HIGH SCHOOL WEST 2021-22 EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
DESCRIPTION OF CLUB/ACTIVITY ADVISOR/Email CLUB/ACTIVITY To promote awareness of Black history for High School Ms. J. Simpson West and the HHH Community. We will begin virtual African American Student jsimpson@hhh.k12.ny.us zoom meetings for the 20-21 school year. We will discuss Organization (AASO) options for directing our annual Black History Month educational show. Ms. J. Nourry jnourry@hhh.k12.ny.us Members will have an opportunity to beautify the school Ms. A. Montiglio and further their appreciation of art. Inspire and recognize Art Honor Society amontiglio@hhh.k12.ny.us students who have shown outstanding ability in art. Students also complete 10 hours of community service. To provide students with a creative, comfortable TBD Arts and Crafts atmosphere to learn and create crafts that can be worn, useful, and decorative. Provide an opportunity to meet and interact with other Mr. T. Lamb Asian students and participate in cultural events outside of Asian Club tlamb@hhh.k12.ny.us in-school meetings. Celebrate Asian Culture; educate school community about Asia. Engage in fundraising for charitable works. Ms. K. DiPietro High School student athletes deliver lessons on healthy Athletes Helping Athletes kdipietro@hhh.k12.ny.us lifestyles. Athletes teach positive lifestyle to elementary (AHA) Ms. A. Nocco students. anocco@hhh.k12.ny.us This is an advanced vocal group with a focus on jazz Ms. M. Martufi literature. This style includes Swing, Latin, ballads and Blue Notes (Half Tones) mmartufi@hhh.k12.ny.us improvisation. Students will perform at concerts, festivals and competitions throughout the year. Admission into the group is by audition only. The bookstore is open every day. Members learn Mr. T. Vierling Bookstore (School Store) inventory, sales, ordering, bookkeeping and many other tvierling@hhh.k12.ny.us skills needed to run a business. To compete in Academic Quiz Bowl Competitions Ms. P. Fox Brainstormers throughout the year. Yale University, Princeton, Duke, pfox@hhh.k12.ny.us Rutgers are some of the planned events. The club will include those who want to learn the game as Mr. M. Maroney Chess Club well as those who are already skilled enough to participate mmaroney@hhh.k12.ny.us in tournaments with other high schools. This club will foster students’ interest in and understanding of Chinese culture through exposure to Ms. L. Reitz Chinese food, films, music and art. Student will also do Chinese Culture Club lreitz@hhh.k12.ny.us arts and crafts, skits, and other activities to stimulate their creativity while becoming a part of Chinese culture. Alternating Weds, 2:10pm Room 900 @ HSE The Chinese Honor Society provides the advanced Chinese student with rich cultural experiences such as cooking, literacy, drama, film making, arts and crafts, fundraising and so on. Membership is open to students Ms. L. Reitz Chinese Honor Society who have met the academic requirements of the Honor lreitz@hhh.k12.ny.us Society. Students must have an overall 90 average for the previous school year and the school year to date with a completed application process. Students may apply if they are in 10th Grade or higher.
Current and new members participate in an induction ceremony held in late spring. Alternating Wednesdays, 2:10pm, Room 900 @ HSE Ms. G. The Cross Campus Chamber Choir is an advanced mixed choral ensemble of musicians from HSE and HSW. Dr. D. McRoy Admission into the group is by audition only. The group performs at two concerts yearly, as well as special district and outside events. Enrollment in music class is required. The Wind ensemble strives to educate not only the students of HHH, but also the community of audience members locally and beyond on the wind ensemble as a vehicle for exciting, high caliber performance. This is Mr. R. Belanich Cross Campus accomplished through engaging and interactive (HSE) Wind Ensemble performances and with special programs throughout the rbelanich@hhh.k12.ny.us year. Admission into the group is by audition only. Students must be nominated by their school music teacher to be eligible for an audition. Enrollment in music class is required. NY DECA helps students develop skills and competence DECA TBD for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community experience. Ms. A. Mastrocco Members are focused on becoming more aware of issues Environmental Club amastrocco@hhh.k12.ny.us that face our community, school and the world. The club will work toward making a difference globally. E-sports/Computer Club: Club members will be able to explore many different aspects of current technology. Members can start to learn how to code in Mr. M. Maroney their choice of coding languages such as Java or E-Sports/Computer Club mmaroney@hhh.k12.ny.us Python. For those members that like gaming we are starting an E-sports team to compete in the High School E- sports League competing against other High Schools in games like Overwatch, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ms. C. Lislevatn A competition team composed of students who make a Euro Challenge Team clislevatn@hhh.k12.ny.us presentation of 15 minutes and a question and answer period of 10 minutes. Activities include games, sports, arts and crafts, cooking, etc.
