Dear Applicant Re: Learning Mentor Thank you for your interest in our Learning Mentor post at Ninelands Primary School. We are a happy thriving school with a passion for creative teaching, outdoor learning and innovation. We work closely with our family of schools in Garforth and Kippax in addition to a wider range of schools as part of the Noctua Teaching Schools Alliance. We are looking for highly able, dedicated and inspirational Learning Mentor to join our successful and caring team at Ninelands Primary School. The successful candidate will provide expertise, support and guidance to refocus children who may be experiencing difficulties due to social, emotional or behavioural issues, back on to their learning. Despite being the largest Primary School in Garforth, we are a friendly, close and supportive staff who work well as a team. Our Governing Body is knowledgeable, efficient and focussed on raising standards and is incredibly supportive of the school. We have an active PTA, the Friends of Ninelands, who raise considerable funds for the school and have an excellent relationship with the school leadership. In short, Ninelands is an exciting, happy and stimulating place to work, and a good prospect for anyone looking to further their career. Vacancy Advert Learning Mentor Salary Range C1 Scale Point 12 -17 £22,183 to £24,491FTE (Actual £18,613 to £20,550) Term Time Only Monday – Friday 32.5 hrs per week, permanent The Governors wish to recruit a highly able, dedicated and inspirational Learning Mentor to join our successful and caring team at Ninelands Primary School in Garforth. The post is permanent, full-time and starts on 1st January 2021. The successful candidate will provide expertise, support and guidance to refocus children who may be experiencing difficulties due to social, emotional or behavioural issues, back on to their learning. Ninelands prides itself on developing the whole child, and so part of the role will be around children’s mental wellbeing and family engagement. Ninelands Primary School is a popular and vibrant school with an excellent reputation in the local community. We have 437 children on role, a large nursery and in-house wrap around care. Ninelands is a partner within the NOCTUA Teaching Alliance and also a member of the Garforth Cluster of schools which includes Extended Services and family support. In October 2017 Ninelands achieved a ‘Good’ grade from Ofsted. Job Description Service Area Teaching Support Job Title Learning Mentor Level 2 Grade C1 12 - 17 Responsible to Headteacher Responsible for No line management responsibilities Job Purpose: To address barriers to learning for a targeted group of individual pupils in order to enable them to achieve their full potential. Developing and implementing study support and out of school activities. Responsibilities 1. Liaising with teaching staff to provide particular support to targeted pupils to raise achievement and provide support to enable them to overcome barriers to learning. 2. Work as a team with subject leaders, team leaders, pastoral staff and other members of school staff in order to assess individual needs of each targeted pupil. 3. Identification of those pupils who need extra help to overcome barriers to learning inside and outside school. 4. Support the development and implementation of individual action plans for targeted pupils who need particular support. 5. To develop a 1:1 relationship with pupils requiring particular support with the aim of addressing points defined in the action plan and engaging them with activities and opportunities. 6. To promote and monitor good attendance of pupils in school. 7. Undertake home – school liaison activities, including home visits, in order to keep parents / carers informed and to secure positive family support and involvement. 8. Monitor the implementation of all plans and provide feedback to the pupils of progress and achievement. 9. Use knowledge of the range of activities, courses, opportunities and organisations available that can be utilised to provide extra support for pupils. 10. Develop a range of study support activities such as visits to study support centres, homework and after school clubs that clearly address the specific needs of identified pupils and support the actions detailed within individual action plans. 11. Maintain accurate records and prepare written reports and evaluations. 12. Support and develop with transition arrangements for pupils entering / leaving the school. e.g. complete pupil risk assessments. 13. Support the development / implementation of activities to encourage family / carer involvement within school. 9
14. Liaison with external agencies, such as health professionals and Attendance Improvement Officers to support pupils. 15. To participate in appraisal, training and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills. 16. To improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and CPD programmes. 17. To work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice. 18. Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the school by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested. 19. Be aware of and comply with school and Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g. child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person. 20. Be aware of and support difference and ensure equality for all working in an anti-discriminatory manner, upholding and promoting the standards and equal opportunities of the school and Leeds City Council. 21. Recognise and appropriately challenge any incidents of racism, bullying, harassment or victimisation and any form of abuse of equal opportunities, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures and making sure the individual/s involved understand it is unacceptable. 22. Be a proactive member of the inclusion team. 23. Monitor patterns of behaviour through our classroom warning system and liaise with the Pastoral Leader to collate and plan action. 24. Key Skills and Competencies ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: It is essential that the Candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post within the context of the specific role duties and responsibilities: Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate on the application form that they meet all the essential requirements Method of Assessment will be through one or more of the following Application Form, Test, Interview, and Certificate Skills Required • An ability to communicate effectively with pupils, parents, carers and multi agencies. • An ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. • Good organisation, time management, communication and interpersonal skills. • Good research and planning skills. • The ability to liaise with and gain the confidence of all school staff. • Good ICT skills. • The ability to work flexibly. • The ability to produce detailed, concise evaluative reports of the programme. • The ability to promote the enjoyment, engagement and success of pupils. Knowledge Required • Knowledge of the principles involved in giving advice and guidance to children including the place of confidentiality and sharing information. • A clear understanding of the factors which lead to educational disaffection in children. • Knowledge and understanding of strategies to remove barriers to learning in children. • Knowledge of a variety of behaviour strategies. Experience Required • Experience of working with children aged 3-11. • Proven track record of successfully working with disaffected children.
