St. Charles Juniors Participate in OSU's Student Research Leadership Collaborative Sponsored by the Colleges of Education and Human Ecology, this program, which meets each month virtually, provides an opportunity to bring students together from multiple school districts, representing a diverse population of students working together in a structured format to produce real change. Kristen Dickerson, College and School Counselor for Sophomores and Juniors, moderates the group of four juniors participating this year: Kellen Karas '22 (St. Agatha School, St. Agatha Parish), Trenton Wells ’22 (Indianola Informal School, Resurrection Power Church of God), Andrew Huffman ’22 (St. Pius X School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish) and Anish Gupta ’22 (Phoenix Middle School). She pointed out many reasons she sought to get involved in this program. “Our students have the opportunity to identify an issue in our school that relates to social justice and come up with a creative way to solve the problem. They not only get to collaborate together, but also get to collaborate with other students in Central Ohio school districts. Moving forward, they will utilize a research project, including surveys, to find a creative way to improve our school. Although we wish the program was in person, we are thankful to have the opportunity." Program moderator, Dr. Keith Bell of OSU, noted that "these kids have not had an opportunity to talk about the things they are going through and this provides an opportunity to connect with students from across districts that are similar and very different from their own." "People can be proactive or reactive to problems," he said. Students can be taught how to teach others and be a role models to peers on how to bring issues to the table to be heard. "Often students don’t feel like their thoughts and opinions are being listed to or acted upon, Bell said. Aurnou-Rhees '22 To Compete in Summer Olympic Swimming Trial Junior Spencer Aurnou-Rees qualified for the Olympic Trials next June in Nebraska by swimming the 200 Individual Medley in a 204.01 at the Toyota US Open in Indianapolis in November. The last weekend in March, Spencer swam at the Speedo Sectionals at Elkhart Indiana, winning two bronze medals, one in 200IM and one in 200 Freestyle. He was the only high school swimmer in those two finals as the other competitors were college swimmers. Spencer, only a junior, has committed to swim for the University of Texas, currently the 2nd ranked team in the nation. Previously Spencer qualified for and swam at Summer Junior Nationals at
Stanford and Winter Nationals in Atlanta. In February, he helped lead the St. Charles Swim Team to a 5th Place finish at the Division I State Swimming and Diving Meet, finishing as state runner-up in the 100 Yard Freestyle & 3rd in the 200 Yard Freestyle. He was also a member of the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay Team which finished on the podium in 3rd place and on the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay Team that finished 6th. He was just named the St. Charles’ Most Valuable Swimmer for the 2nd straight year and was named High School All-American in the 100 and 200 Freestyles. Good luck!!! More Winter News A team of St. Charles juniors won the First Annual Central Ohio Miniature Bridge Building Competition February 20th, with its arched- design (photo/bottom left) rating first in both the load-to-weight ratio efficiency as well as aesthetics categories. The Cardinals faced 12 other high school teams from across Franklin County, including a second SC team of classmates which finished 5th in the competition. There were also two teams from The Ohio State University. Winning team members (see photo, above right, from left) were Andrew Huffman ’22 (Captain) (St. Pius X School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish), Luke Knueve ’22 (St. Timothy School, St. Timothy Parish), Andrew Gilmartin ’22 (St. Paul School, St. Paul Parish), and Austin Barnhart ’22 (Genoa Middle School, St. John Neumann Parish). Students were required to research, design and build a bridge to given specifications using only balsa wood and glue. The objective was to build a structure with the highest load-to-weight ratio over a predetermined span using materials supplied. Bridges were weighed and load-to-weight ratios were determined as weights were gradually added to a feed bucket attached to the middle of the roadbed of the bridge until the structure collapsed. The St. Charles Chess Club Team won the '21 Columbus High School Chess League Championship on March 2nd, besting 9 other teams. This marked the first year that St. Charles placed first in the league, topping Bexley (2nd place) and Centennial (3rd). The accolades continued a few days later when Pema, who went 11- 0 at the team competition, represented the Cardinals at the Columbus High School Individual Chess Championship…and won the event! This was an on-line chess tournament in which the best player from each of the 10 teams in the league competed in a single-elimination knockout format. After a first-round bye as the #1 seed, Brady went 3-0 to win the title. Congratulations to Owen Karas ’21 (St. Agatha School, St. Agatha Parish) who won the 1-Mile event at the Division I State Indoor Track Meet in Geneva, OH, in early March. In addition to his state championship performance, he placed 4th in the 800m and finished 5th in the 2-mile event. Owen is the first Division I runner in history to place in the Top 5 in all three of these events at this meet. Earlier this fall, Owen earned a trip to the State Cross Country Meet after a runner-up finish at the DI Districts and 3 rd at the regional meet. Congrats to our St. Charles Swim Team for placing 5th at the Division I State Championships – the team’s highest finish since placing 3rd in 2017. Cardinal swimmers, who won their 22nd straight CCL championship this year, included (in photo, from left): Will Elsrod ’21 (Olentangy Hyatt Middle School), Wil Borchers ’21 (Lakeview Jr. High School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish), Sean Noonan ’21 (St. Cecilia School, St. Cecilia Parish), Luke Rakowsky

Aurnou-Rhees finished as state runner-up in the 100 Yard Freestyle & 3rd in the 200 Yard Freestyle. He was also a member of the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay Team (that included Rakowsky, Bateman and Stevenson) which finished on the podium in 3rd place and on the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay Team (which included Bateman, Stevenson and Noonan) that finished 6th. Stevenson placed 9th in the 100 Yard Freestyle and 11th in the 50 Yard Freestyle. Elsrod finished 11th in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. The 200 Yard Medley Relay Team (Elsrod, List, Noonan and Rakowsky) finished 7th in the state. In addition to the Swim Team Winning its 22nd consecutive Central Catholic league championship, two other winter programs did the same. The Varsity Basketball Team won its second consecutive CCL championship by going 6-2 in the CCL, finishing ahead of runner-up St. Francis DeSales (5-3). It ended the year with a 10-7 record. The 16th-seeded Cardinals lost 59-54 at 14th-seeded Olentangy on Feb. 26 in the second round of the Division I district tournament. The Varsity Hockey Team, 2021 CCL champs, lost 1-0 to second-seeded Upper Arlington in the district final March 6 at OhioHealth Ice Haus, one step short of making the Final-Four in the state tournament. The Cardinals finished 20-7-1 overall and won the CHC-Red Division at 12-2-1 with 25 points, finishing ahead of second-place UA (24 points, 11-3-0-2).
