showcase Wednesday, June 15, 2022 11 Arts + Entertainment in Iron County Cruising into Summer with nostalgia and a good movie H ow can you talk about summer without talking about movies? That would be like talking about summer without mentioning popsicles or baseball. Movies have a way of distracting us, empowering us, and uniting us. I love movies, and I love memories. I grew up watching John Wayne movies with my dad and Doris Day and Rock Hudson movies with my mom; the first movie I watched with my husband was Dances with Wolves in the Winter of 1990. I have three very specific memories of movie watching in Cedar City from my youth. My first one was in the fall of 1978. I was barely four years old, and I have just snippets of a memory of watching Puff the Magic Dragon in the historic theatre on Main Street. I can still smell the popcorn, see the red carpet and gold wallpaper. Incidentally, this theatre first opened its doors in 1914 on Cedar City’s Main Street and was known as the Thorley Theatre. The theatre went through a series of name and owner changes until in 2015 its doors were closed permanently. My second movie memory took place at the old Cedar City Hyland Drive-In. This Drive-In movie opened its doors in 1953 by the Yergensen Brothers. It had a car capacity of 300 and was located at 1106 N. Knoll Street (near present Cedar City Motor getty images Company).
