Next Week at Hill West Key Question: What was so revolutionary about the industrial revolution? Key Text for Linked Learning: Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens Linked Learning: English, History This week in History, children will be learning about the key features of a Victorian society. In which, they will explore the reign of Queen Victoria, the British Empire, how the industrial revolution began and the resulting population increase – and its consequence on living conditions and crime. Linking to their work in History, in English lessons, children will read the story of Oliver Twist and what life could have been like for children during the Victorian era. They will explore life in the workhouses and empathise with characters. Helping them build their contextual vocabulary, which will be used when writing a diary entry next week. Also, to get a sense of setting, using the grammatical devices they have been taught so far this year, they will write a short setting description of London in 1837. Maths: This week in maths children will be looking at, and comparing, decimals, percentages and their relationships to fractions. They will learn to convert fractions to equivalent fractions where the denominator is 100 in order to find the percentage equivalent. Science: In Science, children will continue learning about Evolution and inheritance and how human beings have evolved over time. They will identify adaptive traits in humans as a species, describe the known stages of human evolution and compare modern humans with members of the same genus and family. Humanities: See above.
