WHAT'S NEW IN 2020 NEW SEASON, NEW CHALLENGES I f I may modify a phrase from Shakespeare we are all living through a spring of our utter discontent. The Cono-19 virus stalks the country overshadow- ing what should be a season of hope and life with indiscriminate death and despair. As part of the epi- center the East End is firmly in the eye of this storm. And it is changing the shape and scope of the most important few months of year here like no other event. As we go to press we hope the current NY State PAUSE will begin to lift and allow a semblance of nor- malcy to creep back into view. At best that looks to begin mid-June. While we wait much of the area plans how to offer you a summer’s worth of enjoyment and reprieve under these challenging circumstances. We are a resourceful lot and will find ways to do that. For now there are things to bear in mind. MEMORIAL DAY Let’s start with the traditional opening event of the season. Memorial Day weekend has always been a pivotal point on the East End calendar. An All-Amer- ican day marked with parades and speeches honor- ing those who have served and those who have fallen. When I was a Boy Scout I marched in the annual East Hampton parade. WHAT'S NEW IN 2020 performances. The most ambitious discussed so far is Bay Street’s hope to host a 4-6 week season of staged readings at a public space in Sag Harbor. Discussions to use the new John Steinbeck Park on the waterfront next to 7-11 have been held but so far nothing has been inked. One new institution many were looking forward to with great expectation was the opening of the SAG HARBOR ARTS CINEMA. Lost to a fire three winters ago the old movie hall was almost ready to take the wraps off its complete rebuilding this April. Patrons would have walked into a virtual shrine to cinema, three stories filled with state-of-the-art screening rooms, meeting and conference space, a ground floor café and third story catering space. A $15 million dol- lar addition to the local arts scene its opening is now on indefinite hold. One thing is for certain. There is a will to have the arts survive this pandemic. Ad where there is a will well, there will be some way forward. It won’t be 300 people sitting in Bay Street but performances will hap- pen this summer. EAST END PARKS & BEACHES E ver since the first stay-at-home orders were given people have been looking for safe ac- tivities and space. No wonder the many local Parks have seen record use. So much some have been closed or restricted for periods or times. That’s particularly true of local beaches. Where better to drop your guard and your face mask/covering and breathe fresh air? Let the kids roam? Take the dog off the leash? It all makes so much sense. Until you begin to see crowds that look like Coney Island on Fourth of July at Main Beach in May.
