IN THE HOOP PUBLISHED ON 2/25/2021 ISSUE 11 Panther Boys Crowned Champs Congratulations to our Varsity boys team on being crowned Region Champions and being invited to the State Playoffs in which has not been done in over a decade and now our Panthers have made their presence known in SCISA. The Panther’s are here to STAY! !! Our Varsity boys finished the season on a high note with a bid to the State Tournament. Although we fell short it was a great experience for all of our players to see a different level of team and gives us an idea of the work we need to put in in order to compete at that level. David Elam led us in scoring with 21 pts, Ashton Stroud 10 points and our newest member of the school and team James Timmons marked the books with a high arcing 3 pointer. We are very proud of all the hard work and dedication the boys put in this season and we look forward to continued growth. (WE ARE MEAD HALL)! Congratulations on a FLAWLESS season as our Middle School boys dominated the SCISA regular season league finishing in 1st place while also dominating the AAMSL regular season finishing in 1st place as well. The boys worked and prepared all season and deserved everything this season. Coach Grant and Coach Hilton appreciated everyone coming in day after day practicing hard and coming together as a team to put a STAMP on a dual CHAMPIONSHIP season! MEEEEAD HAAAALLL! Panther Boys Named Top State Players Ashton Stroud & Wyatt Geitner David Elam SCISA All-Region SCISA Region IV PLAYER OF THE YEAR Two Lady Panthers Named All-Region Two Varsity Girls players have been named as "All- Region" for this season. Congratulations to both Catherine Abbott and Esther Marks for earning this honor! The Varsity Girls team continued to learn and develop through adversity this year. With our team primarily composed of 9th graders, we continued to battle hard against older teams. These young ladies have continued to practice hard over the past 2 ½ months, despite only having had 4 Catherine Abbott games this whole season, with 2 of the games were back-to- SCISA All-Region back against (South Aiken Baptist and Curtis Baptist). Our Lady Panthers continued to give effort throughout the game, regardless of the score, hustling after loose balls, competing for rebounds, playing physical defense, and pushing the ball up the floor on offense. These are the foundations which will build this team for the future. While the outcomes of the games do not reflect the effort, individually and collectively the girls are Esther Marks improving as a team. SCISA All-Region FEBRUARY 25, 2021 PAGE | 02

Congratulations to Coach Tiffany Boyd and our Cheerleaders for all the hard work and dedication put in this season. Our teams felt well supported having you all cheering on the side as our teams were recording victories. Awesome Job Panthers! FEBRUARY 25, 2021 PAGE | 03
MS GIRLS NET TWO MAJOR WINS On Tuesday, January 19, the girls got their first win of the season with a substantial 25-11 victory over the St. Mary’s “B” team. Led by Hyatt Wilhelm’s 9 points and Charlie Farmer’s 6 points, 7 of the girls scored points in the game. All of them played significant minutes and made solid contributions. Thursday’s game against Augusta Christian did not go quite as well, but the girls fought hard throughout the contest and were led by Avery Abrams 6 points. On Monday, January 25, the girls lost a heartbreaker to Alleluia 12 – 16. Hyatt Wilhelm, Malia Pemberton, and Kendall Doolittle were our scorers in the game, but hard defensive effort by the team almost put us on top. On Thursday, the girls used what they learned from Monday’s loss to get their first “A” team win of the season against CCA, 20-19. Inspired by a very vocal crowd, the girls had to fight back from at least six points down at one point in the second half to take the lead late in the game, and then continue to fight to hold off CCA. Scorers included Hyatt Wilhelm (6), Malia Pemberton (5), Charlie Farmer (2), Avery Abrams (2), Kendall Starks (2), Eliza Farris Connor (2), and Darla Stanley (1). Carly Brown, Lucy Arvizu, and Anrei Delariarte provided aggressive defensive effort as well. On Friday, the girls were not able to overcome their exhaustion from the emotional win of Friday, as a very good Curtis Baptist team won the game. This in no way overshadows the huge accomplishment of our team of primarily 5th and 6th grade girls getting their first “A” team win. FEBRUARY 25, 2021 PAGE | 04
Merritt Strikes State Congratulations to Robin Merritt on representing Mead Hall in the State Bowling competition! Robin continues to remind our league that Mead Hall can Bowl! We are looking for others to join Robin to represent our school as we can place a team in State Competition. Great Job, Robin! Meet Our New MS Soccer Coach Hello Mead Hall Community, My name is Jake Harrington, and I am excited to be stepping into the role of Mead Hall’s middle school soccer coach for this spring season. I am a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina and am currently taking graduate courses online toward an MS in Oceanography through the University of Rhode Island. Taking classes from home this year has also allowed me to frequently work as a substitute teacher at Mead Hall on both the lower and upper school campuses. My ties to Mead Hall and Aiken Prep, as well as the sport of soccer, run deep. I graduated from Mead Hall in 2016, where I played soccer (as well as just about every other sport offered by the school) and was named a SCISA all-region soccer player my Junior and Senior years as well as Mead Hall’s Varsity Athlete of the year my Senior year. I am especially excited to be coaching on the APS campus because I am carrying on somewhat of a family legacy. My father, Rob Harrington, was a soccer coach and PE teacher at Aiken Prep/Mead Hall for more than a decade; my Grandfather, Bob Harrington, was a headmaster of Aiken Prep as well as its tennis coach for many years; and my great-grandfather, Harold Fletcher (for whom our upper school soccerfield “Fletcher Field” is named), was also a headmaster of Aiken Prep as well as an all-American soccer player. I look forward to having a fun and productive season! Middle school practices will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:45 – 5:15. Best, Jake Harrington FEBRUARY 25, 2021 PAGE | 05
