guidelines • Participants research cultural and linguistic aspects of another country (or community), not necessarily limited to a community of the language studied • Present findings on a tri-fold poster board • Displays should include images and supporting written explanations (in English) concerning: geography (location and climate/terrain), language(s), traditional food, music, celebrations and dress. Consider including a web link or QR code to include music, video and/or language sample, so that spectators can have a multimedia and global educational experience. • Please note: 5 poster entries per teacher Event Tri-Fold displays should be delivered to DeLand High School on February 28th, 2018. ALL LANGUAGES AND ALL LEVELS Certamen: An international quiz bowl Guidelines • School teams of up to 4 students • Questions will be based on relatively common cultural knowledge and language. • Suggestion: teams should be comprised of as many languages as possible Event Deadline to submit your team from your school: February 28th, 2018. PLEASE NOTE: During the festival, if your team is not ready to compete during their round (i.e. participating in another event) then your team unfortunately will forfeit their right to compete in CERTAMEN. The full event will take place on Saturday, March 31st, 2018. Quiet spectators will be permitted at both the preliminary rounds and the final, which will take place on stage in the Auditorium at Deland High School. ALL LEVELS, ALL LANGUAGES Guidelines • Students will present different traditional dress from different cultures. • Event open for all levels and all languages • Students need to talk in target language about the country they represent, the story of the dress and for what occasion is used. • Presentation 2 minutes long. • Students must memorize their presentation and bring a copy to the judges in English. ALL LANGUAGES Find the karaoke song of your choice on YouTube. Songs must be in Spanish, French or Japanese and must be appropriate for an audience of school children, community members and families. E-mail the link for your song to Mr. Gellermann cdgeller@volusia.k12.fl.us before 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 for approval. May be performed as solo, duet or trio. Once song is approved, practice to your heart’s content and perform on day of Showcase – Saturday, March 31st, 2018. 1. Song choice, YouTube link, name of performer(s), school, class (level of language), teacher and grade level submitted to Mr. Gellermann before Wednesday, February 28th at midnight. Song choices will be approved within 5 days of submission. 2. Song to be performed on day of Showcase – Saturday, March 31st. Each school may have up to 5 entries total (a duet or trio is one entry). It is expected that all contestants will be present to perform on day of Showcase. 22
