    Washington, D.C. — Senator
Mike Lee’s (R-UT) bill renaming
the Provo Veterans Center after the

signed into law today by President
Biden. Col. Halvorsen is affectionately
referred to as the ‘Candy Bomber’
for his unique and effective efforts
distributing candy to the impov-
erished children of Berlin during
the 1948 Berlin Airlift. Halvorsen’s
compassion, humanitarianism, and
community service did not end
in 1948. He dedicated much of his
life to serving children, promoting
diplomacy between the United States
and Germany, and regularly partic-
ipated in community celebrations
and re-enactments of the Candy
Bombing of the Berlin Airlift. While
Halvorsen died in February of this
year, his legacy continues through the
Utah-based Gail S. Halvorsen Aviation
Education Foundation.

The term “downwinder” is used to describe those
people who were exposed to radioactive fallout in
Arizona, Nevada, and Utah during the nuclear testing
at the Nevada Test Site in the 1950’s and 1962.

       Cruising into Summer
with nostalgia and a good movie
H ow can you talk about
          summer without talking
          about movies? That would be
like talking about summer without
mentioning popsicles or baseball.
Movies have a way of distracting us,
empowering us, and uniting us. I love
movies, and I love memories. I grew
up watching John Wayne movies
with my dad and Doris Day and
Rock Hudson movies with my mom;
the first movie I watched with my
husband was Dances with Wolves in
the Winter of 1990. I have three very
specific memories of movie watching
in Cedar City from my youth.
My first one was in the fall of 1978.
I was barely four years old, and I have
just snippets of a memory of watching
Puff the Magic Dragon in the historic
theatre on Main Street. I can still
smell the popcorn, see the red carpet
and gold wallpaper. Incidentally, this
theatre first opened its doors in 1914
on Cedar City’s Main Street and was
known as the Thorley Theatre. The
theatre went through a series of name
and owner changes until in 2015 its
doors were closed permanently.
    My second movie memory took
place at the old Cedar City
Hyland Drive-In. This
Drive-In movie opened
its doors in 1953 by the
Yergensen Brothers. It
had a car capacity of 300
and was located at 1106