Ms. J. Houston The mission of GSA is to create a safe environment in Gay Straight Alliance jhouston@hhh.k12.ny.us school for students to support each other and learn about (GSA) homophobia and other oppressions. Ms. O. Militana To provide a spa service for senior citizens in our Glamour Gals omilitana@hhh.k12.ny.us community. The mission of Hills West Media is to provide both school and local news to the students of HSW and the HHH community. We are By and For the Students of Hills West. The club’s main goal is to provide Hills West Mr. D. Riccuiti students with monthly printed newspapers/magazines, a driccuiti@hhh.k12.ny.us weekly printed Story of Week, a regularly updated website Hills West Media Mr.P. Doxsee (hillswestroundup.com), weekly podcasting, social media pdoxsee@hhh.k12.ny.us coverage, and special broadcasting events on our Youtube page (West TV). Students acquire real-life skills as they work together to complete their ultimate goal of engaging sophisticated media. Students are also rewarded with rich and meaningful peer relationships, which is the cornerstone of the Hills West Media experience. Ms.M. To encourage a greater appreciation and understanding of Italian Club Ms. A.Terracina Italian culture as well as its impact on our society through Honor Society aterracina@hhh.k12.ny.us cultural activities taking place in our area. The purpose of the Jazz Band is to provide a high level performance opportunity for student musicians who wish to explore the jazz medium. The group is open to students in grades 9-12 who are current music department members Mr. C. Foti based on a live audition. The group will explore multiple Jazz Band cfoti@hhh.k12.ny.us styles of jazz, including swing, rock, Latin and funk. A strong emphasis on note reading in multiple styles, improvisation skills, jazz combo work, advanced musicianship and performance strategies are explored, and advance individual instrument technique will be provided to assist in the development of the jazz student. Collect food and supplies for the needy. This club will provide students with hands-on activities that incorporate a variety of skills including leisure, technological, social, problem solving, self-care, and Lifeskills TBD listening skills. During this club the students will be encouraged to collaborate with their peers and identify interests through exploration. Mr. C. Peer Aids Educators is a student run and teacher advised club. Students are taught valuable and current information about HIV/AIDS and then create games and activities to do with the 9th grade classes, and a yearly trip to Candlewood Middle school to the 7th graders. The information taught is factual information about the transmission and prevention of HIV. Students joining this Ms. N. Curry club must attend on a regular basis, as they need to Peer Aids Educators ncurry@hhh.k12.ny.us practice until they are ready to go in front of their peers and the younger students. This club is a great opportunity for students going into education or community health to work on public speaking skills and have a great time while doing it. Many students in the past have written college essays about their experience in this club and how it prepared them to speak in front of any audience. Mr. D. Riccuiti Students will create and prepare work for local contests, driccuiti@hhh.k12.ny.us Photojournalism Club the district art show and pursue self-directed projects for Ms. J. We know there are a variety of behaviors that teens can engage in that can hurt them and others. Some topics the club discusses are drinking and driving, texting and driving, peer pressure, negative relationships, and mental Ms. N. Curry health, to name a few. SADD is a division on a national SADD ncurry@hhh.k12.ny.us organization, MADD, and part of the club works to raise money for that organization and people in the US whose lives have been affected by drunk driving. The goals of SADD are to help bring awareness to the school community that all decisions have outcomes, and the club would like to help people make better decisions and lead healthier, happier lives. The Half Hollow Hills Science Honor Society is an approved chapter of the Science National Honor Society for high school students. The purpose of the organization is to encourage participation and recognition of scientific Ms. C. Tjersland and intellectual thought. It is to encourage students to Science Honor Society ctjersland@hhh.k12.ny.us participate in community service and, in turn, encourage a dedication to the pursuit of scientific knowledge that benefits all. The Student Government is the primary link between the administration and the students of HSW. Student Students Executive Council Ms. C.
